I wisely elected to watch The Social Network instead of the game last night. Man, that Aaron Sorkin know's how to right a fricken screen-play, great entertain. Justin Timberlake was a pleasant surprise....very good acting and direction.

If my dorkiness was not already safely established here's some more fodder. This has been a peeve of mine for a while but Limitless is the most recent offender so I'll focus on it. If I never had to hear the phrase "it's said that humans only use 20% of their brain, what would happen if you could use all of it" again I would be deeply satisfied and my goodness do writers love to trot that gem out. I long for the movie where someone is asked that question and responds "probably I'd be having a seizure" directed right to the camera and then roll credits.

Speaking of "Exit Through the Gift Shop," which I finally caught on ppv a few weeks back. Has anyone else noticed that someone has hacked Comcast's cable listings replacing certain words with some variation of the word "Banksy." It happens (only occasionally) when you press the "info" button to see what a certain program is about. For instance, a hacked version of the NBA all-star game info blurb might read something like "The NBA all stars play at The Banksy Arena in Los Angeles."

No only that, but whenever the professor's well-funded research team at the university discovers away to access that other 80%, it always seems to consist of pure evil, greed, and unadulterated power lust. And the subjects voice becomes deeper and more resonant.

pancakes -- I think we have similar taste in movies. I liked Juno, but didn't think it rose to the level of greatness. It was good, though.

For the 1980s I would have The Empire Strikes Back slightly ahead of Raiders of the Lost Ark. For the 1990s other contenders would be The Shawshank Redemption (although it doesn't do that much for me) and Schindler's List.

For the 2000s The Dark Knight and LOTR: The Return of the King come to mind. Movie of the decade to me does not necessarily mean "the best" movie but combines quality and impact.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree on Juno. Personally, I think it's one of the greatest movie openings in history (and one of the greatest "sign of the times" movies ever). Watch the beginning again, and check for the symbolism -- how they throw stereotypically "all-American kid" images at you to allow you to watch her develop from a girl to a woman in the space of ten minutes. Her drinking juice out of the carton was genius.

Anyway, Big Lebowski, Usual Suspects, Raising Arizona, Animal House, ET, Mississippi Burning, Taxi Driver, Sixth Sense, Jaws and the Shining belong in this discussion -- as runner-ups in most cases.

i think s too nivek. i think it is the "writer" inside of us

if we're going to nominate a movie of the 2000's i think it either has to either be a cultural phenomenon or a real deep commentary of the times. unfortunately, i can't think of any that quite... does it. In fact, i think the Matrix may be the closest thing that fits both categories adequately.

In the 1990's you could point to forrest gump, schindler's list, and even titanic as "decade-worthy" movies.

i'm really at a loss for the 2000's. it seems LOTR, Harry Potter, various superhero movies, and the occasional indie hit are all the cinematic milestones of that decade...

yeah. eternal sunshine or Matrix. :/

There's been a fair amount written about the relationship between 9/11 and the fantasy genre in movies and television; the comic-book movie has transitioned from campy niche product to mainstream, part of a mass shift toward escapism.

The difference between the 80s/90s Batman and the 00 Batman, even the 04/08 Hulk, etc. Spiderman, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings...

I'd take Dr. Strangelove for the 60s. Then, Apocalypse Now tied with Godfather. I'd take Raiders. Then, a tie between Pulp Fiction, Fight Club and Usual Suspects (leaning toward Usual Suspects). And, having been pushed, Memento tied with Almost Famous. Final answer, Regis.

BA, I might have to disagree with you in the 80's. Raiders might not even be the best movie of that trilogy, which in turn wasn't even the best trilogy of the 80s. Star Wars and Back to the Future are more iconic 80s movies. On top of Empire, and BTTF1,

and upon reconsideration of "best movie of the 00's" i submit that the best movies of that decade was... a documentary. Supersize Me, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Bowling for Columbine, Inconvenient Truth...all encompassed the spirit of the decade as well as any fictional movie could.
