And don't even try to tell me it's the players breaking plays. In the huddle late in the 4th quarter when all the Heat was doing was forcing 1 on 1 (or 1 on many) action instead of moving the ball and setting screens, Spoelstra tells his players to "stay with it".

Stay with what ? With **** that was proven it doesn't work ?

I don't know if the broadcast's intentionally give us vanilla stuff from the huddle because there is an agreement that nothing strategic can actually be shown, but it is really absurd some of the stuff that the coaches say during timeouts. Last night, Scott Brooks managed to make Spo look like Red Auerbach when he told the Thunder something along the lines of "we have to stop them from scoring, okay? Let's do that and then get some baskets on the other end." Really? Let's stop them from scoring. This needs to be said? The best part was that right after they showed that clip, Hubie Brown comes back and says "He's exactly right." Of course he's right. My two year old knows that the goal is to stop the other team from scoring. Every time I hear one of these ridiculous timeout words of wisdom, I am more convinced that most of us would be capable of coaching in the NBA.

maybe, just maybe, he was referring to the very fact that you don't want to hear .. that the players were breaking off from set plays too early? "Stay with the <play>" actually makes the most sense .. God .. I just wish this one and the other Spo is God thread would just die!

and maybe the earth is flat.

if you wanna say "stay with the play", you say "stay with the play". when you say "stay with it", it means "keep doing what you're doing", and the tone of his voice and the rest of what he said made it clear that this is what he meant.

and if you don't like these 2 threads, why the hell are you posting in them ???
go read and post in some threads you like.

and why don't you just GTFO .. I'll read and post where I want. Did I ask you not to post on here ??

i'm not the one whining about threads not dying - on the very same threads, thus not even giving them a chance to die.
i don't know if you realize, but that is either hypocritical or dumb.

Started the game nice with a back screen for a Lebron alley oop, completely ignore screens in the 2nd half. As soon as OKC started crowding the paint (just like the Celtics and Bulls did), Miami's offense stagnated.

This is Spoelstra, and he's hit a wall 50+ games ago. He's in the same place but he's sure he's moving forward.

(If anyone can find an animated GIF of a wind up toy facing a wall, it would be even better)

Thanks for posting this. It is exactly what I was thinking while I watched the game. The low post setups for Bosh and Wade and Bron disappeared for the most part in the second half. The Heat have little or no plays designed to get their players open off curls/screens like the celts do for Pierce/Ray and Thunder do for Durant.

I am pretty much tired of watching the Heat play hero ball under Spo. for the last three years. I actually like Spo. (hard worker, young, go-getter, minority) but realize he just will not get it done anytime soon. I also liked Randy Shannon but decided he had to go as well when he could not get it done. It boggles my mind that people back Spo. so adamantly when he has done absolutely nothing to warrant such support or loyalty other then be lucky enough to coach a team with stud player(s) and win just enough games to seem semi-competent.... No one will kill Spo. for winning 50+ games this year but with Wade, Bron and Bosh coupled with the load of shooters on the roster the Heat should be substantially better right now.

His job is basically riding on these playoffs. If we flop, he's as good as gone. If we make it to the Finals, like it or not, he'll probably be around for at least another 3 years guaranteed.

The Heat have already figured it out. We already won. These games are for show and Spo is just trying out different rosters and adjustments before the playoff start. I am not a Spo supporter but I think I see a glimpse of whats to come. We are the trojan horse of the league. After the championship this year I dont want any of the same bull next year. I want to break every positive single season team record there is. See you at the trophy presentation.

Terrific stuff from Kevin Arnovitz of ESPN. Can we hire him as coach?

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/miamiheat/post/_/id/5364/the-rare-wade-james-pick-and-roll-sighting

Nearly everyone had something to say last summer when LeBron James opted to join forces with Dwyane Wade in Miami, but no one had a satisfying answer to of the most compelling basketball question:

How do you defend a Dwyane Wade-LeBron James pick-and-roll?

There's no easy answer, which is why it's been surprising the Heat haven't challenged their opponents more aggressively this season to confront that proposition.

The Heat currently have the Eastern Conference's most efficient offense and they'll throw some clever stuff at you in the half court, but there's been a nagging sense all season that we haven't really seen their true offensive showpieces.

Yet, lost amid everything swirling around the Heat following their home loss to Chicago nearly two weeks ago was a wrinkle that surfaced in Miami's offense during the final eight minutes. On four separate occasions down the stretch, James set ball screens for Wade on the left side of the floor -- and the Heat scored buckets on three of those four possessions, totaling seven points (a third of their total fourth quarter output).

If we win it all and Spo says "see, all part of the plan" I will demand a paper trail to back him up. This guy continues to skate around accountability by giving us "dog ate my homework" excuses.

Spare me your hyperbole. This has only BECOME my "agenda" since it became clear to me that this guy will never evolve as a coach to the point we need him to. He's not the only one to blame for our struggles, but he is the biggest culprit, and he would be the most simple problem to correct.

I think the better question is, why do you defend him so passionately? What do you care if he stays or goes, aren't you a HEAT fan first and foremost? This team has a ridiculous amount of talent, and while there are obviously weaknesses on the roster it is not necessary to have an advantage at every position to win a title, or at least to avoid repeating the same embarrassing mistakes week after week.

Do you really think Spo is the best we can do? Under what conditions would you want Spo to leave? The buck has to stop somewhere, and personally I've always felt that somewhere should be with the coach. Part of the job description, ideally.

I gave him 2.5 years of patience, but we're in win-now mode. I think he's smart and has a great work ethic, but being a head coach also requires qualities like creativity, nimble thinking, and leadership, all of which he lacks in sufficient quantity.

Did they lock the "trade Beasley" threads after Riley shot down those rumors? Did they reopen those threads after Beasley was traded within two weeks?

Well, my point is we DON'T know that... and a thread where fans can vent about and discuss the coach is more than appropriate in this forum. HIF has a thread defending Spo that should also continue to exist.

These are substantive concerns, I could understand if the talk wasn't about basketball, but that's the entirety of the debates revolving around Spo.

If this thread gets locked. You'll just have more popping up. It's best to keep everyone posting their thoughts in here. Also, just because it's too late to get rid of Spo this season. It doesn't mean we can't comment on why we think he should be gone. It's a good thread to vent in If nothing else. I think it should be a sticky.

So let me ask the people who want Spoelstra fired this: what does he have to do to make you not want him fired?

For me its advance to the ECF's and at the least make it a 6 game competitive series this year.

The Heat have the talent to be able to at least make it a series in the ECF's. If they are beaten in 5 games, or blown out in a couple of their losses in the ECF's in 6 games I say fire him.

If they lose to any opponent in the semi-finals, fire him. (unless a major injury occurs)
If they lose to the 76ers in the first round, fire him.
If they lose to the Knicks in the first round, burn his house down.
If they lose to the Mavs in the finals...wait who are we kidding, the Mavs are never going there again .

If they lose to the Lakers in the finals, keep him, even if they're swept. A finals appearance is something this franchise can definitely hold their heads high about and build on next season. As would a competitive ECF series. Anything less though, I say it's time for Spo to go.

Return to Miami Heat
