Veteran Spurs forward-center Antonio McDyess and his team celebrated his 1,000th game Thursday at the end of the Spurs’ short practice.

McDyess and his teammates cut a giant cake after the practice finished up. He became only the 97th player in the history of the league to play in 1,000 games.

The magnitude of McDyess’ achievement was impressive to his teammates, particularly because he missed most of two seasons with knee injuries.

“When you get to something like that it’s about perseverance. It’s not always easy. It’s not always smooth,” Spurs forward Richard Jefferson said. ”There will be some years when you make the playoffs. Others when you don’t make the playoffs. 1,000 games is a major accomplishment.”

McDyess is one of the most popular players on the team. Even after he took DeJuan Blair’s position in the starting lineup Wednesday night, Blair greeted him with a huge bearhug after he was introduced on the court.

Honestly considering all the injuries he's had over his career I would of never expected him to reach this milestone, but last night against the Pistons he did it and Pops gave him the start to celebrate the moment.

Congrats to one of the last true class acts in the league.

Many, including McDyess himself at some point, thought he was done years ago after all the surgeries and wear and tear, but he's still going strong. I love what he brings to the team, and hope we can reward that effort with a ring or two.
