Yes, but the guy wants his extension too. For that to happen, he needs another competitor to push the Knicks, otherwise, he doesn't think Walsh will seriously negotiate because he thinks he can get him as a FA.

There has always been a conflict of interest here because Melo doesn't want to wait will FA. I think he has made that clear the past week or so.

False. All he has to do is say he is going to FA.

He should be forcing Denver's hand, not ours.

But he still has plenty of time to say this. I thin it's about 50/50 he does say this before it's all said and done. It's the last and most powerful card in his hand.

For the third time with the Gallo thing, WHAT IS THE REST OF THE OFFER?

Until you can tell me that, you can't just say we should trade Gallo to make the deal happen.

But he wouldn't do that because we now know that he values money ($65 million dollar ext) over playing for a winning team/contender. If he did what you're saying there's a chance that Denver would call his bluff and hold on to him and he wouldn't get his $65 mil..... so he's forcing our hand instead.

Last Melo tweet: on his way out, random credentialed person: "Welcome to New Jersey!" Can't make it up.

And like others have already said, we have no idea how much else they want other than Gallo than we are willing to give. Maybe we have offered Chandler, Fields and Felton for Billups and Melo and they want Gallo too and we wont trade him, would you do that deal? Or maybe they just want Gallo, Eddy and a pick, in which case you would be right. We simply dont know so there is no point in acting like we should be mad at Donnie.

Why would no deal change expectations? The shelf life of a Melo/Amare/Billups core is this year and next. You have to make noise. A core of Felton/Amare/Gallo/Fields has a shelf life of at least 5 years and you still have flexibility to get better from outside and inside. One gives you a shot for literally 1 1/2 seasons. The other way gives you the ability to setup a long term championship contender. -Jitpal

there is plenty of flexibility to get better after melo trade, its been explained numerous times

bottom line:

if team is not trading the players to get melo, then those said players better take team farther than what a melo team could do...b/c if they cant, then they shouldnt be holding a deal up

No there isn't. No flexibility. You get a late pick this year. That's it. When you have money in 2012, you have to rebuild the entire roster. Why would guys flock to play with 2 superstars when you can play with 3 (Miami)? I have complete faith in Walsh. He's going to build the Knicks a championship contender. A long term, flexible championship contender. Trading everyone for Melo isn't that. -Jitpal

I guarantee that a lineup of Billups, Fields, Melo, Amare, MLE Center > Than any lineup built around our current team. What is wrong with you guys?

Does Gallo want to be the 6th man here for most of his career? Because he sure isn't starting if Melo comes. We're going to have Amar'e at PF and we all know Walsh is going to insist on a real C. Neither Melo or Gallo can play SG for an entire season.

Perhaps, but he shouldn't be testing us like this to begin with. Not if he intends to come to the best team possible to compete for a ring.

Oh please. Gallo is one of the most beloved Knicks. Only fake, bandwagon fans will hate Gallo.

Plus in a few years when Gallo's putting up 20 a game, we'll be thanking Donnie for not trading him ALONG with other prospects for Melo, who'll be rotting in BK (If the trade goes down of course).

Sometimes I just don't understand you guys. Instead of envisioning how good we could be, how good we need to be if we could hold on the Gallo, you guys are treating him like he is irrelevant.

Common sense IMO says he is not only is Gallo relevant, but he may be the deference between us being an "Altanta hawks" or being something more, way more.

He may be the difference (if we can use him as trade bait for Paul,Deron, D.Howard) between being a "good team" and being a contender. I just don't get some of you guys here.... WHY THE F SHOULD WE EVER BID AGAINST OURSELVES?

Isn't that what we pay Walsh for? Or do we pay Walsh to just give away talent because the other team makes crazy demands from a position of weakness.

The board wreaks of only half thought out plans. People too concerned with instant gratification then exacting a well thought out plan.

And it also wreaks with nonchalant posters who act as if they have first freaking hand knowledge of everything that is going on.

They probably will end up releasing him but they dont want to make any moves until this carmelo situation gets handled.

He's had "great conversations" with Masai/Josh.
He has yet to hear a "legit offer" but the Nets have had 2 deals before today agreed on?
This means the Net offer was not legit to him because NJ was not what he wanted...and they knew that.
"Something done" means get him to the Knicks.
Unfortunately, "legit" also means Denver's FO is telling him they can not consider the Knick offer a "legit" one.
Something has to give.

mugzi wrote:At the most I offer Felton/Chandler/1st or AR /Curry 4 Melo and Billups. Thats it, final offer. They get 3 assets and shed Billups contract. That's more than fair. No Gallo, No Fields. You guys that are so willing to give up Gallo, Chandler and maybe even Fields need to relax. In Donnie we trust.

Honestly - I feel like Fields is over-rated by this board. I would rather include him then Gallo for sure. Gallo is only getting better and I feel like trading him now is selling low. Definitely no Mozgov and no Gallo in my trade offer.

First thing Jerry West said was Walsh is a very respected and smart GM. Then he went on to say that the Knicks are in the position of power in this negotiation and that they should give up minimal assets for Melo.

That's interesting... But to be fair to Jerry (and I love him) he's not close enough to the situation to judge how much power the Knicks actually have. I'm sure he would admit that much.

I believe logic dictates how much power we have. The only other variable is Melo. He's the Xfactor. But I'm guessing that West is assumes Melo wants the Knicks. That said, I respect his opinion(of what a smart gm should do) over any hack writer or emotional fan...
