Why are the Hawks not going after Melo?

Post#1 » by twix2500 » Sun Feb 13, 2011 3:24 am

Why are the hawks not going after Melo? The Hawks have trade assets and a nucleus that could develope into a contender around Melo. I would be willing to trade Josh Smith, Marvin Williams and Mike Bibby for Melo, Nene and Anthony Carter.

Horford, Melo and Johnson would make a hellava trio and with Nene, would have a excellent inside outside game. Over the summer depth can be added.

1) It is unlikely that Denver would trade both Melo and Nene for that package.

2) Even if they did, Melo's unlikely to resign so unless you lock up Nene (who can also opt out) then you've traded Josh Smith for a brief rental.

3) Even if you could sweeten the deal with draft picks and taking on a really bad contract like Harrington to make Denver bite then you've paid even more for him to walk in the summer. Which if he does then you are finished as a GM.

I just dont understand why wouldnt Hawks make a pitch to Melo, and not be in a good position to resign him. The Hawks can give a better package to Denver and Melo would have a better nucleus around him than NY. And play on a team that would make a lot of damage in the playoffs this year. So why wouldnt he be in favor to resign and stay in ATL? Whats so unattractive about the Hawks situation?

Correct me if im wrong but didnt the Hawks make a pitch or inquire about Melo?
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

And then if he leaves for New York, we have no Melo and no Horford. No thanks.

Because he wants to play in NY? It isn't about him winning championships or any of that, he wants to play in NY and wants to play on that big stage.

And like dirtybird said, I remember reading somewhere that Sund did inquire about Melo. But the risk is still crazy. You run the risk of him bolting as he has said he will probably do (I know he has said he will consider an extension with Denver, but come on).

When did he inquire? Did he even put much effort?? Come on its up to management to persuade and recruit these players like Riley does all the time for the Heat. It was rumored Hardaway, Zo, Odom, James, Shaq were all going to NY or somewhere else and that didnt stop the Heat management from going after them. Like the Heat they had young nuclues with trade value and costars that will complement a superstar. Get him here, have a big playoff run, maybe a epic battle against the Heat or Celtics and its going to be hard for him to leave. The Hawks always seem to settle for just being good and not making that next step to being great, like the Motumbo and Nique years. Have fans lost faith in this organization and dont expect them to get it done?? It always seems like an half arse effort to being great. And believe me Melo does care about playing for a championship.
