Re: Official Raptors 2011 NBA Draft Thread, Part 5
Why are everyone saying that our SF should be a great ball handler and creator? Derrick Williams won't be a player like this but on the offensive end he will be a beast. Maybe he won't take people off the dribble consistantly from the three point line but is it necessary? We can post him up in low post or even high post. This way he'll power his way to the rim and get to line multiple times every game. Plus he has a great outside shot.
I really wish we can get one of Irving or D-will and if it's possible to trade up I'd consider it. A core of Irving/D-Will, Derozan and Davis is already looking promising, just need one more piece who we can get from the next draft.
I can't see Knight and Barnes having the same kind of ability to impact games as these two guys. I like Val but he might be a bust and is a projet. P. Jones is just too risky.
D-Will and Irving are the prize of the draft and IMO we need explore any way to get them.

Re: Official Raptors 2011 NBA Draft Thread, Part 5
I'm hoping we go into 2012/2013 with some combination of this roster:
PG: Kyrie Irving or Myck Kabongo/Teague/Rivers (if he can play PG)
SG: DeMar DeRozan
SF: Quincy Miller or Derrick Williams/Harrison Barnes/Perry Jones
PF: Ed Davis
C: Andrea Bargnani
6th man: Amir Johnson
By then Jose will be in the final year of his contract, making him a $10M expiring. We could trade him in '12-'13 to a team that wants future salary flexibility and a serviceable PG for the stretch run. Hopefully he'll be playing well enough to net us a pick, another potential starter or 1-2 solid reserves. Bargnani will still be owed 3 years so we could, if possible, trade him for expiring contracts to open up the possibility of signing a big name FA center in the summer of '13.
The only guys we'd come out of the lockout paying are all young & talented. Amir, Kleiza, Bayless, and James Johnson could develop into a pretty strong bench. Ideally we'll end up with Kyrie, DeRozan, Quincy Miller and Ed Davis, who all have star potential. A number of defensive centers would love to play with that lineup, especially since we'd have $$ to spend.
I could see the Kings, T-Wolves, Cavs, Wizards, Clippers & Nets all improving next year. If we don't make any drastic moves this summer then I don't think tanking will be very difficult during a shortened season. Plus we'd keep our cap flexibility. Who knows what the future holds but I'm not ready to draft/not draft someone because Andrea or Jose are here. D-Will might look good next to a great shooting PG, Ed and a defensive 5. Can't wait for the butterflies that the ping pong balls will bring in 1 & 1/2 months.

Because Derozan can't handle the ball or create either and you just can't have two wing players like that. There's also the fact that his ability to defend SFs is unproven, even at the college level.
Why can't Knight have as much or more impact. He can create, get to the rim, defend and rebound. He has great size for his position with really good athleticism and he's an 18 year old freshman. I think that kind of guard has a much bigger impact on the NBA game than a post up 3 (assuming that's what Williams is).

I really don't think Dwill can play the 3. But I'll wait and see. Anways why no love for Gilchrist?
I have yet to watch Lebryan Nash play. I wonder what his style is like.

I agree. I'm not sold on Dwill at the 3. I think he could be a really good undersized 4. But again, workouts and combine will settle the debate.

I'm not sure the exact date but last year it was May 18th. 2009 was the 19th of May. 2008 was the 20th of May. And so on...
Going by that pattern, I'd assume it's the 17th of May

in regards to the 2012 draft, I'm not giving these H.S highlights too much thought or these dunk-offs. Once they step into the NCAA and play real competition and a longer season. Thats when you start caring. Cause they could have all the hype in the world. But if they don't preform well and under pressure no ones gonna care.

Re: Official Raptors 2011 NBA Draft Thread, Part 5
Some good draft stuff in David Thorpe's latest chat:
http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/ ... vid-thorpe
http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/ ... vid-thorpe
Marc (Charlotte)
Coach, just wondering if you've caught any NCAA Tourney games, and if so, what players impressed you.
David Thorpe (12:17 PM)
That's what I've been doing, more or less. Walker, Barnes, Henson, Knight, Sullinger, Jones.
Jeremy H (Minneapolis)
Who projects as a better point guard in the NBA, Brandon Knight or Kemba Walker?
David Thorpe (12:25 PM)
I like Knight better over the long haul-longer and bigger. But I'm a big Walker fan too.
Neil (Manhattan)
It seams all the "experts" have labeled this years draft as a weak class. After watching watching the tournament it seems this draft has a lot more talent then people think. How does this class match up against the last couple of years in your view?
David Thorpe (12:38 PM)
Weak and shallow. But there are still 15 or so guys who will make it. And a few strong starters/stars are possible.
edizz1e (Queens, NY)
What is Brandon Knight's ceiling?
David Thorpe (12:41 PM)
All-star. Reminds me a lot of Billups in his Pistons run.
Jeff (Toronto)
KEMBA Walker. Starting PG, Excellent 6th Man Scorer or 'Change of Pace' back-up PG that is a rotation player at best?
David Thorpe (12:57 PM)
He's at least an excellent scoring guard off the bench. He definitely has starter potential.

im still surprised he came into NCAA as an unknown prospect, didn't even crack into the top 100 list too...wtf were the scouts doing lol

David Thorpe (12:22 PM)
I'd consider Irving, Knight, Williams, or Barnes, depending on my needs. All have similar upsides.
I don't think Knight will be in contention for the first overall pick, but I expect he'll be in the discussion wherever we pick.

Obviously...but past participants like Amare Stoudemire, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Blake Griffin, Vince Carter, DeMar DeRozan and Perry Jones really distinguished themselves with their athleticism in the competition. Austin Rivers did the same thing last night. You can't teach someone to become an amazing leaper with great body control. If they prove that they can do it with ease then look out. It's one of many steps when evaluating a player. What he does at Duke will be the most important.

My board looks like this:
Irving
Barnes
Knight
Jones (he could be at 3 if he's a definite SF)
Val/Kanter (I'll leave this decision to the scouts)
Personally, I think I'd be happy with any of these guys, especially Irving/Barnes. Knight/Jones would keep me excited because they have the highest ceilings in the draft. Val/Kanter would be ok because we need a defensive C in the worst possible way.
I'd trade D-Will and Walker if they were projected as consensus BPA at our slot. Sullinger seems to be heading back but I'd put him in that category as well.
