WT: Morey Looking For Star, Owner Prefers Status Quo

Let's be real about this. The Rockets' only chance of contending in the near future lies with Yao coming back healthy. He was an elite big man before he went down. If he comes back and gives the Rockets 20-9-2 on 52% shooting in 75 games this team wins at least 55 games. Lowry is becoming a beast, Martin would be even more deadly, Scola would never be doubled again, and our starting center wouldn't be shorter than the opposing team's 3.

If that's Alexander's status quo then I'm happy. If his status quo is letting Yao go with no intention of replacing some of what he brought then the Rockets are screwed. Their talent is going to improve, but not to championship level.

Right on, I don't see any superstar out there that we could sign/trade and still keep our "core together". Alot of this is depended on Yao, If he can comeback and give us 75% of his normal production I would be happy. Honestly we need Yao anchor our D more than his offense, as much as I love Chuckwagon, but he's better suited around 15-20 minute.

yao has played 5 games in 2 seasons. you start off by saying lets be real, then expect him to put up 20/9/2 in 75 games.

our 1 need a defensive anchor at center. offensive game would be a plus. 2nd need an elite defender at the wing ala battier in his prime. if we somehow manage to make that happen, everything else will fall into place. lowry would be a capable starting point guard. kevin martin would be good for 20ppg in 30min. with lee backing him up and also martin seeing less min. at the end of the game. the power forward spot will be a solid defender and depending on our C may need to be a low post presence.

Les said during the game he joined Bill and Clyde that he was very disappointed w/the results of the trade deadline,claiming two teams pulled out of deals.
I somehow doubt he was really excited about the Lee to Chicago proposed deal,or a rumored Miller for Pachulia deal w/Atlanta.
My guess is Houston had a deal w/Boston for Perkins involving Shane(the deal Doc claimed he killed before Perkins was traded to OKC)and a deal w/Charlotte for Wallace involving Jeffries(until Portland outbid the Rockets).

that would have been one of hell of a trade deadline. the 2 pieces missing in the houston starting lineup is the big man in the middle to anchor the defense and also a top defensive wing. those positions would have been taken care of with gerald wallace and kendrick perkins/omer asik.

just to put it in perspective, since perkins joined okc, their opponent ppg has dropped by about 10ppg.

Suppose the Rockets end up 43-39,a 1 game improvement over last yr. Not much improvement is it?
OTOH,it would mean that w/Lowry starting and Martin,Scola and Hayes starting most games beside him,the Rockets went 42-33. If the Rockets had won at the same rate in those first 7 games the team would have @ 45/46 wins.That's a borderline Play-Off team that just needs a tweak or two,perhaps a better bench and an upgrade or two in starting group..
That may be what Les is seeing,a borderline Play-Off team that w/a smart addition or two,and better coaching,vaults to contender status.
Morey may be seeing a team that is overachieving,has no go-to guy in crunch time and has no margin of error if it wants to win. He sees a team that needs a superstar who can carry the team when it is struggling.
