+1
You have to get TOP quality players while Amare is in his prime, f*ck around and it someone swoops in and picks Melo off which is not worth keping Landry Fields and the many other opportunities that will fall in place after NYK has multiple All-Stars in the starting line-up.
When I look at the past recent
Championship teams I see ALL of them, sans SAS, didn't have that many players that were drafted by that team that were really THAT instrumental to the point that success of those rings depended on them. Yeah they contributed but were not the main reason to sway the team's structure. And IMHO no homegrown player on THIS team can even be in the same conversation as DWade, Kobe, Paul Pierce potential (yes, even PP who is very CRAFTY & smart). Believe or not when you have a strong crew with multiple all-stars you can get role players that want to come to your team; good scouting for the right trades will also be needed and this is where Warkentien will earn his money.
I like Landry as a player but if we get Melo and position ourselves to secure another good player then THAT is what going to give NYK a better chance to beat Miami and to come out of the East. And I don't care what anyone says, you have to assemble a team that is going to take down LeBron and the Heat. Melo can go head to head with LBJ....and win/neutralize that match up (he's done it before). LeBron will have to spend the majority of his energy on defense. This system does not stress defense and offense is considered the means to overcome that, right? So if Amar'e in foul trouble there is no proven and consistent weapon to pick up the slack. IF this system had great defensive schemes then we can at least battle until our shots start to fall, but we do not.
IF THERE IS ANY TRUTH THAT DEN wants Landry and Gallo and those two are holding up the deal then barring any major injuries to the Heat (and even CHI when they're at FULL strength) NYK has a very slim chance in coming out of the East in Amare's prime. Yeah, we can wait until 2012 and take a
CHANCE on signing CP3/D12 and let another team make moves to assemble a good core and watch them go there. Take the sure thing now (again, if this deal is legit) and build from there.
