Outside Shooting

Post#1 » by babyjax13 » Sat Feb 26, 2011 2:54 am

The Jazz have two players that shoot over 36% from three now, Andrei Kirilenko - who is having a freak shooting season - and Gordan Hayward who only plays 13 minutes a game. Moving forward this is going to be a huge problem for this team. I think (well, mostly hope) that our defensive woes are pretty much solved with this rotation of players, but we really need to add someone in the offseason who can hit the three. Coming up we're going to have our MLE and two lottery picks to solve this problem while adding some players that can really help us become a better team in the future. Really a lot of it is going to come down to whether or not the Jazz want to try and solve the problem now, or in the off season (likely the case).

For what it's worth, here are my picks for current NBA free agents the Jazz could sign:
1. Kyle Weaver: shoots 43% from three this year in the NBDL. Has a nice shooting stroke, not going to shoot as well in the NBA though. Still young, is a great defender. Originally drafted as a point guard so he has good ball handling abilities (ala Raja Bell).
2. Da'Sean Butler: Don't know why Butler was cut, looks like he can become a very good NBA player to me, but he is very unproven at this point
3. Steve Novak: Best shooter in the game, just can't do anything else. Shooting 64% from three in the NBDL.
4. Rashad McCants: Good shooter, wasn't a horrible player in the NBA, shoots 43% from 3.
5. Danny Green: Same boat as Butler. Shoots 41% from 3 and he has picture-perfect form. Could easily become a good role-player.
6. Shane Edwards: 23 and statistically the best D-League player this year. Averages 19 and 7 off of 50% 3-pt shooting.

Next year there are plenty of free agents that can really help us. Jamal Crawford could be targeted, Anthony Parker, Reggie Williams (my #1 pick), Shane Battier and Rasual Butler will all be free agents. At our point in the draft there will also be Jimmer (but we have Harris), Jordan Hamilton and Bojan Bogdonavic (total sleeper pick this year, I think I butchered his name though).

I can't wait to see what happens for the rest of the year, but I have a feeling the Jazz will see a lot of teams packing the paint with defenders.

There's rumors that Kapono is being bought out by the Sixers since they're not even using him. He could be a good addition if we can get him for cheap.

The only way the Jazz get any of those FA is if ther isnt a lock out and in a sign and trade for AK/Okur they wouldnt be coming for MLE maybe Shane? Or the Jazz trade their two (or one) lotto pick for along with another chip for a shooter already in the league.

I think these are all guys that will get signed with a Mid-Level Exception (which the Jazz have) although I wouldn't be surprised if they moved CJ Miles (maybe in a S+T with Golden State for Williams).

Well with the new CBA teams may not be able to do much of anything and some of these players who dont have contracts could end up having to sign one year deals for the league min. If there is a hard cap just until enouh cap space comes open on a team to get a good pay check?

I think he could play well for us, he's just not a very good defender and he is getting up there in age.

I can finally get behind the spread-the-floor mania now that we have legitimate interior defenders.

I expect us to get our shooters from the draft. I mean, we could try to make a trade this summer for a veteran shooter, but it's more likely that we draft a shooter to fill the role. Until then, let's hope Hayward earns minutes fast, Kirilenko continues to hit it, Bell gets his shot back, and maybe even see Okur get healthy.
In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.

Watch the Jazz move down on the draft and get Jimmer.

I like Novak alot! He should be in the NBA, but the Jazz arent making anymore moves as they dont want to pay anymore players. They are also hoping Memo comes in and shoots good if he ever comes back.
Top 4 seed in the West!!! Guaranteed!!!

Dumping CJ and giving his shots to almost anyone else would improve the Jazz's outside shooting tremendously.

The Jazz are not contenders now, and none of these players are long term solutions.

Trades during the up coming draft can not contain players on existing contracts unless a new CBA is signed before the draft.
