Jays tinker with pitching plans

The Blue Jays have altered their pitching plans for this week both to create a level playing field in the battle for their two remaining rotation spots and to deprive the division rival Tampa Bay Rays of getting too familiar with Brandon Morrow.

After Monday’s off-day, lefty Marc Rzepczynski will slip into Morrow’s scheduled start Tuesday in Port Charlotte against the Rays. The move is done, in part to let both Rzepczynski and Jesse Litsch start games rather than follow each other to the mound in the same game.

“We’ve split them up to give them equal opportunity to follow their pre-game routines. It is a competition, so we want to make sure they have an equal footing,” manager John Farrell said.

Instead of facing the Rays for the second consecutive start, Morrow will pitch Tuesday in a simulated game at the Jays minor-league complex.

“He’s been dealing with a little irritation in his non-throwing shoulder,” Farrell said. “This is a chance to work at a controlled pace but at the same time get him four innings and 65 pitches.”

The other reason is that, if he stayed on the same schedule, Morrow would have faced the Rays, a division rival, three times in a row and Farrell doesn’t want to give them that many looks at him.

Very good start today by from Zep and Mills was excellent coming out in relief of Purcey, Mills still has some options and I can see them starting to convert him to a middle BP guy. Next few starts will be key for Zep hopefully he can prove that hes is the guy to take the 5th spot so we can trade Reyes for something useful.

Skipper tips hand on rotation

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell gave a description of what he wants his rotation to look like, which sounded like SP Ricky Romero, Brandon Morrow, Brett Cecil, Jesse Litsch and Kyle Drabek, the Toronto Sun's Mike Rutsey reports. "To say who's one, who's two and three and so on, I don't know where we're at the point of designating those guys or are really ready to announce our opening day starter," Farrell said. "But at the same time you look to arrive at some kind of contrast of style, to split up the lefties that have effective changeups, yeah, you'd like to get some power in between those two. We'd also like to get a power arm in the five spot preceding Ricky the next time through, or whoever that might be."

I like Litch, this will be interesting to see how he does. I bet he surprises a lot of people.

Whats up with all of the hate for him and E5?

I don't get why people don't like Romero as our "ace". He was the one guy I had a lot of faith in whenever we had a game last year. If it wasn't for those two games before the All-Star break, he'd be huge.

Jays' Rzepczynski no longer a starting candidate

The final two spots in the Blue Jays rotation has become a three-horse race.

On Sunday, the field got whittled down by one when general manager Alex Anthopoulos announced that left-hander Marc Rzepczynski was no longer a starting candidate but now was in the race for a job in the bullpen.

The three survivors are rookie Kyle Drabek, Jesse Litsch and lefty Jo-Jo Reyes.

Litsch took a giant step in the right direction Sunday against the Twins, blanking them over 51/3 innings, with seven strike outs and no walks.

Impressive!

The news concerning Zep doesn’t come as any big surprise as others have thought his stuff to be more conducive to the bullpen than as a starter.

“We just feel that for what we need right now that we’re better off to have him compete for a spot in the ’pen,” Anthopoulos said of Rzepczynski. “We told him that to make this team his best chance at this point is to be in the pen at this time.”

The move may also have a lot to do with the questionable health of two veteran right-handers — Frank Francisco and Octavio Dotel.

Well guess thats it for my hope to see Zep succeed as a starter for now. I'm pretty sure we will now see Jo Jo start the season as the 5th guy with Drabek at AAA and then in July Reyes will ether be moved to the bullpen or flipped to another team depending on how effective Zep/Purcey/Carlson can be as the lefties in the pen. If they are stumbling I can see Reyes moving into that spot if they are doing fine then hopefully you can move Reyes for something useful.

Personally, I think it's the best place for Rzep right now. He's outgrown the minors almost assuredly and the rotation competition is crowded. He'll absolutely get a shot at some starts this year, 'cause he's the de facto 6th already with the club and there are always injuries. And in the meantime he gets to stay with the Jays and prove he's gonna stick in the bigs.
