New Nuggets Arrive in Denver, Glad to be Moving On

DENVER -- Wilson Chandler just got to Denver and he already wants to stay.

That's easy to say now. Still, it has to be comforting news for Nuggets fans.

"I'm pretty sure I'll like it,'' Chandler, one of five players acquired Tuesday by the Nuggets in a blockbuster trade in which they gave up Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups, said of being a restricted free agent this summer. "What the future holds, hopefully I'll come back next year.''

Chandler was acquired from the Knicks in a three-team deal along with forward Danilo Gallinari, guard Raymond Felton and center Timofey Mozgov. All arrived midway through Denver's 120-107 win Tuesday night over Memphis at the Pepsi Center and got a good ovation from the crowd.

The Nuggets also picked up center Kosta Koufos from Minnesota, and he will arrive Wednesday. The Nuggets have pushed practice back a few hours in anticipation of having all their new players.

In the meantime, all must get used to their new surroundings.

"I feel great (to be traded to the Nuggets). ... I know the high in Denver right now,'' Mozgov, who speaks limited English, said, apparently referring to the city's altitude.

But nobody, apparently, has a serious case of altitude sickness. Felton said all four players from New York have passed their physicals.

With Koufos expected to pass his Wednesday, all the players should be eligible to play Thursday against Boston. Barring any unforeseen problems, all the players who went from Denver to New York, with Shelden Williams, Renaldo Balkman and Anthony Carter joining Anthony and Billups, should be eligible to play for the Knicks at home Wednesday against Milwaukee.

A source close to the situation said the Nuggets won't make another deal by Thursday's trade deadline unless there's something that knocks the team's "socks off.'' The source doesn't expect J.R. Smith to be traded, and that the Nuggets want to re-sign him. That echoes what Smith and Denver executive vice president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri previously has said.

Nuggets coach George Karl said Ty Lawson will be Denver's starting point guard for at least the next week or two while Felton will come off the bench. Felton, despite being an All-Star candidate with averages of 17.1 points and 9.0 rebounds, said that's OK with him.

"I've got no problem with that,'' Felton said. "I'm here to play basketball. I'm a great teammate. I figure I'm going to be playing... It's not all about starting.''

Felton didn't mind escaping from all the trade talk that has been going on in New York, as well as Denver, since last summer.

"I'm just glad it's all over with,'' Felton said. "Now, we can go back to playing basketball. ... (The trade talk) was very distracting. We just wanted to play basketball. We didn't want to deal with all the craziness. It was crazy, and it was getting out of hand. So I'm glad it got done.''

Karl anticipates Gallinari will be the only one of Denver's new players to immediately start. He is expected to replace Anthony, a four-time All-Star, at small forward, but claims there is no pressure on him.

"Not really,'' Gallinari said. "That's a team sport. So everybody has to do their job and everybody has their responsibility.''

With Gallinari starting, Karl said Chandler likely will be the sixth man. He has no problem with that.

"That's fine with me if I come off the bench,'' Chandler said. "That's cool. I have no problem with it.''

Chandler was saying all the right things Tuesday, including wanting to re-sign this summer with the Nuggets.

Ready to come in and play. Gotta love them.

You really got 3 great guys. They aren't superstars but if you give them a chance you'll really really like them a lot.

Considering the circumstances the deal is really a win win for both teams. Congrats Nugget fans.

Nuggets are scary deep right now.

Lawson / Felton
Afflalo / Smith
Gallinari / Chandler
Martin / Harrington
Nene / Andersen

The bench is about as good as the starting lineup.

Fixed to show the complete depth. One of the deepest teams in the league honestly. I wouldn't mind seeing Chandler and Harrington moved to open up some playing time for some other guys, but too much depth is never really that bad of an issue.

Sounds to me that they're excited to be on an actual winning team rather than a 50% one.

I don't get why you guys wanted Felton if you're not going to start him. Surely you could spin him somewhere to a team in need of a point guard for something decently valuable?

imo this team is too deep. Lawsome,Felton,Chandler,Gallinari,Afflalo,JR Smith,Martin,Harrington and Nene alle deserve 30+ minutes per game.

Would be good to get rid of Harringtons contract as a start. Also Felton is too good to come of the bench, gotta trade him if you want lawson to start.

