Draft Prospects?

Post#1 » by BiggMann » Thu Mar 10, 2011 4:43 pm

Trading Deron obviously set us back a bit, but we did receive good compensation for him. This thread is dedicated to figuring out who those pick are gonna get us...

We've got NJ '11 first round pick, (estimated right now at #6) and our first round pick (estimated now at #13). Then going forward we'll have GS '12 first round pick.

I think this years draft is a good one for point guards, I love what i'm reading about Kyrie Irving but i'm guessing he'll go 1-2. Dont think Fredette is our answer at PG, but i'd love the kid as a bench scorer (something we are severely lacking). I've also been doing some reading on Kemba Walker out of UCONN, sounds like a phenom athlete with ability to run PG pretty well.

Outside of PG's the talent pool pretty much co-insides with our squad. Couple good PF's out there in Derrick Williams and Jared Sullinger, but we've pretty much got those positions on lock. Center like Enes Kanter would be nice, but i'm liking what Fesenko is bringing to the floor I just think he needs some time out there. Now there are some really talented swing men in this years draft, like Perry Jones (assuming he comes out), Harrison Barnes out of UNC, Terrance Jones out of Kentucky or even Jan Vessley out of the Czech Rep.

Heres my prospect board:

Kyrie Irving, PG - Duke
Perry Jones III, SF - Baylor
Harrison Barnes, SF - UNC
Terrance Jones, SF - Kentucky
Derrick Williams, PF - Arizona
Brandon Knight, PG - Kentucky
Enes Kanter, C - Kentucky
Jimmer Fredette, PG/SG - BYU
Kemba Walker, PG - UCONN
Jared Sullinger, PF - Ohio St.
Jan Vesser, SF/PF - Czech Rep
Alec Burks, SG - Colorado
Donatas Motiejunas, C - Lithuania

thats 13 prospects, i'm guess we end up with at least one of these if not two.

thoughts?

Jones will definitely be in the draft since he was recently declared ineligible for NCAA due to receiving benefits.

I'm not sold on Fesenko having a future with this team. He shows flashes but can't put anything together with any consistency--and can't stay out of foul trouble half the time.

I do still hold out hope that Okur will manage a comeback for next year since I know nobody is going to touch his contract...

This draft is really bad for shooting guards so I think we should target a SF with long range.

Appears to be a big time do every PG talent.

Perry Jones III, SF - Baylor
Don't touch him with a ten foot pole. He is afraid of defense and rebounding. Incredible physical talent.

Harrison Barnes, SF - UNC
A good athlete- probably at his best at SF. Good jumper, developing slashing game.

Terrance Jones, SF - Kentucky
Little bit of headcase. Great body- SF/PF skills.

Derrick Williams, PF - Arizona
SF/PF skills. Great demanor on the court and very efficient game. May be too small to be full time PF. Nearly perfect intangibles.

Brandon Knight, PG - Kentucky
Know very little about him.
Enes Kanter, C - Kentucky
Supposedly a talented and skilled big man. Hasn't played recently due to NCAA infractions.

Jimmer Fredette, PG/SG - BYU
Incredible shooter and scorer. Likely defensive liability. Winning intangibles.

Kemba Walker, PG - UCONN
Incredible quick scorer. Not a great distributor. Too small for SG.

Jared Sullinger, PF - Ohio St.
Post player and rebound in the elton brand physical mold. Questions about his body weight.

Jan Vesser, SF/PF - Czech Rep
Dunno about him.

Alec Burks, SG - Colorado
Lanky player who battles. Developing jumper. Unknown defensive ability as NBA 2.

Donatas Motiejunas, C - Lithuania
Doesn't seem to have improved in the last 3 years he had flirted with NBA draft.

Personally I like Irving the best, then Derrick Williams and then Barnes.

Worst case scenario is that we land 7 with the Nets pick, and just behind the Suns with our pick. Which will leave us either reaching on Jimmer with 7, or losing him to the Suns. Cuz you know that's what the Jazz will do if they land 7. And honestly, I'm not sure there is anyone who would help this team more than Jimmer from 7 through 14. Just pretty even playing field from 7-14.

My prospects:
Kyrie Irving
Perry Jones
Harrison Barnes
D-Will
Sullinger
Terrance Jones
Jimmer
Kemba

All-in-all, walking away from this draft with Jimmer and Kemba wouldn't kill me. I'd prefer just about any of the top 6+Jimmer/Kemba tho. The nice thing about Jimmer would be that we wouldn't have to worry about him bolting for the bright lights. And the guy is bred for the Jazz 2 PG on the floor at a time system.

