Opportunities Created: Measuring playmaking

Post#1 » by ElGee » Fri Feb 18, 2011 6:00 pm

Something I've tracked for a while - it's an attempt to measure who creates opportunities for teammates by drawing extra defensive pressure.

Here are the leaders from the 2010 playoffs: http://elgee35.wordpress.com/2011/02/22 ... -playoffs/

BTW, same story so far this year for games I've tracked. Nash ahead of the field...

Nash is a guy whose legacy IMO will become greater as we distance ourselves from his career. He's going to be really rise up on those Offensive GOAT lists. I know he's won two MVPs, but his impact has still been slightly underrated.
But in his home dwelling...the hi-top faded warrior is revered. *Smack!* The sound of his palm blocking the basketball... the sound of thousands rising, roaring... the sound of "get that sugar honey iced tea outta here!"

Well, I can't track every game in the RS. The plan is to make some inferences based on sample at the end of the season. (I should end up with a nice 20 or so games from elite teams like LA, Chi, Miami, Boston, SAS) From the games I've done so far this year:

Player - OC (Games) - Ast/36 in those games
Nash 18.4 (4 games) - 12.4
Rose 15.6 (7 games) - 8.0
Kobe 14.3 (12 games) - 7.0
Westbrook 12.5 (5 games) - 9.9
D. Will 11.8 (5 games) - 10.5

I think I'm going to end up with about 10 more Suns games, but I expect Nash to stay at the top. I'll have more on this in detail in April.

As I wrote on your blog ElGee: Great stuff.

Re the sample from this season, Rondo's not even in the top 5? Wow.

I've got 8 Celtics games (554 possessions for Rondo). Rondo's at 6.3 OC/100.

I keep saying this about Rondo and Boston - he makes good passes, he doesn't break down the defense. Allen draws attention off his curls. Pierce can create well. Even KG into double-teams (those three are all around 5 OC/100.)

The implication is that on an average team, Rondo's assists numbers would plummet. He runs that offense well, but it's predicated more on movement and screens (and intelligent passes) more so than a star or two breaking down the defense.

Agree about Rondo. A big reason he doesnt' have higher OC/100 is the way the Boston offense is run. He's rarely given Iso's or pick and rolls and asked to break down the defense. That's why it bugs me when he is crowned such a great playmaker by some people.

I think his assists to 8-9 a game on a different team but I would also expect this OC/100 to rise as well as I think he is capable of increasing his break down sequences.
