Hey guys, sorry for posting on this board in advance.
So im flying out to LA next week, and was wondering if you guys had a better idea of this whole Radiation thing. The news states that levels of radiation from Japans nuclear plants is minor, but I was just wondering whats your thoughts are on that? Maybe I am just a little parinoid here, but never been to LA, first time flying out there, and constantly reading about this stuff on the WSJ paper is getting to me. lol
P.S I am huge Lakers/knicks fan!!!!!
Lakers because when I came to the states at a young age and started watching bball, the only team i knew was the lakers and mostly because of countless arguments defending KOBE, whether it was Kobe vs Tmac, Kobe vs. AI, Kobe vs VC. Hopefully we win the Chip this year and threepeat!!!!!
Knicks, well grew up in new york, so just been threw hell the last ten years.
anyone going to the LAKERS-suns game? I will be there Tuesday.

Re: 0ff topic: Radiation
Unless you are flying directly over the reactors as they are "venting" or live within a few kilometers of the Daiichi plant, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Even if large amounts of radiation is released from the reactors via core meltdown and containment breach it will be diluted by the time it reaches the US. You are being exposed to background radiation as we speak, so the levels will be slightly higher but have no real effect.
Realize that the media is going to make "radiation" and "nuclear" sound as scary as possible because that's what gets the ratings, but they are leaving out all the crucial details and as a result are promoting unnecessary panic. People here in Austin are buying up iodine pills like there's no tomorrow, which is quite telling of how misinformed people in this country are. I can only imagine how much worse the fear and panic are on the West coast.
In short, no one outside of a few kilometers of the Daiichi plant needs to worry about radiation exposure. In fact, the real concern in Japan is the lack of food, clean water, and especially POWER. People are dying from hypothermia as a result of the power loss since the reactors were shut down.

Re: 0ff topic: Radiation
People should be more concerned with the radiation emanating from cellphones that are slapped on their face while driving on the 405.
No concerns here in SoCal. All readings are normal as of today.

Re: 0ff topic: Radiation
Experts say it's a really small window for the radiation to reach America.
Nonetheless, buy some iodine pills if your still worried.
Just make sure you you stay tuned to local news and take them if the levels of radiation has reached the coast of America and is at a very high level.
Iodine pills have a 48 hour shield of protection.

You don't need to worry, you'll be exposed to far more radiation just by taking that flight than anything that might make its way from Japan. Don't believe the hype.

Re: 0ff topic: Radiation
i think there is more radiation exposure if you get an xray done at the hospital than any US citizen in California is going to get from Japan.