Kemba is nasty. Breaks his ankles, then hits the buzzer beater for the win on #3 Pitt.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. That was sick.

I wouldn't be all that pleased if we took Jimmer with the NJ pick, but if we can get somebody like Barnes with that pick and get Jimmer with our pick, I'd call that a pretty solid draft. Somehow, the idea of using a top ten pick (especially one that we traded Deron for) on a guy who is probably best suited to coming off the bench in the NBA doesn't really excite me, but we do need shooting and Jimmer's a damn good shooter, so I wouldn't mind if he slipped down to our second lotto pick.

I'm all for picking Jimmer with our 2nd pick, if Kemba is gone. Our first needs to be a swing at a guy that could one day be a gamer. Like Harrison Barnes or Terrance Jones. Both of these guys could be allstars. Maybe not but both have a real shot at it.

Jimmer with our first pick would be awful. If he ends up with the Jazz with our second pick I'll understand, he fits a need, and he could turn out to be solid, but if he is picked in the top 10 I'll be shocked. He's a big time scorer, but he is going to struggle to be anything more than a spot up shooter and spot back up PG in the NBA. He just doesn't have the size or speed to be much more.

Here is my pre-workout/measurement board w/some comparisons (top 15):
1: Kyrie Irving - Comparison: Chauncey Billups
2: Derrick Williams - Comparison: Michael Beasley or David West
3: Jared Sullinger (but it sounds like he is pulling out) - Comparison: More athletic/skilled Glen Davis
4: Enes Kanter - Comparison: Al Horford or smaller Andrew Bogut
5: Harrison Barnes - Comparison: Luol Deng, Caron Butler, John Salmons or Al-Faruoq Aminu
6: Donatas Motiejunas - Marc Gasol or more athletic Brad Miller
7: Kemba Walker - Comparison: Aaron Brooks, Ty Lawson, Lou Williams or Jonny Flynn
8: Perry Jones - Comparison: Javale McGee or Deandre Jordan with more potential
9: Brandon Knight - Comparison: Brandon Jennings, Jrue Holiday or Rodrigue Beaubois
10: Terrence Jones - Comparison: More athletic Borris Diaw or Marvin Williams
11: Kawhi Leonard - Comparison: More athletic Udonis Haslem, Tyrus Thomas or Luc Mbah A Moute
12: Jonas Valanciunas - Comparison: Samuel Delembert or Nenad Kristic
13: Jan Vesley - Comparison: Andrei Kirilenko or Anthony Randolph
14: Alec Burks - Comparison: JR Smith, Nick Young or Kelenna Azubuike
15: Jimmer Fredette - More talented Eddie House, shorter/less defensive/athletic Jason Terry or Stephen Curry

The hardest guys for me to find comparisons to were the foreign guys since I don't have much to go off of and the guys I haven't seen much of such as Burks, Jones (both of them) and Irving.

I'm still hoping we can land at #3. Was it you, Bat, who did the math and realized we have a one in four chance of moving up?

I really hope we can snatch Jimmer with our (2nd) pick. He sure as hell helps with our outside shooting, he's smart, a winner and I think he'll really compliment Harris as his primary backup. With that said, I think we should go for the best talent at the wing position available when we first pick. If we can get a stud wing to pair with Hayward and CJ (yeah, he gets hate, but he's talented and athletic, and playing much better since being a starter) we'll have a much much much better wing rotation. Add the fact of Millsap and maybe Evans playing some 3, and if AK wants to return for cheap, we're set!!

Harris / Jimmer / Price
CJ / Hayward / Bell (ugh)
Millsap / rookie wing /
Favors / AK? / Evans
Al / Memo / (one of Fess, Tomic or <insert big guy that won't play much here>)

That's a preatty good/strong team, versatile, athletic, tall and young. Preatty cheap too (Memo's expiring).

If we somehow get rid of Bell, then we improve even more!!!

Strange fact: both times the Jazz have ever had a top ten lottery pick they've drafted a player who lost in the NCAA championship game.

So I guess we should pay attention next Monday to whichever team loses. :)

i would be okay with the jazz picking up burks with their pick. best sg prospect and he probably deserves to go a lot higher than he is projected.
