Nick Diaz moving to boxing???

Post#1 » by Blame Rasho » Sat Apr 16, 2011 3:15 am

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Traine ... 2011-31629

Nick Diaz is seriously contemplating a move to professional boxing, and possible opponents are starting to materialize.

However, former two-time boxing world champion Fernando Vargas, originally mentioned as a likely opponent in an interview with HDNet’s “Inside MMA” by Diaz’s manager, Cesar Gracie, told Sherdog.com that he has not been approached with the proposed contest.

“Nobody has contacted me or my team about a fight with Nick Diaz for a supposed September fight,” said Vargas. “I have not been in the gym but I have been running and keeping myself in shape. If they're serious about fighting me then put the money where their mouth is and let's see what they're talking about.”

On Thursday afternoon, Gracie told Sherdog.com that former IBF super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy is the frontrunner for Diaz's potential 2011 boxing debut.

“We've already signed on with [boxing promoter] Don Chargin to take the fight. He's contacting [Lacy's camp],” said Gracie. “[Lacy] is a scrapper. I think he and Nick could [put on a great show].”

According to Gracie, Diaz's contract with Strikeforce allows him to fight one boxing match in 2011. Though Lacy is at the top of Gracie's list, there are several other potential opponents in the mix.

“There are a couple of names. There's [Ring Magazine middleweight champion] Sergio Martinez. I don't know if he even knows about this,” said Gracie. “[Ricardo] Mayorga isn't out of the question. I think Don King has his contract. But we're looking at big names. Guys with name recognition.”

Diaz is often quoted as expressing dissatisfaction with his paydays in mixed martial arts, citing boxing salaries as a reference. Gracie agrees with the sentiment, asserting that the MMA pay scale is far too low, especially for a fighter as dynamic as Diaz.

“A lot of people get on Nick for his comments about not making a lot of money. And yes, you could take a guy who works nine to five for one year and it's still not as much as what Nick makes in one day, and Nick understands that,” said Gracie. “But you also can look at a boxer who [is not at the same level as Diaz is in MMA], and he's making $1 million [per fight]. Or take a baseball player who isn't even getting hits, and he's making [millions of dollars]. Nick is one of the most technical fighters on the planet, and he's fighting for peanuts.”

However, this does not represent the entirety of why Diaz may make the move to the sweet science. As Gracie tells it, Diaz is disenchanted with the sport of mixed martial arts itself, a sport which requires tireless dedication and a high pain tolerance if one is to make a serious living as a fighter.

“You've got to understand that it's hard to keep these guys motivated when they've been fighting for so long. Nick's been doing this for like 10 years,” said Gracie. “So we might have to get Nick out of MMA for a while. Maybe we'll do some jiu-jitsu tournaments.”

According to a release from HDNet, Gracie has stated that unless UFC President Dana White offered Diaz a bout with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, Diaz's next bout would take place in a boxing ring. When asked if bouts with the UFC's top welterweight contenders might sway Diaz to postpone his boxing bout, Gracie was frank in his response.

“Remember when Anderson Silva wanted to fight GSP at a catchweight? Why not fight Nick Diaz at a catch-weight? Nick will go up to 178 tomorrow,” said Gracie. “GSP would be the guy [Diaz would want to fight at welterweight]. But GSP is fighting [Diaz's teammate] Jake Shields [at UFC 129 ], and Nick thinks that Jake is going to beat him. So why would Nick be in the welterweight division?”

I don't know as much about striking as some on this forum, but to me it doesn't seem like he has the defense for boxing.

In the end I think he just wants to fight GSP without going through the gauntlet of wrestlers to get there.

He got dropped several times and a better finisher would have gotten out already...

He mentions Martinez as if he is a nobody....

It is this guy...

and that is with 10 ounce gloves...

He bitches way too much for my liking. He isn't going to get millions while in strikeforce... he should know that.

