Self-absorbed avatar thread (semi-OT)

Post#1 » by impulsenine » Thu Feb 10, 2011 6:50 am

So I've had my little Spurs avatar just about ever since joining four years ago (!) and after last year's playoff spanking, and the fact that the Spurs are not nearly as boring as they used to be, I thought I should change it.

But is there something to be said for avatar longevity?

How do you guys decide when it's time to change avatars? How often do you do it? Talent for making them doesn't seem to have a correlation to how often it's changed (*cough*kerrsed*cough*).

Just checking what mine is...

EDIT: Oh yeah, that's right. Originally I had GH dunking over Zo in a Pistons jersey. My favourite dunk of all time. Then I wanted to change it to GH dunking in a Suns uni, so I picked the nastiest dunk I could find of his in said uni.

I've had mine for a while now. I think it's time for a change. Maybe something more basketball related, instead of a Korean singer pretending to eat rice and smiling. Haha

I would also like to mention, I'll be changing my account name. Hopefully just shorten it to DRK. High School Nicknames just sounds plain stupid after no one calls you them anymore. So I think it's time for a subtle change.

I've promised to use mine until we don't suck anymore. I might change it soon.

Don't change it.

I personally think "the Spurs are boring" was never really 100% accurate to begin with. Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Tim Duncan aren't boring players. Never have been. Tim Duncan may not be an EXCITING player or explosive, but I enjoy watching a player of his calibur execute passing, defense, rebounding, shot blocking and versitile post scoring. Sure, guys like Amar'e jump high and dunk ferociously...But where did that ever get us?

In 2005, for example, the Spurs beat the Suns in the WCF at their own game so to speak. Here are San Antonio's point totals from the 2005 WCF:

Game 1: 121
Game 2: 111
Game 3: 102
Game 4: 106
Game 5: 101

http://www.nba.com/suns/news/2005_playoff_index.html

I always thought a team like the 2004 Pistons were boring to watch. Sure, that defense was air tight and tough as nails, but IMO that style of play became tedious to witness...

Edit: I'd also like to note here that I'm not bashing your avatar at all...I'm a Suns fan, so naturally I'm down for a little Spurs hating...

+1

I tend to like consistency with the avatars because it becomes a recognizable identifier, regardless of the actual meaning (or lack thereof) of the avatar itself.

Impulsenine: Keep it. Unless you have a really good new idea.

DRK: Either way. I can see what you mean about feeling like it's outdated/irrelevant. But this board without "a Korean singer pretending to eat rice and smiling" would be like...this board without Boxxy. :o
I can't decide whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. :dontknow:

YFZblu:

CK: Change it.
    1) Not unique. That pisses me off every time you both (or more?) are active in a thread.
    2) We don't suck anymore. At least not as bad as everyone seems to think.
    3) Apparently I'm in the minority here, but I never really thought that one was all that clever/funny/whatever.
Los Soles: Wow! Nash taking a shot! On a Suns board!! Brilliant. (I think the whole "Los Suns" part on the jersey + the fact that Nash is going off the wrong foot are AWESOME. Neither of which read when the avatar is that small)

Seriously, YFZblu? The Spurs are an amazing team, no doubt. Great players, great attitudes, superb basketball, brilliant coaching. I'd say in terms of quality team basketball--my obsession--they're probably the third best thing that's happened in the last decade:
    1) The Nash-D'Antoni marriage.
    2) 2004 Pistons
    3) The Spurs
    4) The Celtics
    5) LeBron James
    6) SVG and the Magic
    7) The Thunder
But come on. They're still f*cking boring. They have 4 championships in the last dozen years, and I'd still rather be a Suns fan. 10 times out of 10. Even if I grew up in San Antonio and I worked for the Spurs and every member of my family was a die-hard Spurs fan and Pop was my grandpa and Timmy was my brother-in-law and Ginobili was my clubbing buddy and Tony Parker and I shared a wet nurse and...

 I never said I'd rather be a Spurs fan, but I think the Spurs being boring is a token misconception. Sure, compared to the SUNS, the Spurs are boring. But compared to Phoenix during the Nash/D'antoni time period, every single team in the NBA was boring.

Phoenix radio was the worst in 2005--The Spurs are dropping 110 on our heads, and the talking heads can only talk about how BORING they are...REALLY? THEY BEAT US AT OUR OWN GAME.

I agree actually. It was just a way to show my frustration at the time. And see the funny side.

I'll change it as soon as i find a new one.

I'm torn whether to keep it or ditch it too. People know me by that avatar, but I'm not sure if thats a good thing, considering that (to the brutally honest) the avatar looks a bit lame now.

I might change it to something basketball related, or stick to the Korean theme. I like it being Korean because it represents who I am, a Korean. And I hope to keep the Korean influence on this board going strong.

I'm definatly changing my name though. No question about that.

Any chance you could do both?

Park is my favorite futbol player. Is there a Korean basketball player of that ilk? (Obviously not the same level as Park, but still...)

Sprite may be a fun, zesty, fizzy drink, but it just doesn't seem to compare after drinking Red Bull mixed with caffeine pills and crack.

I think perhaps the answer may be a new Calvin avatar. I do have the Compete Calvin and Hobbes, and it'd give me a good excuse to read it ... again ...

Let this be a lesson to the whippersnappers - if you want to change your avatar, do it before 1,000 posts!

There was one Korean basketball player who made it to the NBA, but he didnt last very long at all. His name is Ha Seung-JIn, a 7'3, 300 pound center who was drafted by the Portland Trail-Blazers in the second round of the 2004 NBA Draft.
Image

He played 46 games in his brief NBA career. He's regarded as one of Korea's best basketball players, but he's not very well known at all on the internatinoal scale, unlike Football players like Park Ji Sung from Manchaester United, and Lee Chung Young from Bolton Wanderers.

Haha. So did I. He was worse then useless though. Earl Boykins would've had a better chance at blocking a shot than him in that game.