I don't see why everyone thinks we should trade Felton or start him. The guy isn't so good that he HAS to start. Honestly, I think Lawson is the better player. Time will tell who the starter should be. If Felton outplays Lawson, I'm sure Karl will do the right thing.

That said, neither Lawson or Felton are 20mpg players. Normally we could give one of them some burn at the 2, but with JR and AA playing so well, it would be hard to find time to run two point guards. We have the same problem at the 3 with Forbes, Chandler, and Gallo. Someone has to go. Personally, I think the odd men out should be JR and Chandler.

I don't get it either, Felton was very close to be named an eastern allstar this year, and now he's on the bench, behind Lawson? Doesn't make sense to me.

Felton has great value on the market, he's cheap, his contract is short, he produces, he's a warrior and a good defender. By benching him, his value will go down for sure.

From what little I've seen of the Knicks this year, I'd be surprised if Chandler doesn't end up in our starting lineup pretty soon. He's been the most impressive in my view (and he blew up on my fantasy team). I have to say, at this point, I'm pretty excited and glad things went down the way they did (getting the NY deal over the NJ deal). Wouldn't be able to watch our draft picks play tomorrow night against Boston. It sounds like we're getting some team-first, good all-around players. And last night might be a fluke but it looked like certain players (Ty and JR, in particular) were uncaged and are ready to step up into leadership roles.

If anything we need Galinari with the starters for the kickouts from Nene, he is by far the better outside shooter between Gallo and Chandler.

Personally i would look to move Harrington, Chandler, Andersen, and possibly Felton if we get the right pieces coming back.

I'm not going to pretend that I've seen many Nuggets games this year, because I haven't...not yet at least lol. However, if the Nuggets are going into full rebuilding mode, Ujiri should look to trade Harrington first. To be honest, I'm kinda surprised that the Nuggets are not talking with the Mavericks (Cuban offered Harrington the same contract that the Nuggets did this past summer).

As for Gallo being used for kickouts from Nene - it's a good idea, but you don't want him camping like D'Antoni made him do most of the time. Gallo, while is a great outside shooter, is VERY good at getting to the line as a slasher/driver. Also, even though Gallo was not the designated point forward, he showed a bunch of times that when he has the ball in his hands, he can create for others off the dribble. Karl should put the ball in his hands and let him create/drive/create for others instead of being a spot up shooter. You don't want him shooting 6 threes a game; you want him mixing it up. He and Nene (if he ends up staying), could make a very good combination if both are used correctly.

Yeah I'd like to add that I think Gallo has been misused by D'Antoni. I think if used correctly Gallo can become much better very soon.

BTW you'll like Chandler a lot. There was one point last season where he had close to 20 consecutive games where he didn't shoot under 50% from the field, averaging around 15points. The dude is really a nice allround player.

I don't think the Nuggets are going into a full rebuild, from the sound of things they choose to go ahead with the Knicks trade, Melo was said to have expected to be end up a Net as late as monday. Given that and the comments from the team, it looks like they are viewing this more as a reload, and with some cap space next summer, they may stay a playoff team, meaning you have to look more at fit, then future assets. Harrington can go, because we now have young bigs, and Galinari who can shoot from the outside and has already been named the starter at SF.

You obviously do not know much about Karl, he is not going to allow anybody to camp out at the 3 point line, even Afflalo who is one of the best 3 point shooters in the league is expected to drive more then he shoots from outside.

Also Karl has said he wants to go back to a ball movement system which is based more on the drive and kick principal, but could not because of former personnel prior to the trade. Given the way that all of our players can pass and move the ball now, the offense should fit well with just about everybody. The only players that this may not work for is Kmart (who will be gone this summer) and Harrington gets sticky hands some times. The rest seem to have no problem moving the ball, and for the most part have decent all around games.

Where do you have Mozgov in your lineup? do you expect him to be traded? I think he'll be traded for pick(s)

Every indication is that Mozgov and gallo are not going to be moved, they were the pieces the Nuggets needed and wanted. IF anything andersen will be the one moved.

Hmm.. Ujiri should be on the phone with the clippers and nets right now trying to unload gallo...
After his contract is up i really doubt he re-signs with you guys knowing the Nets will be in brooklyn and the clippers will have gordon+ griffin

Why would Galinari not resign in Denver?

Return to Denver Nuggets
