Dotel on track for return during road trip

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Thu Apr 7, 2011 5:55 pm

Right-hander Octavio Dotel threw in a Minor League intrasquad game in Dunedin, Fla., on Wednesday, and appears on schedule to rejoin the Blue Jays at some stage of the upcoming trip.

Dotel opened the season on the disabled list after suffering a strained hamstring during a Spring Training outing.

"We were able to extend him again, on purpose, as part of the plan he threw 26 pitches," manager John Farrell said on Thursday. "He's throwing the ball very well.

"We'll have internal discussions about when he will be activated. We still think it will be sometime on this road trip."

Another Minor League outing could be in store for Dotel before he rejoins the big league club. "That's a possibility," Farrell said.

Janssen certainly doesn't deserve that after his very good season in 2010. He's probably a better overall pitcher than Dotel. But I don't see any easy solutions here...we have too many good relievers.

Tough pill for Janssen, who's easily done enough to deserve his spot, but still has options so he's the odd man out. At least Accardo isn't still at AAA to put ideas into his head.

What happens when Francisco is ready? Either scrabble goes to AAA or we trade a RP..

Villanueva going down would be my guess, he still has options. Then you have Morrow coming up... who do you send down now?

Janssen had a significantly better FIP/xFIP than Dotel in a tougher division last year. So we're actually downgrading with this move, unfortunately.

Dotel can only be properly used if he never faces a lefty. Managers never use him a strict ROOGY, though, and they get burned for it.

Well to play a little devil's advocate, you don't waste assets in April that you almost assuredly need for an extended period by mid-summer, so there is justification to send down a superior reliever with options to keep secure your arms for the inevitable injuries that will occur during the grind.

I do admit I never understood adding those 3 RHP arms when they had Camp, Janssen, and Frasor already though (when it happened I just assumed they already had a move ready to divest themselves of a guy). Since that doesn't appear to have been the case, I think in hindsight Dotel was a bit of an insurance signing 'cause they did need another arm and may have felt they were about to miss out (that's just me justifying though), then they didn't pass on Rauch when they got him and then the Wells move opened up trading for Francisco, who I'll assume they had as a targeted potential long-term closer option but didn't feel they had the right pieces to acquire at the time they signed Dotel. So dominoes fell after the initial Dotel signing and it's not like having too many arms is something GMs often complain about, but my guess is if AA had predicted Rauch and Francisco, Dotel never ends up signed.

As for ROOGY and manager's incapacity to use him as such, I'm perfectly content to give them the benefit of the doubt until there's actually something to point to. Hopefully, they all pitch like they have and we are able to leverage this with all the team's that will be in need of quality arms, 'cause there are always teams in need.

I hate to see a guy like Janssen be sent down when he really doesn't deserve it. The demotions when Francisco and Morrow come back will also be tough choices. Yes you want to manage your assets for the longterm benefit of the organization, but you also don't want major league players stewing in the minors...
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Dotel is one guy I can see accepting arbitration at the end of this season, unless he has a simply amazing year. He's old, can't get lefties out, and is making ~$3 million this season. He won't be a Type A free agent, but even as a Type B is any other team going to give him more than the Jays would have to if he accepted arby? I doubt it.

Signing Dotel was a mistake in hindsight. Much like with Rivera, they are just trying to get as much value out of the money spent as they can rather than sink the cost (although I don't think too many people would complain if they released Rivera). Sucks for Janssen though. He's better than Dotel.
