OT: Manny Ramirez retires

Post#1 » by Schad » Fri Apr 8, 2011 8:25 pm

Wow. Apparently he tripped up the drug testing program, and he opted to retire instead.

Wow what a strange end to his career.

We should all be thankful that he didn't end up here.

Meh, wouldn't have really made a difference; we didn't acquire anyone because we failed to get him, he only played a couple games, and now the Rays don't have to pay him. Zero effect either way.

Wow. What a bad way to end a great career. Would have loved if the Jays signed him, but I guess it wouldn't have mattered.

I wonder if they'll say screw it and bring up Jennings before June.

Ah well.. great hitter but he was a nutjob.

Too bad his steroid suspicions will probably keep him out of the HOF

One of the greatest hitters of all time and would be a sure-fire HOF if most of the writers weren't morons.

Apparently needed to find some better masking agents, though.

I think this does hurt TB. While they paid little for his services, what moves did they not make figuring on Manny being there?

They didn't forgo any moves to sign Manny and Damon. They were signed as a package deal from Boras at the very end of the offseason and even that sort of came as a surprise. Before that, they planned on using their internal options to replace all the players they lost (they also added 10 picks in the top 75 this year for losing all those players). It's not like they were expected to be this bad. Losing Crawford hurt badly but Damon and Manny should've been adequate, while Pena and Bartlett didn't give them much last year anyway. It's the bullpen where they're going to rely on sleepers to step up.

Manny will be Manny...

I wouldn't be surprised if two things happened:

1) He was roiding it throughout his whole career.
2) It holds him out of the HOF.

I don't remember him lying to anybody, I remember him taking steroids like most of the other players of his era.

And to think some people wanted the Jays to sign him. Thankfully AA was probably never interested.
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

The fans that care about a higher team OBP wanted to sign him.
