Marcum leaves game with shoulder tightness

Post#1 » by SharoneWright » Fri Mar 18, 2011 4:20 am

•Brewers right-hander Shaun Marcum, acquired from the Blue Jays in an offseason trade, exited his Cactus League start due to shoulder tightness, tweets Buster Olney of ESPN.com. Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke acknowledged feeling concerned about the righty, and Olney described the potential situation as "not good." The Brewers have already lost ace Zack Greinke for a few starts after he suffered broken ribs in a pickup basketball game, and a potential injury to Marcum, though only speculation now, would be a major blow for a team expected to be in the thick of the NL Central race. Marcum, 29, missed all of 2009 with Toronto following Tommy John surgery in late 2008.

I'd like to see both Sean and the Brewers succeed. This has me nervous.

I don't know the extent of the injury, but I recall some people on this board foretelling Marcum's downfall due to his delivery issues and I think it was Schad that specifically pointed out his shoulders becoming the main problem. This really scares me because despite trading him away, I can't help but root for the guy.

He'll be fine. He's a tough cookie. But this is all OT to us now.

He's also a pitcher with a shoulder injury, which means he probably won't be fine.

It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Yeah a shoulder problem is not good news for Marcum, depending on the severity of it. With pitchers, usually an elbow problem is easier to recover from, while shoulder problems (if they eventually lead to surgery) can be career threatening. Hopefully it is just a minor setback and Marcum is pitching again soon.

It looks like some people were right about Shaun's arm being a big question mark moving forward (inverted W, etc). Maybe he was worked too hard last season coming back from TJS. Marcum's biggest issue was always durability as I never saw an issue with his performance and outside of TJS in 2008 he did not have any major injuries (to my knowledge), but this is definitely not good news for him or the Brewers.

"If this were the regular season, especially August, September, I'd pitch through it and wouldn't say a word," Marcum said.

Ofcourse it's never good news to hear of any sort of arm trouble with a pitcher, but let's not blow this out of proportion before we really see the fall out. It's not terriably uncommon for guys, especially pitchers, to have some soreness and tightness in the pre-season. By the sounds of it, atleast on the surface, it doesn't appear as anything more than a little stiffness.

Marcum said the tightness was not a big problem, and it’s been bugging him for most of the spring. But Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke said Marcum’s neck had bothered him the last couple days and he could have been over-compensating for it on the mound.

Yeah, just some preseason stiffness. He'll get them 15+ wins and do his job. Definitely an ex-Jay I'll cheer for.

I think the logical next step after the designated hitter rule is just to have pitching machines out on the mound. It's too nerve wracking for the fans to watch their teams to invest so much into these guys, and then injury can strike at any time. There were some things the human body was just not meant to do.

The human "pitcher" would stand behind the machine pushing the fastball, curveball, offspeed buttons. He could still field bunts, keep the runner on first honest, etc.

Hmm, imagine if fans at home could pay to vote for what pitch the throw....

Plus umpires could be eliminates with a holographic strike zone and censors in balls, shoes, bases, the plate etc.

The fact that shoulder stiffness has been a regular occurrence for him is pretty worrisome; it suggests that his mechanics (primarily, the way he pinches his shoulders together) are putting a fair bit of stress on the muscles, which often means that they are putting stress on the joint and cartilage as well.
