Also the more I think about this and take stock of it, the more I think that Denver is just going to keep Melo unless he will agree to go to the Nyets. They can always revisit a trade right before June 30 (a day before the lockout).
KS don't forget if they are going to "trade him" whether that's now or before the 30th. They will trade him pre-deadline. They are not throwing 24 million away just to eventually trade him pre-June 30th. At this point if they "keep him" he will sign that extension pre-deadline.
As far as his comments, "it's out of my hands"... That has to mean he's being traded...
You know I forgot that the Knicks couldn't trade Denver an expiring in July (nor could the Nets). That means neither the Knicks nor Nyets could make a deal for Melo after February 24. So waiting until after the deadline is therefore super risky for the Nuggets.
A few things I want to get out there:
- A franchise tag that freezes Melo in Denver has 0% chance of happening. 0.
- The Lakers are not in the hunt for Melo and even if they were, Denver wouldn't want to deal him there.
- The new Max that the league wants may be $11M but they won't get that. Maybe they'll get $14M or thereabouts; I still think it will be closer to $16M. BUT HERE IS THE BIG THING: If the new Max comes down to even $14M, then the existing Maxes are going to take a haircut. No chance (0%) that Melo is making $14M next year while LeBron and Rudy Gay are at $18M. That would mean a loss to the new Maxes of about $20M over 5 years and the league will NEVER let that happen. The only amount I could see them accepting over 5 years is the range of $3M-$6M less for new Maxes compared to the existing Maxes.
- Trading Mozgov for Melo? Hmmm. I'm keeping Fields out no matter what. I would hate to give up Mozgov but if Nene comes back, maybe you can live with that.
