Nets owner has not changed his mind on Anthony
Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has not changed his mind about the franchise's pursuit of Carmelo Anthony.

The Russian told team executives last month to end drawn-out trade talks for the Denver Nuggets All-Star forward and nothing has changed with the NBA trading deadline a week away, his spokeswoman said Thursday.

There were reports on Wednesday that the Nets and Nuggets had renewed talks about a deal for Anthony. However, Prokhorov spokeswoman Ellen Pinchuk said in an e-mail that the billionaire maintains his stance, despite the reports.

"Mikhail has not changed his mind," Pinchuk wrote.

When asked if that meant Prokhorov does not want the Nets to reopen talks with Denver at this point, the spokeswoman said:

"What I said is what I said," she insisted. "Not what you said."

Prokhorov stunned NBA followers last month during a visit to New Jersey when he told the team to end trade talks for Anthony just a day before he was to have a sitdown with the player. At the time Prokhorov said the much ballyhooed, 15-player, three-team deal that also involved the Detroit Pistons had become too become too expensive. The negotiations had also become too public and the constant rumors were hurting his team.

Prokhorov also said at the time there was no chance the talks would be resurrected.

A league official with knowledge of the Nets told The Associated Press on Thursday that Denver recently contacted New Jersey to see if there would be any interest in acquiring Anthony, who can become a free agent at the end of the season. The official asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak for the Nets.

The Nets and Knicks have been mentioned as the most likely future home for Anthony, should he be traded. And Anthony has been quoted several times that he would love to play for the Knicks.

But the Nets might have more to offer the Nuggets. Rookie power forward Derrick Favors, the No. 3 pick in the draft, has tremendous upside as a 19-year-old. His first season has not been overly impressive because of foul problems and a general learning curve. New Jersey also has five first-round draft picks over the next two years to offer.

Prokhorov and Nets general manager Billy King are expected to be in Los Angeles for the All-Star game this weekend, and Prokhorov might get a chance to say hello this time to Anthony. Of course, any trade to New Jersey would be contingent on Anthony signing a $65 million contract extension that's been on the table since June.

Anthony also would have to know that coming to New Jersey probably would end his playoff hopes. The Nets have a 17-40 mark entering the break and are 8½ games out of a playoff berth with 25 left.

The Nuggets (32-25), meanwhile, have the seventh best record in the West.

I hope that Proky is serious because if all this is true, someone needs to be fired on the spot for raising the ante now that we're closer to the deadline. It makes no sense at all. Nothing has changed. Things are just as public as before and the process is now even longer. If true, this is absolutely ridiculous.

Someone suggested on another forum that this could just be a ploy to get the Knicks to offer up more. I seriously doubt it, but given the Nuggets FO stupidity during this whole process I wouldn't be surprised if it were. If it were true that this is a Nuggets bluff, they'd be over playing it. This "proposed" trade is shyt to the fullest.

Awesome!

I just think it's silly for NJ to sell the farm for this guy, he obviously wants to play in NY.

Personally, this is Defcon 5 for my old azz Lakes, we'll rent him for half a season for Bynum straight up and let him walk to NYK, and prey we find a way to win one last 'chip so it's all for not, but as bad as we're playing it's worth a shot, and Bynum isn't a franchise player.

After the Nuggets reached out and contacted the Nets more than a week ago to re-open talks, both sides collaborated on a deal that has settled into the following form: The Nets would send rookie Derrick Favors, point guard Devin Harris, forward Troy Murphy with his expiring $11.9 million contract and rookie guard Ben Uzoh plus four first-round draft picks to the Nuggets for Anthony, point guard Chauncey Billups, forwards Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams, and center Melvin Ely.
The Nets would surrender their own first-round pick for June's NBA Draft along with a pair of 2012 picks, a protected-to-18 pick received from the Lakers and a protected-to-7 pick from the Warriors, and a 2011 lottery-protected Rockets pick.

OMG...so we tell the Nuggets to STFU, this costs too much for us to get involved in a month ago, the Nuggets call US to re-engage us, and somehow we end up giving more than what we rejected back then?!?!

Favors (top 3)
Nets (top 10)
Rockets (lotto protected)
2012 Lakers
2012 Warriors

?!?!?

I am soooo ready to jump off this ship.

