POSSIBLE LINE-UP CHANGE!!!!

Phoenix Suns weighing starting lineup changes
by Paul Coro - Mar. 26, 2011 07:00 PM
The Arizona Republic

The Suns can't change how this season began with the wrong make-up and it appears too late to change an ending with no playoffs for the second time in three years.

But coach Alvin Gentry is open to changing how the final 11 games start.

After center Marcin Gortat had his broken nose reset Saturday and said he planned to play against Dallas on Sunday, Gentry said, "We'll have to try to look at what we'll do there as far as starting or not starting and then there's a couple of other positions we may have to look at and see."

Mickael Pietrus (quad tendon strain) did not practice Saturday but Vince Carter returned after missing Friday's second half with a stomach virus. But Gentry focused on another wing, Jared Dudley, the team's top 3-pointer shooter at 40.8 percent after a 17-point game Friday.

"Jared Dudley has played real well," Gentry said. "He's done a good job lately so we'll have to look at that situation and see what we want to do there."

Gentry said he planned to decide by Sunday morning about the lineup, which starts Robin Lopez and Carter at those positions now. Lopez played four first-half minutes Friday, getting four fouls and a technical foul. Gentry did not bring him back while Channing Frye played the entire second half. Lopez has started 55 of his 56 appearances this season but averages 16.1 minutes.

Carter's active string of 10 consecutive misses dropped him to 41.7 percent shooting with the Suns. He has started 907 of 915 career games and is expected to be available Sunday but Pietrus is questionable.

"I am contemplating a lineup change," Gentry said. "We just have to try to take a look and see where we're going to go from here.

"As far as the playoffs, we would have to win every game so we're still playing to win every game but I also have to look at combinations of guys I can stick out there, even at the start of the game."

Gortat broke his nose Friday night when he turned to run upcourt in the third quarter and smashed it into the back of Steve Nash's head. He said it bled for 15 minutes in the locker room and he was not cleared to return to the game, which the Suns lost with his absence hurting them.

"I don't see any reason why I shouldn't play," Gortat said. "If I'm going to have a big headache or if I'm going to get dizzy, that's the only case I wouldn't.

"It's better that it's my nose than my knee. In the worst case, I'm going to be out 48 hours, not six months."

He had the nose reset Saturday, opting to have it done without medication.

"It was my fault," he said. "I should take an injection. It was painful. I don't want to use bad words. I had dirty pants almost."

Gortat said he would play with his nose taped because he refuses to wear a mask, knowing another hit could require off-season surgery.

"I was playing with Dwight Howard and I was playing against Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal) and a lot of big guys in the league," Gortat said. "None of these guys hurt me that bad. All of a sudden, there's this one guy - 5-5 tall, maybe 5-5 and a half, 170-80 pounds who doesn't eat meat. The guy just broke my nose. It's funny."

Nash said he did not feel the collision. He might still be numb from going 1 for 9 from the field in a game the Suns badly needed to win.

"That put us in a really dark position but it's not over," Nash said. "We had a lot of adversity and I had a horrible game. A lot of things didn't go our way. It's been that type of year. We've just got to keep fighting until somebody says you're out of here.

"Physically, I wasn't horrible. My legs were really tired from the week but I just didn't have a good game. It was one of those nights where I wasn't there. I was fighting and fighting. I just couldn't find it."

Yeah. He's put too much faith in Carter's former ability to take over games and be the go-to guy next to Nash and I think that ultimately hurt our hunt for a playoff spot.

Gentry is a good coach. I like him and im not going to turn on him just because its time for the Suns to rebuild and he was givin an uneven roster to work with from day 1. So many people are fair weather fans it makes me sick... The Suns almost shocked the NBA last year when they went to the conference finals and gave the Lakers a good scare. But that was all the players doing right? So a teams success depends on its players and the coach gets no credit unless something goes wrong then hes the scapegoat.

IMO he is better than Porter who refused to be flexible. He is better than D'Antoni who refused to play his bench or coach defense. I think fans fall into the trap of thinking they know more than the coach which is laughable, at any givin moment there are probably numerous factors being weighed whether it comes from management or dealing with his players personal or professional issues. There is always more going on than what is seen on the surface. The team is positioning itself to enter a rebuilding phase so its gonna take a few years to reload and try again, if you cant deal with that then go watch hockey and jump on the Suns bandwagon when it starts moving again.

So basically by saying hes a terrible coach you are saying that the players, management and assistant coaches are all fools since they all love him. Think about it.

Gentry needs to go back to being an assistant coach. I love him and I think he's done wonders with what he's had to work with, but unfortunately it's all you can do. I give him credit for mentoring the young guys and building their confidence. I also give him credit for formulating an awesome bench last year.

Enough with the D'Antoni slamming though. D'Antoni got such a bad rap at defense but his teams were ALL better than Gentry's at defense. Look at the statistics to bear that out. Porter is not even involved in the discussion. Firing D'Antoni to bring in Porter and subsequently getting rid of all the defensive players (Marion/KT/Raja/Boris) was arguably the most dumbfounding thing I've had to endure in 17 years of watching my favorite teams in any sport.

