After nearly six months of pursuing Carmelo Anthony, countless phone calls, text messages, trade proposals, counteroffers and acrimonious times the Nets close to landing the four-time All-Star small forward – finally.

The Nets and Nuggets have reached a tentative agreement on a deal involving Carmelo Anthony, multiple NBA sources told The Record. The deal is pending Anthony agreeing to sign a three-year, $65 million contract extension.

If Anthony says yes, the Nets will get the four-time All-Star, Chauncey Billups, Sheldon Williams, Melvin Ely and Renaldo Balkman from the Nuggets. In turn, the Nets would send Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh and four first-round picks to Denver.

The Nets won’t do the trade unless Anthony agrees to the extension. They’re expected to meet with him during this All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles and convince him to join.

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov, general manager Billy King, CEO Brett Yormark and part-owner Jay-Z are in Los Angeles and likely will meet with Anthony to try and sell him on the future of the franchise and the move to Brooklyn.

If Anthony rejects the Nets, the Knicks are expected to be the frontrunners to land him.

(1) Meets with the Nyets, says he'll consider it.

(2) Meets with Dolan, says he'll sign extension with Nyets unless the Knicks step up and do what Denver is demanding.

(3) Knicks go on ahead and do that since they can't afford not to.

I still don't see Carmelo wanting to go to the Nets. At the end of the day I think he ends up with the Knicks one way or the other.

I don't think Dolan is that dumb though. His meeting with the Knicks is probably just to spur Prokhorov to give Anthony a better chance at winning or something to that effect.

Billups, Melo, and Brook Lopez would be a pretty good big 3 to put out there in the East. Besides this year, those picks are not going to be lottery.

What a price to pay for Carmelo Anthony. That's...that's a pretty penny.

Interesting. That would be a pretty major shakeup.

Now all the Nuggets need to do is get rid of Birdman and Kenyon Martin and I might be able to stomach watching some of the local broadcasts on occasion.

Also – That is faaaaaaaaaar more than I’d pay for Carmelo Anthony.

Time for another list:

(1) Yes he is, and then some.

(2) The Knicks simply can't go back to their fanbase and say "We couldn't give up Fields and Gallo" while Melo suits up in Brooklyn.

(3) Amare is not a sufficient draw for other elite talent to want to come to the Knicks.

Personally, I don't feel like this deal puts the Nets in any kind of realistic contention over the next few years. #1 they won't have any draft picks to pick up young talent to put around Melo anymore, #2 They still won't be good enough to contend with the upper echelon of teams in the East which therefore eliminates them from even reaching the 2nd round of the playoffs.

This is the most perfect trade that could happen for other East teams. Nets would still be a nobody.

Melo will agree to trade. He wants his money

I don't think Dolan is that dumb though.

You’re aware that this is the same guy that hired Zeke in the first place, employed him as long as he did and then tried to bring him back from FIU right?

Compile a Bulls package that is legitimately better than that package...Then watch your head explode at the laundry list of assets you've written down.

And sure enough, GARPAX will get yelled at by some fans.

Personally, I don't feel like this deal puts the Nets in any kind of realistic contention over the next few years.

I feel like it makes them a steady contender for the 6 seed until Billups falls off.

Can

Billups
Morrow
Anthony
Humphries
Lopez

Make up 8.5 games on the Pacers? I doubt it.

I think that's a solid team going forward (like next year) and it has cap space (amazingly) in 2012 when Williams/Paul/Howard are FA and the team is moving into Brooklyn.

But I think this means NY might go for broke with this.

That team would have the cap space to sign Paul or Deron Williams in 2012. Hopefully Melo agrees to sign the extension so this can end already.
