The Jazz easily could have signed Wesley Mathews, and taken the financial hit for one year, and then gone back under the cap by re-signing Kirilenko at a much lower salary after this season.

That would have been the best basketball decision, but instead they made the economic decision not to take a $7 million hit this year to keep Mathews.[/quote]

Unfortunately in a small market basketball decisions are always made with financial implications mattering as much (if not more) than basketball implications.

Portland and Sacrament are small markets.

Sacramento has had one of the lowest payrolls in the league for several years now and is about to lose their team. Portland has been down during rebuilding and had a lower salary figure than the Jazz for several years in spite of having a "rich" owner.

Kind of kills the argument that the Jazz are cheap (top 5 in salary spending in spite of being a small market) or should be able to stay competitive without going through rebuilding periods. ;)

Problem with the Jazz is they didn't tank it when there was the time to tank it. Plain and simple.

Not really.

Do you think that Paul Allen specifically targets the Jazz's best RFAs, because he knows that they will have a hard time matching?

If you say no, the evidence speaks otherwise.

That being said, I think it adds an extra element of class if someone is able to accomplish something great, all the while doing it on a budget. So I don't think that the Jazz need to exceed the cap year after year, only when a special player like Wesley Mathews comes along.

I was also torn about Carlos Boozer. Seems unwise to give up two of your best three players, and not expect repurcussions.

Will the Jazz make $7 million less this year for missing the playoffs altogether?

Seems llike thay would make that in te first round. What if they miss the playoffs for the next 5 years?

Should that be considered a $35 million loss?

The Jazz make/made 1 million per home playoff game over the last few years so they would of needed to get to the 2nd round to take the 7million hit for Matthews but your forgetting to times that by 2 for luxery tax too right?

If the Millers were so worried about money they would of dumped AK for a luxury tax savings contract but they held on to him and are going to end up paying the tax again!
