Of course, it's not like we can't improve our own team over the next 1.5 years.

As a second round pick - Landry Fields would be entitled to earn up to the full MLE in his third season (2010) - so 5.7 million currently.

That would put the Knicks at 19.98 (Amare) + 20.44 (Melo) + 5.7 (Landry) + 3.9 (8 * 490k) = 50 million

That would leave NY with 8 million dollars of cap space under the current CBA. Not gonna sign CP3 or Deron for 8 million starting.

Good to know.

Hopefully the league doesn't set a single soft or hard cap with no salary cap as I doubt the actual salary cap would increase.

So now my question should be what happens if we got Dwight in free agency by moving one of Boozer or Deng (all it will take) if the league doesn't change the rules?

Rose/SG we acquired?)/Deng/Noah/Howard

My head hurts.

Fields was a 4 year college player who is basically maxed out on what he is going to be. Does anyone really expect anything more that 12 & 7 out of him going forward? Don't get me wrong - I'd sell the bones of my dead grandmother to get him on the Bulls - but his value to a rebuilding club isn't as great as that of someone like Gallo - who at least has 'potential'.

I'd move the Charlotte pick to nab Fields ... perhaps Denver would go for that instead.

i'd do that too. dirt cheap well-rounded rookie that would send bogans to the end of the bench? sign me up

LOL. I love this - you can't make it up if you try.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/41683553

From his hotel suite in Beverly Hills, New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov was playing coy on Sunday afternoon when asked what exactly happened in his short meeting with Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony yesterday.

"It was a fantastic meeting, trust me," Prokhorov said, smiling. "No words, live music, excellent atmosphere. We looked into each other's eyes. Just real man talk."

snip

"As you know, my instinct was to stay away and I still think that is (the) right decision," said Prokhorov, in a wide-ranging interview which will air on CNBC on Tuesday. "But when the meeting was fixed, (Nets GM) Billy King called me and said, 'We need you.' I was convinced and I still think I'm right to stay away, but we have teamwork so sometimes we need to be all together."

snip

"Carmelo is in a difficult situation..For him, maybe it's the most important decision of his life.”

snip

"I think we made a very good tactical decision to force (the) Knicks to pay as much as they can," Prokhorov said. "So it's very good, it's very interesting, it's very competitive."

snip

Is the pressure getting to Prokhorov? Probably not. He's going heliskiing in Canada tomorrow.

If he's admitting this before a deal is even done, and while it's hilarious, he's not as bright as I would have assumed he was.

He's not admitting that they're not getting Carmelo - but he is saying that tactically it was the right move, because even if they lose out - the Knicks will have to pay more because of NJ's involvement.

The Knicks have made their offer - its not getting changed.

I have to say, if NY can pull that off it'll be a very solid deal for them. I still wouldn't understand why Minny wouldn't hold them up for a higher ransom; Minny would be giving up a huge chunk of capspace, and making the whole thing financially worthwhile for Denver, while trading Brewer and a 1st for Anthony Randolph. But that's their problem. If they go along, the trade could wind up benefiting both teams. Denver would save a huge amount of money right now, although they'll eventually have to pay for both Gallo and Chandler if they want to re-sign those guys. The NJ deal would be better for Denver, but if Melo won't extend with NJ then Denver has to get the best deal that they can.

From NY's perspective the proposed trade won't break the bank next season, and their team would be pretty darned good this year. Not championship good, but definitely better than before and without having given up much at all.

Billups/ Douglas/ Carter
Fields/ Walker/ Brewer
Melo/ Brewer/ Shawne Williams
Amare/ Turiaf
Mozgov/ SheWill

Next year they'll still be able to offer Billups (big expiring) plus any or all of Douglas, Fields, and Walker-- and/or Brewer and SheWill, if they're signed to cheap short-term deals-- in exchange for CP3 or DWill, if either or both of those guys demand out and specify NY (as Melo would have done successfully).

That deal isn't right.

Its being reported as:

Felton, Chandler, Gallo, Corey Brewer, NYK 2014 1st to Denver

Anthony Randolph & Eddy Curry's bloated corpse to Minnesota

Melo, Billups, Balkman, S Williams to NY

Yep deal would only work if Brewer goes to Denver.

Doesnt matter. Denver would let Melo walk if they are only getting 1 first rounder from the Knicks.

Yikes.... looks like a poo-poo platter to me. Those guys will not be enough to nab Williams or Paul (unless Fields makes a significant leap, which is unlikely).

Not on talent alone, of course not. But if Melo has already successfully strong-armed his way to the Knicks as his team of choice, and if DWill and/or CP3 also tell their teams that they won't re-sign with anyone but the Knicks, then Utah and NOH will be forced in the same game of chicken that Denver has had to play. One big expiring contract of a guy who can still play, plus assorted young talent (Fields is pretty good, Douglas and Walker are decent)-- or draft picks, if the Knicks can trade the preceding to other teams for picks-- might be all they can get.

Return to Chicago Bulls
