Opponent 3 point FGs

Post#1 » by JazzFan4Life18 » Tue Mar 1, 2011 2:25 am

This had to be addressed. Why the f|_|ck are the Jazz so dead set on following a defensive philosophy that doesn't work? How many times do we let our opponents torch us from behind the arc?

Three straight wide open 3's by Ray Allen has me too pissed to even watch anymore.

We may have been beating this horse for a while, but it's alive and breathing.

No kidding.

I think we actually hit on this in the "Defense!" thread: watch where all the Jazz players are looking when a guard gets into the paint -- where the Jazz force him, by the way -- all five heads are looking at that guy in the paint and hedging toward him. That means they're at least 2 steps away from the 3-point line.

Its not just 3s, the Jazz play awful pick and roll defense. You could throw Stockton and Malone out there at their current age against this Jazz defense and they would rip it apart.

Jacque Vaughn is rolling over in his grave.

Well, the most glaring problem so far has been the inability of the defender to fight through the screen and keep up with his man. Deron was especially bad at that, and Bell is beyond horrible. That forces the big to come out, (sometimes to far out) to help and leaves the middle open. The weak side defender then has to cover the middle and the corner 3s open up. If the defender fights through the screen better, then the big has to show less and recover fast enought to close the lane thus avoiding the whole shuffle on the defense that usually ends with an open 3 or dunk. Harris is much better at it that Deron, and Hayward is just awsome (notice how little Ray Allen scored when Hayward played him). Price and Watson are preatty good at it too. Yet Bell, AK (mostly because he flops) and CJ (somewhat, not as bad as Bell, but still has to improve) are really bad at it and that's what hurts us.

Kings game-tying 3 was the least shocking thing of the season.

Knicks shot 13/26 from 3 against us.

Isn't this just astounding now? Teams are consistently shooting at 50% or above from 3 against us. Unprecedented.

Many of those shots are practice shots. Almost any NBA team will make over 50% if shots are not decently contested..... Jazz would make 30% of them though :(

Like I said the main problem is our SL wings' inability to run through screens which force our bigs to cover further outside and the rest of the team to rotate which usually means the weak side defender covers the paint, thus leaving that corner 3 open. When the ball is swung around, as our guys scramble to cover the 3pt line, there will most likely one player left wide open and well...

I think that's one of the most indicative reasons why the + - gap between Raja and Hayward has been so extreme and constant. Gordon runs through screens as well as I've seen anyone which allows our bigs not to go that far out and lets our defense stay on their man.

In the past 10 games, teams have been shooting near 50% against us from 3... and that's including Indiana's 2/14 night from 3 against us, where they were just missing a lot of open shots.

Yikes. You'd really think something like this, something so god damn fundamental, would be easily correctable. NOT WITH THIS TEAM!

Houston is torching us from 3: 7/12 so far.

Is our coach/team just really stupid? What the hell's the deal?

Since the all-star break:

@ Dallas: 10/20
@ Indiana: 2/14
@ Detroit: 11/17
vs Boston: 7/15
vs Denver: 6/17
vs Sacramento: 7/14
@ New York: 13/26
@ Toronto: 4/9
@ Minnesota: 10/17
@ Chicago: 18/32
vs Philadelphia: 8/21
vs Minnesota: 6/20
@ Houston (in progress): 8/14

110/236, 47%

How many of you guys can shoot 47% from 3 by yourselves with nobody on you?
