Kahn: "A Trade Is Likely"

Post#1 » by Klomp » Thu Feb 10, 2011 7:43 am

Kahn said it's likely he'll make a trade by the deadline, "but it won't be big." He suggested the move would be "surgical" and "tactical."

I thought we wanted to make a singular move to improve the team?

Exactly, I think we all wanted a player like Iggy that would greatly improve the team, this season and the next. My best guess is that we're getting AR. (Although I don't want to give up Brewer + the pick for him)

I am guessing that one of our SFs will be gone. Luckily we will still have 3 remaining. I am sure Kahn would love to have made a trade for Iggy(or a player on his level) too, but can't get a trade done if the other team is unwilling

Was Iggy really that realistic as a deadline deal? I don't think Philly's going to trade him unless something drastic happens between now and the deadline.

Or if the Wolves are unwilling to add salary.

Well this sucks.

Pups are gonna be screwed for the next few years because of this. He needs to make a big move before the space rolls away...

That would require such a trade to be available. There is no one who really fits the bill that would be available for what the Wolves can offer. Iggy, as mentioned ad infinitum, is way too expensive and would be declining in athleticism just as the rest of the team gets enters their prime. He is not what we're looking for.

My hope is that we can somehow come away from the Melo madness with either Afflalo or Fields, but remember, Kahn likes to make draft day deals, too. Not making a big splash at the deadline is not indicitive of surrendering our major goals.

It actually kinda is, since he loses a bunch of his leverage at the deadline.

And this is why targeting specific players is a good idea, and accumulating assets and hoping for the best (like Kahn did) is not such a good idea.

Iggy, as mentioned ad infinitum, is way too expensive

We're going to lose that cap space anyways, so we might as well use it on a good player rather than just using it on extensions or draft pick salaries that we could give out anyways. The only difference is in Glen Taylor's checkbook, and frankly I don't care at all about that.

and would be declining in athleticism just as the rest of the team gets enters their prime.

Personally, I would kind of like to start winning before our guys get to their primes 7 or 8 years from now, and Iggy would help with that. Much more so, for sure, than nothing would, which is the alternative.

With Al Jefferson we would probably be around the 25 win mark right now. :dontknow:

Is Al Jefferson even worth his contract anymore?? I think getting two first for him alone was probably a good deal in hindsight.

I've been thinking more and more lately that Monta would be the available guy to go after. Better contract than Iggy, top level scorer (including at the end of the game), can create shots but was able to play off the ball in the past. Not a great defender, but you could put guys around him that would help.

I'd trade Beasley (plus extras) for him and put Wes next to him at SF. Rubio-Monta-Wes should be solid (and potentially very good) on both ends. Then you use remaining assets to get an upgrade at center through the draft or free agency (Perkins S&T?).

Won't happen though.

I don't really like Monta at all. I must be in the minority around here.

Also talking about trading Beasley because he's upped his trade value and while he can be a great scorer he's just average or worse everywhere else..especially defensively. Also we'd like to see Wes play more and we have a glut of wings, so if we can get an upgrade out of Beas you have to jump on it.

If it's a super-duper upgrade I guess one would have to consider it. Remember, though, that it's not just about skills. Beasley is a big part of this team's chemistry on and off the court. Trading him will shake up everybody. And not only is Beas super influential on the team, but he's really happy to be here and has a burgeoning friendship with K-Love. Trading him away is risky.

I can see all of these points (EDIT: except our guys' prime is probably only 3-4 years away), and if Kahn decided to go after Iggy (and landed him), I would support it. I think he has all of the upside you talk about, and in particular would be a big help in seeing us win more next year. A Rubio/Iggy/Beas/Love/Darko lineup could possibly make the playoffs next year.

For better or worse, though, I don't think Kahn believes it's a safe way to spend Taylor's money. I'd rather be on the bulletin board kibbitzing than have that resposibility, you know?
