Lowry and the 3 point shot

Post#1 » by Guy986 » Mon Mar 21, 2011 2:09 am

How does a career 26% 3 point shooter make such a drastic jump in one season? He's shooting 38% from 3 this year and a blistering 45% in the last 10 games. Lowry with a 3 point shot is such a dangerous player.

He certainly looks very confident launching his shots from deep. But do you think he's just "hot"?

there's a good thread about this on clutch boards. it says he was always a decent shooter, just that this is his first season he has freedom w/ his shots.

I'm talking strictly about his 3 point shot. He was always a poor 3 point shooting as evidenced by his pedistrian career 3point shooting percentage prior to this year.

Hard to believe how out of shape he looked at the start of the season.

he really took that starting position right out of brooks hands. he's making the rockets look like geniuses trading alston for him and keeping him and trading away brooks. the one major advantage brooks had over lowry was 3pt shooting and its no longer a concern for lowry.

What I'm seeing is really a confidence thing. When the shot clock is down or its a two for one situation he doesn't have to think (or worry about being yelled at or whatever) when he takes the shot....he has pure confidence. In regards to the last ten games....well he knows that this is his team to run now with aaron gone. He doesn't have to go out and be the anti-aaron brooks (he doesn't have to always look to pass). I've always heard he was one fo the best shooters in practice, but that it didn't transition....I'd like to think this is less about a hot streak and more about him relaxing...knowing this is his team ...his ship to steer...and that it's up to him to take over games. And to that note...Lowry has really turned into the engine/fire of the team....by will power/want/ or whatever you call it...the guy will drive into traffic...muscle out a board/strip/steal ...and now hit a big shot when we need it. I think you saw some of that fire in the new orleans game...him yelling when we were down...purposely going against the teams lathargicness (we played such a sluggish game). I was even mentally prepared for the loss that game and seeing Lowry so intense when it seemed like a predetermined rockets loss was very unexpected. He was always a huge spark off the bench...but he has matured into that for the entire team. I'm completely surprised and I'm sure the Rockets are too at just how great he's been playing....the guy must shoot 85% at the end of quarters, shotclocks, and 2 for 1's.

Also while I'm hopping on jocks...PPAT is a damn monster. The one thing Lowry will do on defense that annoys me is let his man get the step to the basket sometimes....with ppat in there it's a none issue, the guy has such a nose for the ball and has great timing to protect the rim. With Hill its ok more likely to be a foul do to lack of coordination(improving though), hayes won't be there b/c he'll be smartly boxing out his taller man on the opposite side...so it's a layup, and with scola/miller their so slow it's always a layup.

Most of those long 2-point jump shots in the NBA translate to college 3-pointers; and most guards in NCAA are capable of shooting the college three.

Lowry was not a good NBA 3-point shooter when he first entered the league. The numbers show that. You have to credit his hard work and his ability to adapt to Adelman's offense.

Yeah, I was arguing against the argument presented in that thread.

Thats what it comes down to. Same thing happen with derrick rose, he had no jump shot when he came in the league and look @ him now, if you're not a good shooter the only thing that can fix that is getting in the gym and shooting 100's of shots every day.

he has good shooting form
you can tell how he shoot free throw
he work on his 3pts shots over the summer
also now he's shooting mostly off the dribble (giving him some rhythm)
some people just not good as spot up shooter

That.

As a former "great practice player", I can testify to the power of confidence. When your coach gives you the go-ahead, all the neurosiis fade away...and you can just play ball.

John Stockton's 3 point percentages

First 5 years in the league:
51 made three pointers on 198 attempts (25.7%)

The remaining 14 years of his career:
794 made three pointers on 2,005 attempts (39.6%)
