Young Player Development - Course Catalog

Post#1 » by StocktonShorts » Wed Mar 9, 2011 9:33 pm

I think we all agree that the future of this team is tied to how well the young guys develop, whether it's Gordon Hayward and Derrick Favors or the upcoming draft picks.

Having said that I'd like to see the Jazz brass invest in some additional personnel to work with these guys. I'd like to see someone (or multiple someones) whose primary responsibility is player development.

The Jazz can't afford to let these guys fail.

I think that's a fairly obvious decision to make. If they don't bring in a big man coach for Favors, the fans have a legit reason to go ****. Still, this team has never had a real big guy. Not a young one capable of becoming a dominant scorer/rebounder/shot blocker like Derrick can be, so it will be interesting seeing how they try to bring him along. At the same time, though, we don't want to assume that extra coaches means extra chance for success. Some times less is more. Its hard because we as fans don't know what's going on behind closed doors. I do believe, though, that a big man coach is a must. Every team who has ever had a young stud big man has brought one in. I want to see that happen.

This is kind of interesting thread.

I'm surprised that fans don't know that pro players have all these things. The Jazz don't necessarily pay for them, but each player has a list of off season things they need to work on and develop.

Most NBA players, except the real minimum level players, have nutritionists, personnel trainers, position coaches and other NBA players that workout with them during the off season. Some of the younger players go to places like St. Vincent's for a few weeks.

There are several of these training centers that can handle pro athlete's. There are plenty of opportunities for pro basketball players to develop during the off season. Most pro players look at it as an 11 month a year job. Only the lazy knuckle heads with bad attitudes, and there are some, fail to train during the off season.

All of the top Jazz players look like they've got options for all of this so there's no concerns. I would be surprised if the young guys came back at the same level they're at now!

My favorite class! Man, could that guy make an entry pass. Helped that he was one of the best shooters of his generation too.

I'm pretty sure he meant having guys that work with them in-season.

I'd like to see the TEAM directing it, during the season and off-season. I think assuming that these guys are professionals and they'll do what's best for their own career independent of any direction from the team is faulty.

I think baseball and soccer have huge advantages over the NBA in player development. An organization can bring along a young player, keep him in the organization, monitor his development while giving him lots of playing time for a lower-division team.

The NBA is closer to that now with the NBDL, but the major difference is that there's such a loose tie between NBDL teams the their NBA affiliates that the NBA team can't really oversee their players' development. The NBDL is really nothing more than limbo where a second round pick will go for a couple games to get some playing time.

Here's a link that will explain off season training in clear terms.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=Locker/

Players have contracts, the league and the CBA specify what teams can and can't do. It's complicated. A team can't be involved with a player 12 months a year.

Thanks for the link.

I'm a big fan of Coach Thorpe; we need to send Hayward and Favors his way this offseason.

I want that class so bad. But not as bad as:

Man they were brutal on Giricek out there. LeBron travels out there far more than Giri ever did, but they always called him on it.

Giri to reporters: "That was a crab step. It's a good basketball play."
