Could Rick Adelman become Lakers next head coach?

Post#1 » by WCDYNASTY » Sat Mar 19, 2011 7:09 am

I read an article on CNNSI's FanNation.com (which I will post below) that states that Rick Adelman inevitably will be leaving the Rockets after his contract expires at the end of this season. I'm wondering if he could be next Lakers coach... why? Well for starters Phil Jackson seems to be retiring after the season is over, Rick won't be Rockets coach anymore, Rick is an excellent coach with proven record, Rick is from Lynwood - California, went to high school in Downey - California, and I don't think Kobe necessarily wants to have a rookie coach (Brian Shaw) next season... with that being said I could see this happen. But honestly I'd rather have Brian Shaw coaching the Lakers next season if he maintains the Triangle Offense the Lakers are used to playing, wouldn't want Lakers having trouble learning a new offense/defense.

ADELMAN UNLIKELY TO RETURN TO HOUSTON

The Rockets and coach Rick Adelman may be heading toward an amicable divorce. No name-calling, lawsuits or custody battles. The Rockets should be awarded sole custody of Hasheem Thabeet. Adelman won't even ask for visitation rights. This will be a no-fault split. No alimony, no hard feelings. This isn't the War of the Roses. This is a relationship that has run its course. There is an outside chance Adelman and the Rockets will stay together ... for the kids' sake. But don't count on it. They are breaking up, so why won't they just get on with it? In a way, Adelman and the Rockets are like a couple headed toward the inevitable, but neither wants to be the first to say, "Let's end this."

I imagine he'd be a candidate, but Kobe would have to sign off on him. I think triangle still needs to be implemented. This team is built for Triangle, I don't see many options after that.

I could imagine, with this team, a fresh coach and a fresh offence might result in an improvement.

No matter what coach takes over, the triangle will stay on for the most part. The team is simply too old, too accomplished and too winning to change the system entirely. There will be minor changes but a complete overhaul is nothing short of suicide.

I know a lot of people here like Shaw a lot but I am not convinced that he is the guy that can take this team to promiseland. This team has too much star power, ego and personality for a rookie coach. It takes a coach who's been around the block a few times before to have the credibility to make everyone listen. If we look at what happened this season, could a rookie coach really handle the ups and downs we've been through without problems? Hell, the players probably would've lost patience with him a couple of months ago. Whether they like to hear it or not, guys like Kobe, Fisher, Artest and Gasol are not that easy to coach.

everyone will be a candidate.......including all of us!

With that said sure there are going to be many many names rumored to be likely successors to PJ but in the end i think it's really a short list of names that have already been thrown around here on this board.

HELL.......TO THE NO. This guy has never won big time, has more failures than success. I'm willing to take a chance on a young up and coming coach than a retread like Rick. Hell no....hell no not him.

Rick Adelman is washed up from his Sacramento days. Brian Shaw or Kurt Rambis. I wouldn't even mind Chuck Person because of his defense.

This. Give Shaw a shot, he's been on standby for almost 10 years now.

He's a good coach, but I can't see him going to LA after the Kings-Lakers rivalry. I'd think he'd want to beat them if anything. I'd like to see him coach the Knicks.

PERSONALLY, i think he would prevail with the team we have here....he was great with the kings, as some do think that 2002 playoffs were fixed...gasol/odom/bynum and webber/divac/pollard seem like they can fit similar roles...then you have kobe and artest ofcourse, to the flip sided bibby and christie...very similar line up, and i could see LA doing a "different" type of damage. i say YES.

"Could" is too broad of a word. Of course anyone "could".

I'm sure they'll consider any and everyone-- it's pretty much Kobe's call at this point.

More failure than success? There's always been a better team in the way. Btw take a look at the Rockets' record right now and look at their roster. There's no way that team should be above .500 and they are.

I don't think Adelman is getting the respect his deserves in this thread. The guy is a winner, plain and simple. Even with the scraps in Houston he's still finding a way to propel the team to an above .500 record and into the playoffs. I would love for either Adelman or Chuck to take the reigns after PJax leaves, but let's be honest here it'll probably be Shaw that ends up as our HC, unfortunately. And what's all this talk about Kobe deciding who our future coach is? I'm sure the F.O. would take into consideration whatever little imput Kobe has, and he'll probably say Shaw, but this decision shouldn't just come down to whatever Kobe says because of course he's going to try and protect a friend. Idc if he is #24 Kobe Bean Bryant our new head coach needs to be one that can put us in the best position to win, not just because of him having a personal relationship with Kobe.

How many playoff series has he won ? I don't care who he's coaching or what players he's coached. I look beyond just records. I look at the intelligent aspects of coaching, can he motivate ? Is he calm during turbulent situations ? The handling of players and other factors are way more important to me than just what damn numbers he's throwing up. All the questions I've brought up is situations where I've seen him falter.

Adelman is at the end of the road as far as coaching.
