OKC is likely to acquire...

Post#1 » by fallacy » Tue Feb 22, 2011 9:25 pm

Hasheem Thabeet

UUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Word is that OKC is close to acquiring Thabeet from the Grizzlies if Presti can get him for the right price, since Nene is looking to sign an extension with DEN. I frankly don't want him at any price.

He would definitely add size to our team though...

Stop it. No. Not only is Thabeet on the books for $5M next season (money that could be used to get a real center), but taking him off Memphis' hands basically ensures that they will be able to retain Gasol and Randolph in the offseason.

I agree, its a (Please Use More Appropriate Word) move to acquire him. I would only want him if he was guaranteed to come into his potential.

This was reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, who i guess is a respected reporter

Woj is usually reliable. This just better be Presti's way of doing due diligence.

doesn't surprise me, Presti liked Hasheem before the draft in 2008. I wouldn't mind the move as long as we are only giving up a late 1st or a few 2nd rounders.

Thabeet was actually fairly productive for a rookie last season in limited minutes, which is kind of surprising.

He's completely regressed this season however.

Slightly torn on this. I obviously would rather have the money spent on a better, more reliable center.

On the other hand, I still stubbornly think he has a bit of potential.

Thabeet is 24 years old and hasn't done much in the NBA except block shots and foul. There's no reason to project him more than, say, Joel Anthony. Is that worth $5.1M + whatever draft selection it takes to get him? Absolutely not.

If Thabeet were expiring this season he'd absolutely be worth taking a look. But the odds that Thabeet will be worth his salary next season plus the opportunity cost of losing cap flexibility this offseason are extremely low.

The only deal that will work is MoPete for Thabeet and a filler.

Memphis wants Thabeet out badly. OKC won't give up much. Def not any good draft picks. Probably a 2099 2nd rounder

If this goes through, it's an obvious sign that Presti isn't optimistic about our chances of getting a free agent center, or at least not a high value one.

Eh, whats one more project center? Bust centers are to the Thunder what hookers are to Charlie Sheen.

Thabeet is not low cost. He's owed $5.1M next season.

Low cost to aquire. 5.1 million is less than what the Thunder are paying Mo Pete this season. The Thunder also like to have a player expiring every season on the roster. (ie. Ethan Thomas and Mo Pete) I think Sammy likes to have an expiring contract on there roster.

It is a 18-month maybe even less project to see what he has. I see this as a no brainer addition. The Thunder would have 4 Young Centers in Aldrich, Thabeet, Mullens, and Pleiss. Hopefully one or two of them will pan out.

Morris Peterson was the price of Cole Aldrich, his salary on the books is immaterial. His $$$ are attached to Aldrich. Thabeet's salary is entirely him, and there's no way he will be worth it. Especially considering the salary flexibility the Thunder are likely to have.

Shades of Seattle with Swift, Petro, and Sene? Bring in lots of 7 footers and cross your fingers?

Nene wants extension in Denver - in 5 year, $50M-plus range - but sources say he's intrigued with how he'd fit into OKC. Feeling's mutual.
