OT: Rangers sign Cuban prospect for 12 million

Post#1 » by darth_federer » Thu Apr 7, 2011 5:48 pm

How good is Leonys Martin, the Cuban center fielder who is close to signing with the Rangers?

Good enough that the Red Sox were said by a source to have offered $12 million, and good enough that the Rangers topped that offer.

Good enough that if he were available in this June's draft, he probably would have been the first position player taken.

"He's much, much better than Jackie Bradley," one scout said, referring to the South Carolina outfielder expected to go high in the first round.

The scout, whose team dropped out of the Martin bidding, said that the 23-year-old Martin isn't big-league ready, at least not as a hitter.

"In most systems, he'd probably start in Double-A, maybe high A," the scout said. "He's a very good runner, top-end speed. He can play center field. His routes aren't great, but he can play center field. But he's not a lock with the bat, and you have to see how he adjusts [to playing and living in the U.S.]"

According to MLB.com and the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, which first reported that a deal was close, Martin will sign a major-league contract but will start his career in the minors.

Martin defected from Cuba late last summer, after playing in the World University Championships in Taiwan. He was a reserve outfielder on Cuba's 2009 World Baseball Classic team.

The prices for these int'l signings just keep going higher and higher. At least the Sox didn't get him.

International prospects tend to always get overrated. Just look at Dice-K. He was supposed to be the GOAT pitcher coming over. Teams were bidding a fortune just to get him here. We all know how that turned out.

yeah...this guy doesn't sound great. Already 23 and questions about his defense and his bat. I wouldn't spend $12mm for that!

I thought Toronto was one of the front-runners for Leonys Martin. WTF happened?

This is the problem with baseball. For the teams who spend money, it doesn't matter how much they spend. It's just a choice of wanting the player or not.

Japan is different. Most players that come over are pretty much at their primes and unless you're a freak of nature like Ichiro, the player is going to be trending downwards mid-way or at the tail-end of the contract. Look at what happened with Matsuzaka and Matsui. Plus, the posting system makes it impossible to have a good return for the dollar on the player.

Unless the deal makes economic sense like it did with Ichiro (and like it will with Yu Darvish), it's hard to justify spending so much money on a Japanese import.

Latin players are different. There's no posting system so the signing bonus goes straight to the player. A lot less investment goes into them.

As for Leonys Martin, Adeiny Hechavarria got $10M, and Martin is supposed to have a better bat than him, so $12M doesn't seem that bad an offer. Martin is slightly older though. John Manuel at Baseball America seems to like him (slightly concerned about his bat though)

Just about every team has the flexibility to sign a guy for $12m over three or four years (I'm guessing that it's the latter). The Royals, the cheapest team in baseball this year, are paying useless-sack-o'-bones Jason Kendall $3.75m this season...more than Martin's deal likely averages, and they routinely top that figure on amateur bonuses.

Because the dollar figures are relatively low -- when compared to major league free agents -- for all but the absolute elite kiddies, it's actually the one area where the playing field isn't horrifically distorted. Teams with money can still get ahead, but they don't to the same extent.
