When I was in grade school, I thought that there was originally only one Carolina, but during the civil war they split. I think I even mentioned it in a paper once, and that's how I was disabused of that notion...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Province_of_Carolina

the province of carolina split in 1712 to form north and south carolina and they became royal colonies in 1729.

on a random related note, i am actually reading a book right now called "how the states got their shapes" its half history, half geography. pretty neat to read all the reasons for each boundary for each state.

here's a cool map

When in South Carolina, refer to said state as Carolina.

Columbia is the belly button of South Carolina.

It's in the middle of South Carolina.

There are two Carolinas.

also in the book i am reading. franklin lasted for 4 years. when you drive around in that part in tennessee you can still see the signs here and there, random stuff named franklin etc...

there was also a state of jefferson in what is now colorado, i think.

i read yesterday about how georgia and nc fought for many years (sometimes actual fighting) over the strip of land that is now the border between georgia and nc. apparently georgia claimed the line was 12 miles to the north due to a previous erroneous survey.

If a person outside of either state hears "Carolina," they are going to think of UNC, not SC. Hell, I even have to say "South Carolina" because "USC" means "Southern Cal" to anyone outside of SC. But it's sort of a dumb thing to argue about, because it's not like people in SC are going to stop calling it what they always do.

Regardless, huge pickup for the head ball coach. I'll be rooting for them, as always.

this is the book
http://www.amazon.com/How-States-Got-Th ... 0061431389

its not quite as interesting as the history channel special. it's broken down by state in alphabetical order rather than the show which did it based on region.

i haven't gotten to the NC section yet. I have always wondered why the NC/SC border isnt a straight east/west line west of charlotte. will find out soon.

basketballtalk Report: Orlando interested in Zach Randolph; but there are issues http://dlvr.it/Ggflw #PBT #NBA

A poster on the Kings board with "sources" says that the Kings could get involved in this deal sending possibly Landry to Memphis. Interesting.

tomhaberstroh Synergy's top 5 worst defenders (min. 300 plays): J.R. Smith, Ramon Sessions, Daniel Gibson, Marco Belinelli, Nic Batum.

Looky there. Nic Batum. Didn't you just call out Rose the other day? I thought so!

I thought he was too. Or rather at least a decent defender...

Batum has always been a good defender. I wonder what led him to that conclusion
