Shannon Brown's shooting is a problem
Even with our record, we've obviously been having some problems with our bench. I think a lot of that has to do with Shannon Brown. The guy is just so damn aggressive and shoots too much. If you're a good player, that's fine, but he just doesn't have a consistent jump shot. Even worse, is that he thinks that he's better than he really is, hence the over-shooting. On the other hand, I love when he drives to the basket, and uses his athleticism to get off a 5-7 foot shot, or a dunk/lay-up. Also, I have no problem at all if he shoots a spot up open shot created by ball movement. Same goes with Barnes and Blake - I want them to shoot the ball if they are passed the ball in rhythm and are open.
I think that we actually have too many plays (in general) that we run where the jump shot is the end goal (i.e. Big sets a screen for Brown [or Blake, Barnes] at the top of the key, hands off, and the jumper is taken). I think that Phil wants to instill confidence in the bench, but still think that the ball should go into Gasol or Bynum (or even Odom) FIRST, and then pass it back out if a double team comes. If healthy, we all know that either Gasol or Bynum will be on the floor, and we need to be getting the higher percentage shots.

Re: Shannon Brown's shooting is a problem
I completely agree, this is why I don't have too much of a problem with Kobe, but his occasional over chucking is magnified when Brown comes in and puts up even more shots. I'm ok with Kobe attacking early and then when he goes to the bench we should pound the paint like nothing else. Yet somehow our second unit just ends up shooting long jumpers every single time.
As good as Bynum has played as a starter I'd almost rather see him go to the bench early for Lamar at like 5-6 mins in, then come back in for Pau sooner when the bench gets going, that we he could be the primary focus of the bench offense.

Re: Shannon Brown's shooting is a problem
I agree and disagree, he has a jumpshot, what he doesnt have is a jumpshot off the dribble, which is why i dont want him dribbling the ball, he can sit in his corner, run off screens, whatever. But don't give him any ball handling responsibilities.
He needs to improve his work off the ball, he has the speed to do tons of backdoor cuts and off-ball screen work, ala Ray Allen. (no im not comparing him to ray allen)

Shannon has shot below 30% from 3 the past 3 months. He's sucked big time.

Re: Shannon Brown's shooting is a problem
I commented on Shannons shooting a while ago. He plays as if Phil has giving him the green light. Maybe Phil did
I wish he would move the ball more, and if the ball comes back to him in the same possession then shoot. But this dude shoots like he's the first option.

Re: Shannon Brown's shooting is a problem
He doesn't have a shooting problem, he has a bball IQ and shot selection problem. He's a good shooter. Even MIchael Jordan would average his percentage with that kind of shot selection.

Shannon brown on the team is a problem. He cant even dribble in control. His defense is beyond horrilbe. Hes good for his speed and dunking and 3 pointers ever so often..

Re: Shannon Brown's shooting is a problem
What more mind wrecking is when Shannon contests the 3'pointers, he just run to the other basket.
That's gonna come back to bite him in a close game. It could easily lead to a offensive rebound and a basked. And he doesn't even try to jump when he's defending the 3's, he just runs by the defender.
That is an issue.

Re: Shannon Brown's shooting is a problem
It's been an issue recently, but I'm confident that it's something that'll work itself out. I'm not really gonna stress about it-- it does seem like he has the green light, maybe this is by design. I'm sure Phil will sort it out.
15-1.
Let's see what happens on Thursday.

Re: Shannon Brown's shooting is a problem
Yeah we've talked about this recently. He shoots way too much. I saw a box score (could have been last game) where Drew shot 83% from the field (5 of 6) & Shannon shot the ball about 11 time & I think he made 4. We said a couple of weeks ago he shouldn't have more shots than Drew or any other starter.

Re: Shannon Brown's shooting is a problem
Well ankle it's not that he should never have more shots then Drew (although he probably shouldn't) but its that those shots should at least come off Drew and Pau touching it in the post. The worst part of our bench and Shannon is the biggest culprit is that the ball never even gets to the post. If he is going to shoot it off a kick out or some ball movement, fine, but it just seems like when the bench is in the ball just floats around the perimeter and ends in a crap jump shot. Even Lamar ends up being more perimeter oriented when he's in with the bench. He's played well but he is at his best when he's cutting and diving off the ball and screens when Kobe, Pau, and Drew are working inside.
Shannon's biggest problem is he simply can't create, he can shoot and get shots off, and he can jump and finish when there is a lane, but he seems to have zero ability to make the defense do any adjustment and make anything happen from it. I can't remember the last time I saw him create any sort of pass that led to anything productive.
Compare him to JR Smith who a lot of people say is even more of a chucker with even less BBIQ, but I see him all the time drive and kick to a shooter or dish to a cutter or force the defense to react and start a hockey assist. To me that just shows how little IQ and impact Shannon really has. The more I've paid attention and thought about it, the more it disturbs me. I like the kid's effort and attitude most of the time, but I'm coming to the conclusion that he just really isn't a good player.

good comparison actually, jr smith is even more of a chucker than shannon brown but shannon is just dunks and 3s for the most part.
thing is, we actually have a bench so improving the bench play would be shannon finally recognizing that he doesn't have to try and give us his best kobe impersonation (minus the shot making).

On top of his low bbiq, horrible dribbling skills and no shot off the dribble. he just doesnt know how to PASS THE BALL hense the contested jumpshots that he takes... and might i add for every contested one he makes, he misses about four or five of them
i hope they set this foo straight come playoffs

Re: Shannon Brown's shooting is a problem
Yah, see if even JR dumbass Smith can at least kind of get it, create for others, why can't Shannon?
He needs to go to the DWill school of passing. AKA we need to ship him to Spokane for a few weeks with Johnny Stock.
That or Magic needs to get off his has and be like 'Boy, let me teach you a thing or two...'

I always see him as a fastbreak dunker. His handling is mediocre and at times his shooting is off or on.

I'm starting to think of this also. Maybe this is actually the role Phil wants for Shannon? I don't think I have seen Phil get mad or benched Shannon, when hes playing poor or whenever he makes a dumb play. Even if hes playing bad he still gets his minutes, so maybe Phil actually gave Shannon the license to chuck?

contract-itis
his dunks make it easy to forget how much he damages the triangle offense sometimes, but he's playing for a sg money contract when he should be playing for Fisher's spot
