Turkish Lab Retracts Doping Claim (Modafinil)

Post#1 » by Gurgals » Wed Mar 16, 2011 10:05 am

Personally I don't even know why Modafinil is banned. It improves cognitive function, and memory, and helps with sleep-disorders, nothing to do with physicality/endurance.

I've been taking this drug for study purposes in university for the past few month and its absolutely great, helps you focus a lot. I supposed the nba is afraid their players will become too smart pertaining to CBA negotiations, get'er done Fisher

Any other Modafinil users in the raps forum? its also called: Allertec,Provigil, and Modalert (depending on the manufacture)

She's considered one of the best women basketball players in history.

Taurasi's basketball career was halted, after a lab reported she had tested positive for the stimulant modafinil. She had been tested after a Nov. 12 game. The news of the test result, she said, left her in complete shock.

Thus began a nightmare, which included her Turkish club Fenerbahce ending her contract and the possibility of an extended playing ban.

However, Taurasi was fully exonerated this week. The lab in Ankara, Turkey, retracted its report and now could be in very serious legal difficulties, as it appears mistakes were made with the samples of Taurasi and other athletes who have since had provisional bans lifted.

In a teleconference with reporters, Taurasi talked with gratitude about the support she had received from family, friends, teammates and fans. She sounded relieved at the vindication from charges that could have cost -- among other things -- her cherished Team USA eligibility for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Again, this was an athlete who has been so committed to the national team that she didn't ask for even a day to celebrate her last NCAA title before joining her USA teammates for practice.

Taurasi was absolutely certain she had not taken modafinil, either intentionally or inadvertently. But she also knew it was going to be a battle to prove her innocence.

"I feel like the facts came out, and it's like I said from day one: It's a road I never crossed," she said in a teleconference Thursday. "The whole situation was handled poorly -- from information leaking early to due process not being held the right way. The lab and all the things that we were wary of from the beginning were determining factors.

"I've worked tremendously hard on the basketball court to be where I'm at, and for this to be put on me, it's not fair."

According to wiki,

Modafinil has been shown to prolong exercise time to exhaustion while performing at 85% of VO2max and also reduces the perception of effort required to maintain this threshold.[40] Modafinil was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency "Prohibited List" in 2004 as a prohibited stimulant

So it seems to dampen your perception of fatigue and effort required to maintain pace. Definitely a stimulant. Not sure how dangerous it is. The fact that they are doing studies on it and you are the guinea pig, means they do not know either.

What would worry me, is that the body tries to maintain homeostasis (a very crucial concept in physiology). What this means is that while the temperature outside is freezing your internal temperature is stable. When people try to introduce chemicals into their system, it throws off this stability and the body looks to return you to a normal state as best as it can.

For a fat person, this means that loosing 30 pounds fast, will trigger a critical awareness in your cells "OH MY GOD I AM STARVING" and the body will try to convert a higher proportion of food into energy to compensate for what it has lost. This is why those who starve themselves and diet, eventually just teach their bodies to become more efficient at metabolizing the food they eat. (the only way to do it is to eat healthy, regular and control portion size)

This may also be the reason why those who do not cycle on tester one have so little production of their own. Maybe if you keep using this stuff for an extended duration, you will find it harder to focus without it.

So keep that in mind. Drugs are fun, but none of us were born needing them.

Glad she was exonerated.

Although different mechanistically from things like caffeine and Ritalin, modafinil is still essentially a stimulant.
