Billy King and Kevin O'Connor are friends that go way back. They always talk. It started off talking about Kirilenko, but nothing came to fruition so before they stopped, O'Connor said something like, "Is that all, anyone else?" Half jokingly King said, "What about Deron?" Then that's how things went down. Read about it on ESPN.

NBA trade deadline expires without the Orlando Magic making a deal
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/o ... 4658.story
"The team we have, I like," Magic General Manager Otis Smith said early Thursday evening. "Our problem at this point has nothing to do with not having a backup center. That's not our issue right now."

Asked what the team's problem is, Smith responded, "We haven't made shots. I wish I could tell you it was something we had to do differently. We just have to make shots."

Are you kidding me Otis? "We just have to make shots"? Are you kidding me?? No back-up center for Dwight with the playoffs just around the corner? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!

How do we make shots with teams knowing to single-coverage Dwight, making JRich Ryan JJ Turk Arenas Nelson all useless.

technically, he's right. looking at the splits, the only noticeable difference between W's and L's with this team is FG%.

unfortunately the stats don't show how we give up leads, don't play defense and shoot ourselves into a hole with cold shooting and poor shot selection. but, statistically, he is right.

still, if that's his line, how does that reflect on this team's playoff hopes? what if we just "don't make shots" then? what's expected to change between now and then other than a hot streak?

Hilltop wrote:All these losses and all this player movement around the league has probably tripled the pressure on his ass to get something done. I'm sure he has been on the phones. But we eventually go back to the reality that we don't have many assets that other teams covet.

I'm sure he would love to land a big name player and join the mix, but he can't. He already went all in with Gilbert Arenas and Turkoglu, two immovable contracts. Before that, he signed Redick, Duhon, and Richardson to long-term deals. The man has no vision. He is all about the here and now. He is all about spending top dollar on anything that has a pulse.

Give Dwight Howard and $90 million to any GM and tell me with a straight face that they can't replicate the success he achieved or even surpass it.

Seriously, what the hell is this guy thinking?

DIdn't he tell Cho (Portland's GM) that he "dodged a bullet" by not matching TO's offer to Turk? Then he turns around and trades for him?

Handing out that max deal to Rashard? Why?

I'm sorry, but I don't think someone with such a lack of vision can be fit to run this team. Like you said, and standard GM could do what he has done with a blank check and Dwight Howard.

Hell, I'm sure even regular GM's wouldn't give Rashard a max deal. And then trade it for the only contract that's even worse.

Magic hope to avoid 'Melo mess with Howard
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/o ... 407.column
..."We hope we're not in a Carmelo Anthony situation with Dwight," Magic General Manager Otis Smith said...

...Smith said it wasn't necessary to get an answer from Howard. You'd expect the Magic to have an inkling at some point, but trading him is the last thing on their minds.

Howard can opt out after next season and go through the recruiting process as a free agent.

"We're not going to change the way we do business: We're going to let this play out behind closed doors," Smith said...

...A former NBA general manager requesting anonymity said trying to extract a declaration from Howard or any other pending free-agent superstar is nearly impossible.

"It's a good question, but I just don't think that happens anymore. Your representative says, 'Keep your options open.' What, we had three guys this summer — LeBron [James], [Chris] Bosh and Amar'e [Stoudemire] — and they didn't tell their teams they were definitely leaving.

"I think Otis has to keep communication open all the time with [Howard] and show him they're trying to put the best team on the floor they can."

The former GM wondered whether the Magic can dramatically improve the club, considering their high payroll and taking on more money through trades they have already made this season...

He needs to be fired today. If you are Otis, you don't even discuss the Dwight situation with the media. This guy is beyond incompetent.

Why does he need to discuss the situation with the media? Why would this make you call for his job?

You know what? I would be completely fine if after this season we just blow up the whole team with the exception of Dwight. Let J Rich expire and then just rack up expiring contracts. Then we let Dwight build his own team in 2012.
