Melo didn't give the Knicks 7 months to do something... he gave the Nuggets 7 months to do something and the Nugs gave the Knicks 2 weeks.

where would rip in search of a new contract get more playing time, here or boston ? and yes jeffries will probably be back because god hates me. well it's mutual bitch.

Apparently here he'd play 48 minutes if that trade goes through!

True and he helps the KNicks reach that championship level (at least in his eyes). If he really has game he can have some nice shoot outs against fellow Uconn great Ray allen. That would be pretty cool to see I must say (as a Uconn and Knicks fan).

If Rip takes a buyout, it would buy him out of this year and next year. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the new team's salary get deducted from his previous salary? That might be if it's a straight out waiver, but I'm not sure. So he really wouldn't be able to make more money than he is right now. He could sign for the rest of year in Boston(as the wiretap suggests) and then next year hook onto a playoff team to make an impact. -Jitpal

Edit: Found this on Coon's CBA FAQs, so I guess it depends on how the negotiate the buyout. I'm betting it's part of it.
If another team signs a released player who had a guaranteed contract (as long as the player has cleared waivers -- see question number 56), the player's original team is allowed to reduce the amount of money it still owes the player (and lower their team salary) by a commensurate amount (this is called the right of set-off). This is true if the player signs with any professional team -- it doesn't even have to be an NBA team. The amount the original team gets to set off is limited to one-half the difference between the player's new salary and the minimum salary for a one-year veteran (if the player is a rookie, then the rookie minimum is used instead).

For example, suppose a fifth-year player is waived during the 2005 offseason, with one guaranteed season remaining on his contract. If this player signs a $1 million contract with another NBA team for the 2005-06 season, his original team gets to set off $1 million minus $641,748 (the minimum for a one-year veteran in 2005-06), divided by two, or $179,126. If this player had a $5 million salary with his prior team, then his prior team would be responsible for the remaining $4,820,874. Note that between his prior team and new team the player will earn a combined $5,820,874, which was more than he made prior to being waived.

Teams and players may negotiate a waiver of the team's set-off rights. Typically (but not necessarily) this is done when a contract is altered as part of a buyout (see question number 62), but not at other times.

It's funny how quiet it is when the Knicks are in trade talks with Denver compared to the Nets debacle. Our org is doing a great job keeping most of the talks under the table. This is why I think when the deadline approaches, we are going to be blown away with a surprise 3rd, 4th or even 5th team entering the fray. This matter is so unpredictable.

I also think that some at ESPN and Wojina specifically do not have much of an appetite to report on a trade that would send Melo to the Knicks.

Stack was cut earlier this year because he is done. DIdn't Hughes have some choice words for D'Antoni after he left? He won't be coming either. -Jitpal

he was actually cut because the heat needed another big man(erick dampier)

It's also possible that certain parties, Melo's agents, wanted the Nets talks extremely public and to destroy them to force NJ out of this.

I think this is a very intelligent assessment. All these reports from different unnamed sources are about as speculative as what we discuss here on this board. People making stuff up based on what they want or would do.

Believe whatever you want! Here is what I believe:

1) Knicks DID offer the cap relief(20mil+ savings) plus Chandler, pick as a framework for the deal.
2) Denver FO is COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT AND UNPROFESSIONAL. They jerked Nyets around and are doing the same thing now... They really don't know what to do! Oh they know what they want... but they have no idea how to make a deal.
3)Dolan will not sell out the entire Knick roster... IMO he and Walsh have agreed on "a line in the sand" in terms of what they will give up for Melo.... or else they will wait.

It has always been the Knicks position... from day 1... that we prefer if this goes to FA... we do believe that Melo will sign with us in FA.

If Melo signs the extension with Denver or Nyets... he will be miserable.

Melo will ultimately decide, $$$ or Knicks. Until he convinces Denver FO he will not sign with them...
they will play this game.
The GAME is NIGERIAN ROULETTE: it is different than Russian roulette
because in this game Ujiri puts a gun to his own head, then says or does something that is unprofessional and then pulls the trigger to see if he is still alive.

So don't blame Donnie... don't blame Dolan (yes he is a jerk... but not on this one)
and put the blame squarly where it belongs.....

Incompetent and farcical Denver management and a wavering Melo.

Do we have a separate thread for "Guess Melo's FA Buddy" or will it just be in here? :D

well its certainly more structured cause actual organizations are involved, its not just a bunch of exorbitantly rich 20 somethings seeing how much BS they can feed to the media to create a bigger story.