The only way he get millions is if HBO buys a fight from him, and even at that... HBO has some standards of crap they are willing to put up.

What **** delusion. Martinez would beat him with one hand tied behind his back. Not an exaggeration.

What's he going to do that Paul Williams couldn't? Hell, I think Williams might be even rangier than Diaz at 160.

Martinez is the second best boxer in the world. To think because Andre Ward goofed around a couple rounds of sparring with you, you're a top boxer on the planet makes you a complete assh**e.

Uh, I grew up watching up boxing as my Dad is a big fan.

I like MMA a lot, but going toe-to-toe with a pro boxer is a joke.

Someone better talk Nick out of this, because he'll be f'n owned.

If he fought Silva, he'd get KTFO.
If he fought any big name in boxing, he'd get KTFO.

It sounds to me like he just wants a payday.

I honestly doubt he has ever put on some gloves and stood in front of someone... I am Mexican American and grew up actually fighting(boxed in amateurs as a teenager)... and seeing him post that was just silly.

Yes. I'm merely one of the nerdy white boys who does not understand Nick Diaz's plight.

Diaz would probably get smashed by every name brought up in that article. Is Mayorga even washed up enough for that fight to be competitive?

LOL @ a fight with Anderson Silva.

Mayorga would love that fight. He did pretty well against Cotto, as you probably know.

No one's swung at Diaz in sparring like Mayorga can swing.

Mayorga just fought the best 154 fighter in some people eyes and looked half way respectable. Mayorga is a benchmark for elite boxers... but a washed benchmark will really bust Diaz up. Mayorga when he wants to can throw some straight punches and has an uppercut that can land with regularity.

The mentality that he can outbox a boxer is beyond stupid if he thinks that, so his only chance is via KO. It is rare to have one punch KO power in boxing, even the biggest and baddest guys in their weight classes in boxing don't have it. It takes more than brute force for you to have it. He doesn't throw punches that will hurt a boxer with 10 ounce gloves... BTW, anything above 147 boxing uses 10 ounce gloves. Below that it is 8.

I honestly doubt that he can take a punch. He gets hit far too often by arm punches for me or anyone to seriously give him a chance vs a guy who will most likely know how to hit a guy who leaves himself open.

A part of me wants to see Anderson Silva vs him... just for the freakness of such an event. I also think that Silva is a douche so... I would want to see him make an ass out of himself.

Fair enough...I thought of the guys mentioned Mayorga might just be washed up enough (he was already going to fight Din Thomas in an MMA fight) to make it a fight (that Diaz would still lose handily, but possibly not in embarrassing fashion), but I'll defer to the boxing authorities on this one.

I kinda hope this happens though. Diaz needs to be taken down a peg or twelve.

If Nick is looking to make a few million, go to boxing. If not stick with MMA. Not sure what the top MMA fighters make, but seems like Nick is looking for more than a few hundred thousand. IMO he should stay in MMA.

Mayorga would give Nick Diaz the fight of his life in a boxing match.

Obviously if this were MMA, Mayorga would get his ass handed to him.

He might be washed up as far as contending for a championship goes, but he's got more than enough in the tank to give somebody a serious war.

Nick Diaz is an IDIOT if he wants to make his boxing debut against Sergio Martinez or Mayorga. Sergio Martinez would put on a boxing clinic. He is probably in the top 3 fighters on the entire planet pound for pound in my estimation. He decimated Paul Williams in remarkable fashion and even went up in weight and beat Kelly Pavlik.

I would expect Diaz's best bet out of the aforementioned opponents to be Jeff Lacy. Lacy hasn't been the same fighter in years and has been duking it out with palookas on Friday Night Fights and losing. Lacy had a very credible reign in the early 2000s, but he is a shell of his former self, and obviously the safest of opponents for Diaz to fight. I wouldn't expect that fight to be much of a money draw... but maybe the purse would still be higher than what he's used to seeing in MMA.
