So am I the only one currently working out that isn't doing this P90X stuff?

There are a lot of great ways to work out. Whatever works for you. Some are motivated by joining a gym and working out with others. Some want the convenience of working out at home. I like working out at home.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I started out with P90X and wasn't a big fan of it.

I ride a stationary bike 4-5 days a week and I do pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, chin-ups and tricep dips 3-4 times a week as well. That seems to be working out pretty well.

I was on it for a while but just am too busy to do it 6 days a week and really stick with it. I've joined a gym close to my house (like 3 three minute drive) and just kind of mix it up. I just started this one (3 days per week):

http://toughmudder.com/training-prep/

It's kind of more strength + endurance based. Play basketball 2 days a week for more cardio.

One thing I have noticed is that being in shape and being in basketball shape are two TOTALLY different things.

I took about 3-4 months off of basketball because I had a lot of little injuries that were really messing with me. I had some knee pain, some back pain, I had fractured a finger, I was having shoulder problems, etc.

So I was doing a ton of non-basketball cardio. Riding the bike, doing the P90X cardio stuff, did a few Insanity workouts and stuff like that.

I came back to basketball about two months ago. I thought I was in good shape because I was rarely tired and I could breeze through the stuff like P90X plyo and stuff like that. Yeah, after my first game up to 11 I was **** gassed.

Basketball is really a great workout. :D

yeah, you get on an elliptical and go hard for 2 hours everyday but still be exhausted after an hour of basketball.

indoor soccer though, if you can play an entire game of indoor soccer, you can play basketball for probably 2 1/2 to 3 hours and be ok at the end. nothing has ever been better for my stamina than that.

Basketball is the best cardio workout there is, IMO. You get to change speeds, cut, run all out for portions, fight through screens, jump, etc. Basketball shape is a whole different level from regular cardio shape.

I'm still playing with the idea of amateur boxing. I had an old Rocky style coach for a few months but I think I'm banished for taking 3 months off for my baby. I've started going once a week to a class which is pretty lame but it's good cardio. I'm going to start full sparring at a new place this week to see if I've got what it takes. For the most part though I train at home. I built a garage and turned it into a gym. Lots of weighted pullups, dips, some dumbell stuff, heavy bag work, skipping and burpees. I've lost 6kg (13?pounds) of fat which is a little hard for people to get because I'm a relatively slim build to begin with but I feel great.

Jerrod, I agree soccer is insanely good for your cardio. I don't play it, but I play basketball against some guys who play soccer a lot... They can run at full speed and it seems like they never slow down after a 2-3 hour period. It's crazy.

I agree with Luke that basketball is probably the best though. Just because it's not only cardio, but you do a lot of jumping and movement that isn't just straight ahead running.

AussieBuck, I was also thinking about doing amateur boxing. A friend of mine used to do it in college... I don't actually want to fight or spar or anything, because I would get pwned. But the training itself seems like it would be a lot of fun and get you in amazing shape.

It's actually not near as bad as you'd imagine. I always hated even getting friendly slaps across the head but it's really not that bad boxing after your first go. Plus IIRC you're a lanky guy like me so all you need is to develop a good jab and you're half way there!

there's a ton of side to side and backpedaling movement in soccer, what there isn't though is much upper body (unless you're one of those people that prefer to shove someone out of the way before you jump for a header).

i too have thought about boxing but the thought of even a small chance of getting my nose broken scares the crap out of me for some reason

Same. I broke my nose once as a kid and will never forget it.

Getting punched right in the face doesn't help when I have the fear of breaking my nose. :P

With a run of 50+ degree days over the next week, most of the snow should be gone soon and I'm anxiously awaiting the courses opening up. This year I'm getting a membership at Wild Ridge for the first time. It's a nasty bitch to play if you walk, and 18 holes will leave you wiped. It's tough to believe, but the length and elevation is brutal. Gonna be playing every day I'm not playing baseball or volleyball.

Aussie Rules ftw - continuous, changing direction like soccer, and getting up off the ground every minute

Yeah,

Walking courses as opposed to riding them is definitely something I am going to be doing this year as well. Saves money + Gets you in shape. :D

It's a great workout no doubt, but soccer and hockey are more demanding. Hockey especially, there's no time to rest when you're out on the ice. That's why the shifts are so brief.

i still think that an indoor soccer game when you ignore the people yelling at you from the bench to sub out is the best workout :)

I'm not sure I agree re: basketball being the best cardio workout, since I play it and I'm unfit as ****.

Rugby league is retardedly hard fitness wise, especially defensively because everytime someone is tackled you have to run 10 metres backwards. Like for example against South Sydney on Friday the Roosters as a team made 230 tackles and missed 31. Considering for each of those tackles every player on the field had to run back 10 metres (sometimes a bit more depending on the referee) on every tackle that's 2.6 kilometers running backwards (not turning and running, literally running backwards lol) just on the defensive side of things. AFL is also ridiculous in the amount of running guys do. Rugby union is easy though because on defense you only have to get back behind the ball, so instead of running back 10 metres after every tackle you're running back like 1 lol.

Correct, if were talking pure cardio then something continuous is better. Obviously basketball is still very good for functional athleticism with the explosive movements, but you aren't constantly moving and you are getting bursts of recovery here and there.
