Gaines re-signed through 2011-12
Smart to lock him up as a minimum guy now. I have to think Avery sees a lot of similarities between his own path and that of Gaines. Hopefully yata continues to develop into the same kind of player.

If it's for less then a mil per year then I'm fine with it.

Love the deal. He's been playing solid basketball and you have to assume he's only going to get better with some consistency.

This is the best signing that we've had (save Morrow) in a few years lol.

I'm sure it's probably close to the vet minimum. He's lucky to still be playing in the NBA and therefore he really doesn't have any bargaining chips. Even though he gets probably gets the minimum, he gives us a solid player. I think this move may just make Farmar more expendable if we need to deal him/shed salary.

Re: Gaines re-signed through 2011-12
I would really like to see the deal, I'm figuring it's for a touch above vet min.
Good, now ship Farmar out for more cap space along with Petro, then we can resign Hump and still go shopping.

Humphries? mehh.. I think at his absolute best, he would be the 1st big on a contender. Sort of have the same role Lamar Odom has, well not exactly like odom but you get my point.

Gaines deserves it. It's easier for us now to shop Farmar and get that needed cap space...

Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of quality big men like the Lakers do. Hump might be the answer for now if we a) can't get Nene or b) just need a relatively cheap guy to pair with Lopez/Howard.

I just don't want this team to make the mistake of signing him for more than 3 years, which I'm afraid we will.

While I can be wrong, I think Billy and Proky recognize that this is a crucial stage in the progression of the Nets. They consistently and constantly refer to the business side of the NBA and how it's easy to make a mistake that can set you back several years. The interesting thing this summer will be to see what they decide to do to improve the roster and try to keep D-Will a Net. I've tried to think of complicated deals and free agent acquisitions that we can do to drastically improve our team but there's nothing out there that really makes me feel like we can make a tremendous leap from our current state. Unless Denver doesn't want to spend money, I don't see them letting Nene go easily. IMO giving money to a 31yr D.West or injury-plagued T.Chandler would be a bad investment. And there are no great SFs out there to pick up. There aren't enough good players available like last year to go after. Unless we make a completely idiotic move, I'll give Billy the benefit of the doubt this offseason. The only way that we'll be great next season is if he pulls another D-Will-type trade that comes completely out of the blue.

I don't know if we'll see him back, if the CBA is similar I'm fully expecting him to get around 5 years and $40 million or so.
I would want him to come off the bench though and honestly, I'm quite wary of a guy that suddenly "gets it" in the most important contract year of his career.
He may not be cost effective, especially depending on who we draft and what other free agents or trades we explore.
So I guess, thinking about it now, maybe I wouldn't resign him lol.
I still want Tyson Chandler or Nene.
I so hope we luck out and land Danny Granger and then either trade for a guy like Mayo or sign Afflalo, even if we have to overpay him.
We need to buy as many 1st round picks as are available as well and a 2nd or two.
Billy needs to get creative.

Re: Gaines re-signed through 2011-12
C'mon guys, Hump's earned reasonable money from us. I don't think I have any doubts that he'll only get better from this point on, this year looks much more like a case of player finally figuring it out than it out does one overperforming in a contract year. Playing at the level he has been, there's no question he is a legitimate starting 4 in this league.
Brook's the guy that needs to go. Everyone got super high on him again during that 5 game winning streak because he was just super on, but his pussy attitude and overall stupidity are unacceptable, and these aren't things that are going to get better with time. If we can move him for a very talented wing, I'm up for overpaying Nene a bit. That's a beastly defensive front court, and damn solid offensively too. Then sign either Grant or Tayshaun to play the other wing position and we're very much in the mix to win the Atlantic.

You're going way overboard.
Typical overrating of your own player's syndrome.
Hump has been beastly on paper and his in game play is effective a lot of the time, but let's keep it in perspective that's he the starting 4 on a 22 win team with little to no competition for his minutes.
It's absurd to say Lopez needs to go because we have Humphries having a career season in the most important contract year of his career and said season being about 10 and 10 anyway on a lineup devoid of talent for the most part.
You can't throw out Lopez' entire body of work because he's only averaging 20 and 6 in a down year and because he isn't the alpha male Garnett club wielder you hoped for and then throw out 6 years of hot garbage play by MJ chucker mode Hump because he has somehow transformed himself in his 7th season on his 4th team in that time span...
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt to an extent, but I have to be realistic and take the context into perspective, it's only right.

Then how do you explain my opinion of Brook?

Hump has been beastly on paper and his in game play is effective a lot of the time, but let's keep it in perspective that's he the starting 4 on a 22 win team with little to no competition for his minutes.
What does it matter if there's competition for his minutes or not? There's no one on Orlando competing for Dwight Howard's minutes, do you hold that against him? My opinion of Hump is based on his performance on the court, not who he's had to beat out to earn those minutes, and this season, especially over the last month and a half or so, he's been a defensive, rebounding beast and a non-liability on offense AKA a solid NBA starter. I'm very confident this year's Kris Humphries could play 26-28 MPG on an excellent NBA team.
The Nets awful record is far more relevant (and attributable) to Brook Lopez than it is to Kris Humphries, who no one considers anything more than a good role player. Brook is this team's centerpiece, he's going to expect to be paid like a centerpiece after next season, and, most importantly, we still might be able to bring in a near centerpiece quality talent if we moved him. I've come to the firm conclusion that Brook will never be a great player, that he will in fact continue to go through long stretches where he isn't even a good player. His entire game is predicated upon his jumper being on and hitting difficult, contested shots in the post. If those things aren't happening, well, it's painful to watch.
It's absurd to say Lopez needs to go because we have Humphries having a career season in the most important contract year of his career and said season being about 10 and 10 anyway on a lineup devoid of talent for the most part.
The two points aren't contingent on one another, I'm not saying because Hump has been solid for us that Brook has become expendable. Brook should be moved because he could bring this team the dynamic wing that it needs, and this offseason two very solid centers happen to be hitting FA.

Gaines and the Nets can't catch a break lol.
Hopefully he'll be back strong next season.
Were details of his contract ever released?

Sad to hear he's out for the season. How has he done for you guys? I always liked him but he really hasn't made an impact in his short Wolves stint.