Gentry's rotations and actions cost us Game 6 of the WCF we (players AND coaches) worked so hard to get to. It was pretty much inexcusable. Instead of it being a one-off, his shoddy management of rotations and recognizing situations cost us way too often this year. His limitations became too evident, and they're shown again. It's too late to shift around the lineups, man. Too, too late.

I'm definitely waiting for Coach Thunder Dan, whether its this offseason or a couple years from now.

Although Alvin's coaching has disappointed me MANY times this season, I still trust him. However, I want to see changes in his lineup and substitution from here on out.
Here are his problems:

1) Overplays Nash. Aaron Brooks is a high scoring caliber, quick point-guard that can push the ball and get our scoreboard lit up. Neither of them play well defense, and both are responsible for putting a lot of points on the scoreboard, wether it be assists or scoring themselves. Nash needs rest, Brooks is capable of being his trustable backup.

2) Underplaying Childress. Vince, in all honesty, sucks. Yes, he should get some play time here and there. However, the majority of the playing time should go to Childress. The only thing Vince does now is shoot for us, but Dudley and Pietris are tremendously better shooters than him, plus, Childress can rebound and play better defense than Carter who seems not to give an ish. We need Childress for that, and Vince is just a waste of time on the floor, and we all know it.

3) Time management with Gortat/Frye. I think Gortat should play alongside with Warrick; Frye should play alongside of Lopez. If we play them both together, then taking them both out would resort to putting Lopez and Warrick together, thus making our post completely vulnerable. That's why I agree that Nash and Frye should start together (so Frye gets more looks at the three), alongside Lopez, then bring Gortat off the bench so there's some balance.

This should be our main lineup:

Nash (27 min) / Brooks (21 min)
Dudley (28 min) / Childress (20 min)... If neither are playing well, put Carter in
Hill (27 min) / Pietris (21 min)... If neither are playing well, put Carter in
Frye (35 min) / Warrick (12 min)
Lopez (12 min) / Gortat (35 min)

I'd be excited to see how a lineup change would affect the way that everyone plays. How Lopez would do with the bench unit and no Nash, how much better our starters would perform, how Vince would react to coming off the bench, how consistent Dudley could be as our starting SG...

Playoffs or no playoffs, if we were to put this lineup change in effect and the Suns started doing well, you'd have to be pretty excited about our future with guys like Gortat, Dudley and Frye.

Start Dudley/Gortat. More minutes for Brooks/Pietrus, less for Carter/Rolo

Start Dudley, Gortat and Frye.....next season. Start the Suns dancers the last 10 games so we can move up a slot or 2 in the draft.

Lets be honest we have a lot of frustrated fans and rightfully so. Amare leaves, they sign a group of wings in his place and Hedo just couldnt fit in at all. I'm suprised the Suns are even in the playoff race at all. The fact that Frye really stepped up this year and Hill played great D every single night is a testament to our chemistry and character on this team. I loved the Gortat trade (as everyone should by this point) JRich was looking for a large payday after his expiring and EC wasnt showing anything. So we basically got one of the best centers in Suns history (he will be mark my words) for Hedo - a wing role player who was on a rediculous contract and just didnt fit in. I consider JRich for Wince a swap since neither are going to resign. Then we used the pick we got as leverage to get Brooks and just barely lost enough games to avoid losing our pick instead.

Gentry isnt perfect but i honestly think people hang a bit too much of the blame on his shoulders; in my opinion he has done great this and last year considering the hands he has had dealt to him.

I dunno where some of you are gettin the assumption that Rich wouldn't have resigned. He was in the best situation of his career and at times playin the best basketball of his career. Theres no doubt he would've considered takin less money to stay in Phoenix. Hell he might end up comin back one day.

Too little too late ?
I think Gentry got a call from upstairs. No proof, just a hunch.

I'm feeling that hunch too. Seems too coincidental we stayed with the same lineup through all of this until the last game which basically took us out of the playoff race.

I think two modes are switched ON by Babby/Blanks.

1. Tank - looking for 1 or 2 spots higher in the Draft.
2. Check out what do we finally have in the roster (read this: who's hit, who's ****).

After 10 games, FO will decide: who's gonna be replaced. I say - replaced, 'couse I think Carter/Lopez/Chilldress are already supposed to be out of the team. It's about: can Dudley be a real start, or not. Will Gortat go into early foul trouble getting started, or not. Can Brooks lead the Suns for 25-30 mins, or not?

It's crucial. After we have this answers, FO will set final goals for the offseason.

All this situation can suggest that Alvin Gentry is done with this team, too.

That's what I think.
Offense wins games, Defense wins championships...

Now our bench is going to suck. There was a reason we wanted Gortat/Dudley to play with the 2nd unit.

JRich said somewhere that he was glad to be where he was because he was playing good, his stats were up and that put him in position for one more nice contract - it was quoted here many times but there's no longer a search function

you can't blame the guy - he should take the payday if he can get it. he has the rest of his life to think about

anyway, now that he's sucking in ORL, maybe he'll want to come back for the MLE
