Jays claim LHP Cabral

Post#1 » by mikero » Sun Mar 13, 2011 4:30 pm

Looks like AA added another reliever. Maybe Farrell saw something in this kid from his time in Boston:
The Toronto Blue Jays claimed left-hander Cesar Cabral on waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

Cabral, 22, has made three relief appearances this spring for the Rays, posting a 4.91 ERA over 3 2/3 innings. The six-foot-three, 175-pound pitcher was selected by Tampa Bay in the 2010 Rule 5 Draft from the Boston Red Sox.

In 2010 he combined to post a 4-0 record with a 3.63 ERA in 45 appearances between Boston's single-A affiliates in Greenville and Salem.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Jays placed right-hander Dustin McGowan on the 60-day disabled list.

Blue Jays manager John Farrell said the team will try to work out a trade with the Red Sox for Cesar Cabral, who they claimed off waivers Saturday.

Cabral was taken by the Rays in the Rule 5 draft, so if he doesn't stick on the 25-man roster, he'll have to be offered back to his original team. Unless, of course, a trade can be agreed to, which is what Toronto is apparently trying to work out. Farrell said that if a deal can't be agreed upon, the lefty will likely go back on waivers. No the Jays are trying to work out a deal with Boston where they (the Jays) can keep Cabral and send him down to the minors, not trade him away.

Cabral was picked up by the Rays in the Rule 5 draft (from Boston), so he either has to stay on a team's 25-man roster for a year or be sent back to Boston. Tampa waived him, and AA claimed him. So the Jays now have to either keep him on the 25-man roster or place him on waivers like Tampa did. Now AA is trying to work out a deal with Boston where Toronto can keep him and send him down (probably to A+). If it doesn't work, then they put him back on waivers.
