What I was going to say was this.
At the end of the day, we're both Nets fans. The highest goal for any fan is to see their team win a championship.
Here's a hypothetical conversation between you and me:
Rev: So I hear that you only support the Nets when they are actually a winning team. What gives? A fan should be a FAN of his team always, no matter what.
NyCe: Well, it's not as easy as that. There are 5 types of teams. 1) A championship contender 2) Playoff team on the rise 3) Playoff team that is stagnant 4) Team on the decline 5) Completely rebuilding team (but is also on the rise)
I like the direction of teams 1, 2, and 5. I don't like the direction of teams 3 and 4 though.
Rev: You need to support your team no matter what. You're not a true fan.
NyCe: Wait, I do support my team. There is just a difference between supporting the team as a whole and supporting their direction. Teams 1, 2, and 5 are teams whose direction is heading towards a championship. I still support teams 3 and 4, I just don't like the direction they're heading in.
Rev: I don't understand team 5 though. Even though they're aspiring to be a good team, the reality is that they're currently not. Why would you support them.
NyCe: Ok, well the Nets are like team 5. Going into the current season, you already know that even if they tried their best, they're not going to make the playoffs by a long shot. Even if the stadium was packed every night, you know the team isn't capable of being a playoff team. However, what makes this team exciting is that you get to watch them grow and make improvements. Even if they're currently bad, you look at the big picture and see that the team is heading toward that ultimate goal even if it's far away at that point.
Rev: Ok, but you also want them to get a higher draft pick too? Why?
NyCe: Knowing that my team is going to lose, I'm not surprised or shocked at the end of the season, that we're heading home in April. I fully supported the team but they just did not have the talent to make it far. What hope do I have for a team that is nowhere close to making the playoffs? The hope that whatever draft pick, we get will help us improve our record the following season.
Rev: Yeah, but you know how draft picks become busts? Why hope to do well in the draft?
NyCe: Well, if your team is bad, no star that could potentially improve your team would want to go to your team. Also, if you're a bad team, you don't have the players to trade to another team in order to get a good player that will improve your team. Even if the draft does guarantees success, the chances of me getting a good player in the draft that will help my team are much greater than a star deciding to come to play for my bad team or a good team trading a good player for a bad team's bad players. Those chances are actually slim to none. Without the draft, there is almost no hope for your team to actually improve.
Rev: So you're all about improving?
NyCe: No, I'm not ALL about improving. I like when my teams improve because it means that we're getting closer to the end goal but that doesn't mean that I won't support my team. I'll still support them. I'll just be hoping that they make a change that will put them in a position where they are improving again and moving towards a championship.
Rev: So what does that mean for teams 3 and 4?
NyCe: It means that I still support even though they're moving farther away from their intended goal. So even if team 3 and 4 decide to get even worse in the present but decide to rebuild, it gives me assurance that the FO still cares about winning and winning big as much as I care. It shows me that they know we're not going to get close to our end goal in a few years no matter what we do but they'll tear it down with the hopes that when they reassemble their team with new, young talent from the draft, the team will have the potential to surpass their previous level of success and get closer to the goal. I still want to see my team win and I still support them yet at the same time every team knows that you play to win a championship and bring joy to your city and fans. If you're regressing from that goal then you need to evaluate your franchise to see what you can do to get closer to that goal. As the cliche goes, sometimes you need to take one step back to go two steps forward.
