what kind of messed up logic is that?!.

Like Crowned said a good/great defencemen will excel no matter who his defence partner is.

Understood, but Dion is a great d-man. He does it all and imho is a Pronger-lite he hits hard, has a great one-timer from the point and is a good passer. All you would need to do is get him to work on his agressiveness just a bit. He does play with passion but he lets it get the best of him and that draws out bad penelty's.

To call Dion crap is pretty far from the truth or asinine at least to me, give him to me anyday for anybody not named Datsyuk or Zetterberg. Yes that does mean you can have Lidstrom

where did I call him crap? I said hes overrated which he is when you have fans saying he's currently a legit norris candidate. Being a great defencemen and being mentioned as a norris candidate means you have to be above average in your own end and at this point in time Phaneuf isnt.

Defencemen who are currently better then Phaneuf-

Pronger
Zubov
Lidstrom
Rafalski
Andrei Markov
Brian Campbell
Lubo Visnovski
Micheal Rozival

You laugh at us for saying Phaneuf is Norris worthy yet everyone disagrees with you. You really don't watch hockey do you?

Kid I watch twice as much hockey as you and know far more about the sport. Its people like you who only watch Flames games and watch sportscenter highlights of Phaneuf laying out big hits and then think hes a elite level defencemen in the league. If Phaneuf is elite level then so is

Brent Burns
Shea Weber
Ryan Suter

again Phaneuf isnt a LEGIT norris candidate.

Rozival isn't better then Phaneuf I am sorry but he just isn't if any GM where to pick between Miceal and Dion I am sure Dion would get the nod in this one by more GM's.

You do realize that both Rafalski and Lidstrom and linemates so your arguement of "will excel no matter who his defence partner is." I am sure Lidstrom will have a better career then Dion but I wouldn't say he's a better d-man now. You also have to take in effect that Detroit is one of the best defensive teams in the league 8th overall behind Rangers, 'Canes and Jackets (same games played) and Sens, Islanders, Bruins and Sens (2-3 games less played).

The Flames are having a bad year if you put Dion on a better defensive minded team I am sure he would be alot higher in the race for teh Norris and the fact that his team is among the worse teams for GAA (Goals agenst per game) says something right there.

did you just say your sure Lidstrom will have a better career but Lidstrom isnt currently better then Phaneuf? Are you serious? Lidstrom is a FAR FAR better player then Phaneuf right now. Pheneuf can only hope one day he reaches the level of where Lidtsrom is currently at.

Also if your going to use some stat to try to prove something make sure its actually legit. Det is ranked #6 overall in terms of GAA not 8th like you said. Rosival so far this season has been better then Phaneuf but im sure most gm's would take Phaneuf over him seeing Phaneuf will be better in the future but this season Rosival has been the better overall dman.

Phaneuf is -6 in his last 6 games and his +/- is going downhill fast and he makes numerous gaffs in his own end on a nightly basis but most people dont care about these because they see him make a highlight reel hit or score a goal so all these shortcomings go unnoticed. Again there have been at least 8-9 defencemen who have been better this season then Phaneuf.

if you honestly think Dion is currently better then Lidstrom I question how you became a Mod

geez kipper hasnt been exactly sharp, so ya he could be -6 but half the goals against Kipper have been soft. People called me stupid when I said trade Kipper not sign him and hes been worth not even half of that penny.

Your really small minded. He tried blocking a shot last night andthe guy saw that and passed it to filpulla.

No your the small minded one who thinks Phaneuf is a legit norris candidate when they are at least 8-9 players who have been better then him so far this season. A big part of the reason why Kipper has also been crap is because his defence in front of him has been horrible and if Phaneuf is so great and gets so much ice time youd think they wouldnt be nearly as bad as they are as a defensive unit.

BlueJay_ Lidstrom plays on one of the most balenced teams in the league and played with a Dynasty possibly the best sports franchise in the 90's (Detroit). I am saying Dion is better (value wise) then Lidstrom is now. I am sure if you put both on teams that didn't have the depth we (Detroit) has I am sure Nik's numbers will not be as good as they are now.

One good year dosn't mean that Rozival is the better d-man look at Dion's numbers from last year as well. Sure Michal was a +/- 35 from last year but he did play with the Rangers who were one hell of a offensive team. Give it time and you will see how good Dion really is.

Lidstrom is a big reason to why those detroit teams where so good and is one of the best defencemen to ever play and all you have to do is look at his norris trophys. How the hell is Phaneuf better value wise? Lidstrom is the BEST blueliner in the entire league and worth the max. Phaneuf is nowhere close to Lidstroms level and can only hope to be one day in the future. Put Lidstrom on any team in the NHL and he'd still be top 5 in terms of defencemen scoring.

Rozivals stats from last year are very similar to that of Phaneufs and he plays alot better in his own end. Where the hell do you get the idea that the Rangers where a very good offensive team last season? (They were 18th overall in terms of goals for). That doesnt sound like that great of a offensive team to me  .

No ones saying Phaneuf isnt a good player or wont be a elite level defencemen in the future but for people to say right now he's a legit norris candidate this makes him overrated in my mind. A elite level defencemen has to play defence at a well above average level and make well above average decisions on the ice and I dont see this on a regular basis with Phaneuf.

I thought that did not matter when it comes to Phaneuf but it does when its about Lidstrom.

You call me small minded when everyone else disagrees with you. Your insane if you think Roszival is better.

Detroit fans want Phaneuf, and the Leaf fan wants Lidstrom.....why dont you worry about your sadass team instead of critisizing talent you want but will never get.

your homerism is hilarious.

Lidstrom is good in his own end, Phaneuf isnt.

Rozival was a all around better defencemen last year and so far this season has also been. Playing defence includes what you do in your own zone but it seems like you dont understand this concept.

Detroit fans want Phaneuf? Im sure every team in the league would want a player like him on there team, what does that have to do with the fact that he is overrated? Id take him on the leafs anyday of the week but that doesnt change that fact that hes nowhere near the player Nik Lidstrom is.

Last time I looked your team was also a non playoff team and actually have a whole 1 Point more then the Leafs. You shouldnt be talking because neither the Flames or the Leafs will be making the playoffs this year.

So I guess Raply, Zetterberg and Datsuyk and Draper are just nobodies then right. Zetterberg is a reason why we are doing so good. I am not saying Nik isn't good hell he's a HHOF for sure but at this point and time I would take Dion over Nik right now. So what if Nik would be a top 5 scoring defensemen McCabe and Souray were among the best scoring d-men does that mean their the best in the world? and worth more then a Bouwmeister (sp) Lubomir Visnovsky, Zubov or alot of others?

so let me get this straight, your saying that Phaneuf is currently better then Lidstrom? I mean thats what it means when you say "but at this point and time I would take Dion over Nik right now".

You have to be crazy to take Phanuef over Lidstrom. Were not talking about which player youd rather have for the next 5-7 years, where talking about which player is currently better and if you seriously think Phaneuf is better then Lidstrom you need to have your head checked.

Like I said about 4 years ago, Phaneuf is BADLY overrated.
Cant believe this stiff was once nominated for the norris.
