Guys...it's waaaayyyy too quiet. I guess Donnie is obliging to that privacy "rule" the Nuggets tried to put in place with the Nets. I just feel something is going to happen/be released soon, good or bad news.

I just looked at the standings and the nuggets are in 8th place in the west and there in danger of falling out of playoffs so something has to get done quickly there is only 9 days left before the deadline.

"My big selling point is everything Melo wants, I think we can get done in Denver," Karl said. "We haven't had the cap flexibility, and we'll have that next year. We haven't had a situation where I think we've had maneuverability with our team.

"We have some young players we think are going to be really good and kind of redefining the team. Sometimes I wish he would have chosen to be with us in that challenge and see what happens.

Against this complicated backdrop, sources say the Nuggets and Knicks have continued to discuss trade proposals -- as they were even before Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov pulled his team out of the talks Jan. 19. Those talks between Denver and New York are expected to become "more extensive" during the upcoming All-Star weekend in Los Angeles, when executives will have a chance to meet face to face, according to a person familiar with the dialogue between the teams.

Karl using past tense, meetings during AS weekend all really seem to be a point of no return. How can you bring Melo back after all of this?

Nice find Lakerfan17. Pretty telling quote, first one coming from Denver where they concede Melo won't be part of their future.

Just more posturing. Deal is already done in my eyes. They've already decided to trade him to NY. Now it comes down to how much can they scare us into giving them. All-star weekend has been the date for weeks. No way they traded him after he was announced as a starter because he wouldn't be able to play. Denver wants a representative of their team. They wanted to keep Melo as long as possible because they want to want the best chance of staying in playoff hunt.

Carmelo Anthony could have been a Knick Monday if only team president Donnie Walsh were willing to meet Denver's trade demands, which one team official classified as "steep."

According to a team source close to the negotiations, "there is a deal to be made" but whether Anthony joins forces with Amar'e Stoudemire in New York between Tuesday and the Feb. 24 trade deadline likely comes down to the Nuggets either lowering their asking price or the Knicks turning over their roster to acquire one of the NBA's top players.

^ Felton, Gallo, another starter (Fields? Mozgov? Chandler?) Curry, and a pick (AR deal?) for Melo and Billups?

IDK what to think anymore .

Oft-cited warning from various teams tonight: Don't be shocked if Nuggets, after season of shopping him, keep Melo past Feb. 24 trade buzzer

Melo staying in Denver would be fitting conclusion to this season-long circus but has become increasingly plausible for couple key reasons

Rising belief around NBA that some sort of franchise tag on way, along w/Melo's open lust for extension by June 30, changing tune out there

DEN will keep talking trades until buzzer sounds Feb. 24 but case for keeping Melo (compared to settling for so-so trade) gaining credence

He will be staying in DEN I get the feeling, might as well keep him, sell some tickets, win some games / potentially make playoffs and hope that his mind changes over that time.

If they keep him, does Donnie keep his job?
I subscribe to the thinking that Melo can be Kobe to Amare's Shaq.....so I think it is prudent to go all out to acquire his services. But if it doesn't happen (because Denver foolishly chooses to keep Melo) I am confident that Donnie has a more than adequate alternative or alternatives to improve this roster. Just the malaise lifted from the team after the deadline should improve us but there are deals to be made and I believe Donnie is ready to pull the trigger if Melo to NY never happens. It does hurt to say that though.....

Denver is just using what little leverage they have, which is the threat of a franchise tag and Melo himself saying he basically wants the extension. If it works they will either get us to pony up more than we wanted, or we'll call their bluff and hope to sign him in FA.

From the very beginning when Denver first started talking down NY's assets and flirtimg with everyone but the team he wanted to go to i thought the end game was to force him to re-sign with the Nugs.

The Nuggets, according to a source, are asking for three starters - including Danilo Gallinari and Raymond Felton - plus Eddy Curry's expiring contract and at least one first-round pick. In that proposed deal, Anthony and veteran point guard Chauncey Billups would be coming to the Knicks.

Three starters ? So I guess the third starter is either Landry Fields or Wilson Chandler. Probably Landry Fields because Chandler would need to be resigned next summer.
So the Nuggets want Felton, Gallinari, Fields, Curry's expiring contract and at least one first round pick ?

It's surprising because they didn't mention cap and tax relief (with Timberwolves) and there's no mention of Anthony Randolph.

If it's true and they don't even care about including the Timberwolves in the discussions (for tax relief) then as I said yesterday the Nuggets simply don't want to trade Melo unless they get a swetheart deal. There's simply no way Walsh would make the proposed trade.

For fun, I just crunched the numbers and it's scary because the trade works under cap rules with Chandler !

Carmelo Anthony : $17,149,243
Chauncey Billups : $13,150,000
TOTAL : $30,299,243

FOR

Eddy Curry : $11,854,458 (salary with prorated trade bonus)
Raymond Felton : $7,000,000
Danilo Gallinari : $3,304,560
Wilson Chandler : $2,130,483
TOTAL : $24,289,501

The Nuggets would save $6 million (in tax payments) in that trade. They would remain over the tax but they could do some manoeuvering to fall under the tax (they would need to clear $6 million more) before the trade deadline.

This trade also works :
Carmelo Anthony : $17,149,243
Chauncey Billups : $13,150,000
TOTAL : $30,299,243

FOR

Eddy Curry : $11,854,458
Raymond Felton : $7,000,000
Danilo Gallinari : $3,304,560
Landry Fields : $473,604
Anthony Randolph : $1,965,720
TOTAL : $24,598,342

For what it's worth, those trades are awful for the Knicks and I wouldn't suggest Walsh to pull the trigger on either trade, I'm just saying they are legal and they make sense from the Nuggets perspective (they save money, get cap/tax relief, rebuild and get younger, draft picks and a big expiring contract). So I guess it's a plausible rumor.

Franchise tag would not work as long as Melo opts out.

Yeah, I would think Melo stays with Denver unless Donnie gives up some talent, Everyone can keep mentioning the savings that Denver would receive but I just don't see them handing over Melo without another starter along with Chandler and a pick. Donnie knows this and is gonna wait to the last minute to increase his offer and leave it in Denvers hands, Most likely deal imo Gallo, Chandler plus fillers for Melo while still holding onto AR and possibly moving him in a completely other deal.
