TT Extended, MM Next

Post#1 » by MickeyDavis » Sat Feb 12, 2011 12:01 am

Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy said in an interview Friday that he reached an agreement to extend the contract of general manager Ted Thompson.

The deal was actually completed in December, Murphy said, but neither side wanted to announce it before the season was over.

The Packers are expected to announce the signing soon.

Thompson had two years left on his contract after the 2010 season and this will be his second extension since becoming general manager in 2005. It's not known how long the extension is for, but it's likely it's for three year more years so that Thompson is locked in for five years.

"I have complete confidence in Ted," Murphy said in an interview Friday. "The other thing I would say that has ben really impressive is the working relationship he and Mike (McCarthy have. They really work well together."

Murphy said that in recent weeks work has been done on coach Mike McCarthy's contract and he expects a deal will be completed with him very soon. Murphy said he would like to have both contracts mirror each other and was confident that would happen.

"I'm confident that they will both be here long-term," Murphy said. "I'm confident we'll work something out with Mike."

Since joining the Packers, Thompson's teams have made the playoffs three times and gone to the NFC Championship twice. After his first NFC Championship team in '07, Thompson was named the Sporting News executive of the year.

"There's no question he's one of the top GMs in the league," Murphy said. "It's my thought that it was really good for the organization to lock him up. He's a talented general manager. I really enjoy working with Ted."

I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

What's the contract status of Capers? Love locking up MM and TT, but I'd do whatever it takes to make sure Capers is taken care of and happy.

I doubt Capers wants to be locked up yet. I can see him taking one last hard look at a head coaching opportunity after next season and if there's not a fit, signing long term with the Pack.

Did you make it to Green Bay to watch the game? I decided to make the trip myself(albeit from a much shorter distance of a 2 hour drive). Curious how your trip turned out if you made it.

Give MM his damn extension and lock him up,all the guy does is win Super Bowls for God's sake don't let him get away.

:)

There's always going to be a part of me that feels like a real jerk for doubting MM,a lot of us got seriously owned by the greatest coach in the league.

Feels good though.

:)

At least I was always behind TT 110%,never had issue with him.

I was never close to being as down on Ted as some of you were with McCarthy, but i do admit that i wasn't a full in believer in Thompson until i saw how the Raji/Matthews draft panned out last season to go with how fabulous Finley looked as the season went on last year. Mix in the most important aspect of how Rodgers played even lost we lost that playoff game in Arizona, i saw Ted doing what i wasn't seeing enough of earlier on.

I'm a big fan of long time Packers beat writer Cliff Christl and share a lot of his views on professional football. His main belief that i share is that to win big in the NFL, you need a certain amount of real prime time playmakers or as Ron Wolf called them, field tilters. Of course a good team also needs to have a bunch of at least solid players so that their aren't many or any major liabilities on the field, but you can't win big with a team full of mostly just solid players with also very few of those field tilters.

Well, through the first 3-4 years of Thompson's tenure, i saw that he really improved the overall quality/depth of the roster 1-53. That said, besides Woodson, Jennings, and Collins, i saw Ted hitting lots of singles and doubles, but i wondered if he'd be able to land enough of those playmakers to get the Packers to where they could be great, not just good.

The last two years have pulverized that concern about Thompson. Drafting Rodgers for Ted was like Wolf's franchise changing moment when he traded for Brett. Landing a QB like Aaron or Brett is like winning the lottery for an NFL franchise. Insanely important. Mix the development of other guys the last two years

Rodgers
Jennings
Finley
Sitton
Matthews
Raji
Woodson
Tramon

That's already plenty enough proven playmakers compared to many other teams in the league, all are young/youngish except Woodson, and i can see the potential of Shields to easily join that list soon along with my loving the upside of Neal to maybe become something like Cullen Jenkins. On top of all that, Ted has 8 picks in the coming draft.

That's the crazy thing. 53-man roster + 15 IR + Jolly + 8 potential draft picks = deepest training camp ever?

Yea we should have a very deep roster, but of those 15 guys on the IR, more than half of them likely won't even be in camp next year.

Of those 15 on the IR, the only ones i see as being important for next season and going forward are Finley, Grant, and Neal.

Hopefully we can trade Barnett too.
