Another +/- article, this one going back to how I came to have my beliefs about the stat, and explaining precisely it's value (or at least trying). Like a lot of these articles, it's quite long. Let me give you the gist of what I argue using an image I use in the post.



I'm saying PER type stats are good for reliability, but +/- stats are better for validity (when properly adjusted). A good analysis with good conclusions needs both reliability and validity, so using +/- in addition to other tools provides a benefit you really can't get with any other type of stat.

I'm familiar with the reliability/validity concepts but somehow never applied them to basketball stats. Surprised how smoothly that fits.

lol. I make those mistakes constantly. I remember once on RealGM talking about "Jerry West's broken knows". It's killer because even when I re-read, I don't catch it, because it still sounds right. Thanks for catching it though.
