Dallas, not sure if it was you, but I think it was who you suggested Local Natives...best band of 2010 if you ask me. Great recommendation!

I am a big fan--I don't remember if I was the original person to suggest them. I saw them at a bar in Columbia, Missouri in the last year. The place sold out easily. They're going to explode in popularity soon, esp. with all these late-night appearances on Jimmy Fallon and the like. They're a better Vampire Weekend, and that is a recipe for success.

The rendition of Wide Eyes on Fallon the other night was spectacular.

Saw "Love" at the Mirage in Vegas. I was worried that it would be too "family oriented" or flamboyant, but found it to be quite a dark spectacle. Two thumbs up.

Dallas et al, I assume you've heard the first look NPR preview of the Decemberists' new album.

I did. I like the album so far. It is actually their most consistent cd, with every song being strong. My problem with the album as a whole is its lack of storytelling and "weirdness" that previous releases had. Iike the folk/country experiment, but I hope its just an experiment. Some beautiful melodies (the hymns in particular) but not an album that is going to get limitless replays by me like Crane Wife, Picareque, and Hazards of Love.

The new Cake album, meanwhile, is a great return to form.

^ Ooh, forgot about Cake. Used to crank "No Phone" hard. Gotta check out their new stuff.

Also, with the Decemberists, I'm pumped to see them live again in Feb. I want to see these new songs live, such as:

So I've recently stumbled upon a great band that's been an indie darling for a decade and a half--all the while not even releasing an album since 2001 due to a break up--and they're called The Dismemberment Plan. They're DC natives and supposedly the frontman (who works for the Washington Post in his post-band career) Travis Morison is a huge Wizards fan. They played some reunion shows in DC recently and are reissuing their most successful album, Emergency & I.

Good pull Dune. DP was an amazing act in its hey day (late 90s? maybe), truly innovative. They had a reunion show at the Black Cat about a year back. It was an impossible ticket to get unless you were really well connected (ie, friends with Ian McKaye, Dave Grohl, Bob Mould, or another "Royal.")

That would have been tight. I wish I lived in DC AND had connections ha!

Here is Morrison talking smack on Jarvis Hayes in an interview from 07.

Love the Dismemberment Plan, and have seen them live.

If I can get out of aftermath of this blizzard tomorrow, I'm seeing the Circle Jerks (for the umpteenth time) in Denver.

Hitting Ozzy eighth row center in Detroit. Had to see him one last time before one of us drop. Slash is opening, so it'll be great seeing two amazing rock guitarists in one night. Then, I'm hitting my favorite blues bar in Chicago.

Fleet Foxes just announced they will be in DC in May. Too bad it's on a Sunday -- the one day a week I actually work. I suggest you also see Buddy Guy before he passes. Crazy as it sounds, I'm thinking of taking off work to hit Leon Redbone before he leaves us. One of the coolest cats to ever biped this globe.

+1 for Fleet Foxes and for Trent's Social Network OST.

I'm excited for new Fleet Foxes and Trent's work for Girl with a Dragon Tattoo OST.
