Race For The Stanley Cup Playoffs (CHI 8th)

Post#1 » by WEFFPIM » Sun Mar 6, 2011 2:20 am

The annual thread has returned for another exciting end of the NHL's regular season. As usual, teams will be removed when they're mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.

2. y-Philadelphia Flyers* (106 PTS; 47-23-12)
3. y-Boston Bruins (103 PTS; 46-25-11)
4. Pittsburgh Penguins (105 PTS; 49-25-8)
5. Tampa Bay Lightning (103 PTS; 46-25-11)
6. Montreal Canadiens (96 PTS; 44-30-8)
7. Buffalo Sabres (96 PTS; 43-29-10)
8. New York Rangers (93 PTS; 44-33-5)

5. Nashville Predators (99 PTS; 44-27-11)
6. Phoenix Coyotes (99 PTS; 43-26-13)

8. Chicago Blackhawks (97 PTS; 44-29-9)

*-Division Leader
x-clinched playoff berth

p-clinched President's Trophy

I'll update whenever I can and excuse any errors that might occur in the standings, especially in the West.

Some really big games tonight, too. Bruins and Sharks winning streaks come to an end, Sabres back within a point of eighth, Thrashers still alive. Coyotes rally back to avoid a six-game losing streak, Hawks streak at eight.

I love the NHL.

Buffalo leaps over Carolina into 8th, Calgary jumps to 5th. Minnesota grabs a point and slides them to 9th thanks to that new fancy tiebreaker of "most wins not including shootout wins."

We're also close to seeing a new leader in the East since Philly has decided to suck

This is a nice choke job by the Preds.

6-9-3 in their last 18 games.

Updated after last night's late game in LA, a dreaded three point game sends the Stars to 5th

A ton of games last night, but very little movement. Most of the games were out East but no one jumped or fell in the standings. Phoenix made the biggest move losing in OT, but that was up one spot. Hawks win streak was snapped, putting three teams behind them with 79 points.

All but one game tonight features battles of playoff hopefuls, so the standings will be achangin' again.

LA-Det tonight should be interesting. LA needs it more for sure, but with the Hawks charging up the standings I think we are getting a little nervous too

Re: Race For The Stanley Cup Playoffs (WSH 2nd; West reshuffles)

Post#10 » by WEFFPIM » Thu Mar 10, 2011 6:01 am

Let's start in the East:

Washington clobbered Edmonton to jump to 2nd, Tampa kept pace with a SO win over Chicago (a BS one, in my personal opinion). Atlanta's now back in the picture after a big win at Carolina in OT, but the Hurricanes now tied with Buffalo for 8th with that point.

In the West:

Big win for the Kings in Detroit, now tied for 7th with 79 points. Calgary was the big mover with a shootout win in Dallas, but the Stars are now a point back of the Flames. Anaheim now tied with Minnesota for 9th after beating the Rangers.

On Thursday: Buffalo visits the Bruins, Toronto hosts the sliding Flyers, Canadiens go to St. Louis (who are still sort of in this thing), Minnesota and Nashville in a massive game, Calgary goes to Phoenix in a "just as large" game, and Vancouver and San Jose battle atop the West.

BS because you're a Hawks fan. That was a good goal.

Both St. Louis and the puck stopped completely. Not a good goal

LOL. St. Louis did not stop and the puck is still moving, albeit barely.

The puck stops, dude. At the :06 mark when he gets it to his backhand, it's stopped.

Go to the last view. Starts at 51 seconds. The puck is still moving, very slightly but still moving.

So, even if the puck is still moving slightly, it's moving backwards, away from the goal, which is against the shootout rules which state the puck always has to be moving forward. So, it's still illegal since it's moving backwards.

Never said it wasn't moving backwards, just said it was moving. ;)

I think the shootout rules are bogus. :)

I think the shootout overall is bogus, thought that before last night. At least have two 5-minute overtimes before the shootout.

I think it should be a 5 man shootout. I don't think 3 guys is enough to determine a game. I would also like two 5 minute overtimes. The first one is 4 on 4, the second is 3 on 3 except on a penalty it would be 4 on 3.

Craziest game of the night was in San Jose with the Canucks winning in a shootout, with the teams trading goals with each other in the final five minutes. But the Coyotes were the big winners, shutting out Calgary and leaping to 5th. Nashville is now the "last team out" after beating Minnesota.

Big win for the Sabres in Boston puts Buffalo in 7th, the Rangers slide to 8th (begin talks about the inevitable Rangers collapse NOW!)
