Nnamdi Asomugha a FREE AGENT

Post#1 » by cdubbz » Mon Jan 10, 2011 1:02 am

What are the chances of the 49ers signing Nnamdi and keeping him in the bay area? I'm not sure at all on contracts and the NFL, but i know there still talking about contracts for next season.

Not too sure I liked any QBs in the draft -- they all seem like projects and was leaning toward wanting the 49ers to just grab a CB instead of a QB in the draft. Signing Nnamdi would allow the 9ers to focus entirely on a QB of the future.

Asomugha is probably going to be targeted by probably at least a dozen teams, within the next day or two they'll be an announcement of who the likely frontrunners are.

Yes please!

I think he wants to play for a good team, and I doubt he leaves the Raiders for a team that had a worse record in a weaker division...but who knows?

The problem with this offseason is that the order of the offseason process will be different this year. Normally free agent signing occurs before the draft. This year it will be opposite because of the CBA deals. Until a new agreement is met, free agency probably won't exist while the draft will. That means we will have to draft a cornerback either in the first or second round in case we can't land a player. Then we would most likely not be willing to spend the money. For me we should probably look at other cornerbacks like Champ Bailey or Bengals cornerback. None of this is me saying we shouldn't make an attempt at him but it is just trying to look at the realistic situation.

T

True. He can and probably wants to play for an already proven playoff team with a chance to be in the superbowl. The 49ers arent far off fomr making the playoffs, but it's not as certain as other teams.

I just really hope he doesn't go to a team like the Jets. Revis and Asomugha would be a scary combination.

True but then we could sign Cromartie and that would have to be an update on our current secondary.

I played with Nnamdi in the second ever Cal-Texas High School All-Star Game. I still talk to him from time to time. I haven't talked to him since the contract situation with the Raiders made him a free agent. I really hope once this labor issue is worked out that the 49ers sign him and Bob Sanders to strengthen our defensive backfield.

You are exactly right. I can't remember if it was Todd McShay or Mel Kipper. But one of them has us taking Patrick Patterson from LSU with our first round pick. That kid will be a beast but he still will be a rookie. Not many rookie corners take the league by storm. And when I say not many only guys like Primetime and Charles Woodson came in making big impacts.

I agree that Nnamdi would be a better choice but we cannot expect to land Nnamdi and therefore we have to address it in the draft. At that point would we be willing to spend the money on the best corner and a high draft pick. Probably not.

Peterson is being compared to Nnamdi and Revis in terms of his talent and how he plays. I think if he is available we have to get him for that potential.

Getting players to cross the bay has never been a problem for the 49ers or Raiders. The players don't have to move and it makes it easier. The labor issues make it a problem. We wouldn't know are chances of signing him until August or September.

Actually he has been compared to Charles Woodson but only faster. The labor issue is really messing with teams for the draft. Fact is we had the 24th ranked passing defense in the league and we need to improve our secondary big time. Weather its drafting Paterson, signing Nnamdi, or both we need to improve in that area immediately.