^^^^^Yeah this is my sentiment too

Last month we were giving up 3 first round picks and taking on more salary (see: Al)....but now so we don't have to take on Al's contract so we're giving a 4th 1st rounder? Jesus

If they got it wrong in the details and it was really our 2011 1st, GSW 2012, and 2 2nds, I'd be more comfortable with it, but this is just overkill asking for 4. The management is different, but are they still bitter about trading 3 firsts for Kmart?

Please this is getting (Please Use More Appropriate Word). If that deal goes through while I will still be a Nets fan, I'm moving from the Billy King supporter side to the get this clown shoes bastard out of town.

First and foremost, they either get Favors or our Lotto pick this year period. They would probably want Favors because with Melo we likly will be picking between 10-14 now in a week draft.

My deal that is FAIR: Harris, Favors, Murphy, Graham, 2011 Lakers Pick, 2012 GSW Pick, 2011 #2, 2013 #2 for Melo, Billups, Ely, Sheldon, Balkman.

That is fair as balls to me. It essentially comes down to Melo for 3 1sts favors and an expiring then Billups/fillers for Harris/fillers. To be honest, for the latter half of the deal WE SHOULD BE GETTING A FREAKING 1ST FROM DENVER.

Yes, I'm willing to deal with Ely and Williams for 2 months. Balkman, though he's worthless to me has a very small contract even if it's for 2 more seasons after this (no annual raise either)

As various writers reported Thursday, the Nets would send Devin Harris, Troy Murphy, Derrick Favors, Ben Uzoh, their own pick in 2011 and three protected picks acquired in trades to Denver for Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Renald Balkman and Melvin Ely. Denver would then package Murphy and at least one of those picks in a separate deal with the Cavaliers. It's uncertain who the Cavs would send west.

So I'll make it clearer. This is the deal:

Devin Harris
Troy Murphy
Derrick Favors
Ben Uzoh
Nets 2011 #1
Lakers 2011 #1
GSW 2012 #1
Houstons 2012 #1

For

Carmelo Anthony
Chauncey Billups
Sheldon Williams
Melvin Ely
Renaldo Balkman

I still don't think Melo is worth Favors, 2 lotto picks (GSW will likely be one) and 2 additional late firsts (never know either with Houstons).

To be optimistic, at least we still have our own picks after this draft. I still feel, if we're including Favors, we only need to be sending 2 #1's and 2 #2's.

I hope Billy does some tweaking...again, like I've complained about multiple times WE'RE NEGOTIATING AGAINST OURSELVES!!! We can cut this deal down and still make it better for Denver than what New York is offering. I pray Billy can live with the fact he's been played for a fool yet again if this goes down.

We all need to calm down. I already posted the article with Proky saying nothing has changed. Until I see Melo in a Net uniform, nothing has changed. The media has wanted to trade for Melo much more so than the Nets. Even after PRoky came out and said we're done, there were news reports that we were just bluffing. These people want to believe that we're back in the game so that they can write more stories. It has to be fake because it is inconceivable why we'd wait longer when our season is even farther down the drain and give up even more to make the trade. It's stupid. I'll believe it when I see it.

Who knows? But there's a lot more reports of it being true than not. They've all came out as more recent than the article saying Prok hasn't changed his mind.

All u guys need to do is get David West in the offseason and u're basically guaranteed that Paul wants to join.

RT @al_iannazzone: Sources: there is a tentative agreement between the Nets and Nuggets for Carmelo Anthony. Still need him to agree to ext.

If we don't get someone like West in the offseason or do something draft night like flipper Chauncey on draft night, Carmelo is gonna be a baby next year.

While I also agree with the idea that if Favors busts, this is a great deal for us, I still and 10000% against the idea of sending 4 first round picks to Denver where 2 and possibly a 3rd will be a lottery picks. It's just too much when we're betting against ourselves when it's clear the Knicks are not raising their bet that high.

I'm just saying, while it could down the road be a win for the Nets, it's still a loss when Melo could have been had for less. Take out our 2011 #1 and I'm fine with the deal. Knicks still can't touch that deal. There is just no reason whatsoever to include it and is a clear mismanagement of assets.

I did have another idea which would make me more OK with this deal. Put a pretty good restriction on our 2011 #1 which would make Denver likely get it between 2012-2014.
