Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves
A 4 year 71 million dollar extension for Zach Randolph? http://twitter.com/Chris_Broussard
It makes Dray's contract look rather minuscule by comparison. Zach is definitely more efficient offensively than Dray, but the next 4 years at 29.8 for Dray, I'll take that any day over 4 years and 71 million for Zach.

No money for Mayo or Gasol?

I don't know. I don't think they're too concerned about Mayo really. Gasol is another matter. If they take the Spurs to a long series or even upset them, I guess the Grizz owner Heisley can just go deeper into the luxury tax to re-sign one or both? I'd love to swoop in and steal away Marc Gasol though if they've run out of money.

whats memphis cap situation? although nowadays i question if gasol can play uptempo> there are two unsigned players there in oj and gasol who are possible fits. zebo is a good player> bad rep and questionable defense but he can outperform duncan. There big man rotation is better. This is the year they suffer for having blair in there.

They've got $37 million in salary next year, and one would assume with Zach's new contract, that will go up to around $54 million.

So basically, Randolph's contract looks something like this:
$16,500,000
$17,319,000
$18,138,000
$18,957,000
It's a terrible move by Memphis. It's hard to come up with any under-the-cap team who would be willing to throw that much coin at Randolph. I suppose Indy might think about it, but with the emergence of Hansbrough, probably not.
Memphis should have held out for a 4-year contract that paid him around $48-60M. $12-15M a year is enough for Randolph.

^ Not to mention that they don't know what the new cap will be. This could hurt their chances to retain Gasol. I hope the Wiz step in with an aggressive offer as soon as they are able to.

Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves
I swear I often just don't get NBA front office decision making. $71 million for Zach Randolph? Now?! After you've already given heaping piles of money to Rudy Gay and Mike Conley? Really?
Portland's deal with Roy was another head-scratcher. ~$82 million committed to a guy with a bone-on-bone knee.
That's before you get to Milwaukee's deal with Gooden. Or Detroit giving phat dollars to Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva and Richard Hamilton.

I'm not forgetting that one. Unbelievable. I need to stop listing these deals -- if I try to list every bad contract decision (not RESULT, but shoulda known better DECISION) I could be at this all frigging day.

The other comments about contracts and this one are on point, Nivek. Mind boggling wastes of money for the most part.
I've been thinking about Rudy Gay. I find it very ironic the Grizzlies traded Battier to Houston for Gay and subsequently rebuilt. They went through lean years and didn't win a thing, but with the old teams under Hubie Brown, featuring Battier and Pau Gasol they at least made the playoffs. Thinking of Gay, I find it ironic they don't get that first playoff win until Battier is again a Grizzly.
That team seems better without Rudy. Tony Allen, Sam Young, Shane Battier, OJ Mayo--they're getting it done and so is Randolph as a go-to player.
I wonder if Gay is a guy a team like the Wizards could trade for? Is he worth consideration?

Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves
Yep it's stunning to see executives make terrible decision after terrible decision. The Memphis scenario is a little different however. Michael Heisley often steps in and makes decisions that his front office disagrees with but what can they do? I remember sitting behind the Memphis braintrust at the VSL during Hasheem Thabeet's initial foray into the NBA and they seemed to be lamenting how in hell Thabeet was in Memphis uniform just weeks after the draft. Watching Thabeet looking like a scared 9th grader at his first day of high school and seeing the constant head shaking and sighs of their execs it was obvious to see that they never wanted anything to do with the kid.
I wonder how often ownership really steps in and meddles with the decision making process. That could explain some of these mindbogglingly bad moves

Rudy Gay is a really good player. He's got ALL THE TOOLS to be an all-star in the league. Still only 24. If Memphis wanted to trade Gay, I'd do the deal in a heartbeat. Honestly, we would not be able to get a better player than Gay in FA realistically.
Gay was playing great before he got injured. His time at the world championships helped him mature.

Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves
Rudy Gay trade ideas are being discussed in the trade thread--so, I do have my answer to above.
Just what is the right trade proposal. mhd, I think you're right that we won't get a more talented FA. I wonder if Memphis would like a guy like Terrence Jones on a rookie deal in exchange for Rudy? Seems to me that might work well for both teams.

Rudy went to high school with my brother. He had all the tools then too. Still had all the tools in college. And his first few years in the pros.
There is no reason to think he's going to become a player worthy of his contract now if he never did before.

Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves
Gotta wonder what Houston expected out of Rick Adelman. I think he did an amazing job with that team in his 4(?) years there. In his mid 60's now, he probably wouldn't be an ideal fit here, but he should be a head coach in the NBA.

Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves
It's possible that Houston recognizes the need to blow things up and rebuild from the ground up - in which case Adelman might be too good of a coach for proper tanking. ^_^

Really. He came to Houston to coach a team built around two perennial all-stars who battled injuries the entire time. He built tough teams with no-name players and coached one of the longest winning streaks in NBA history without a healthy star on the roster. He'd be a good choice for a struggling veteran team trying to get more from its players. Atlanta maybe?

Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves
Assuming the Spurs get eliminated by the Grizzlies, do they tear it all down to do a rebuild. I think they could get some decent prospects/picks for Ginobili and Parker. I am pretty sure Duncan will retire if next season is wiped out. He might be an interesting trade piece at the deadline if there is a season. He definitely is not the dominant player he once was, however he still is tall and skilled.
Unlike some of the other "old teams", the Spurs have a decent number of building blocks for a rebuild. They don't have the next Tim Duncan on their roster, but Blair, Splitter and George Hill could be decent starters. Gary Neal and James Anderson seem like they could be rotation players. Also they would be in a position they could tank enough to have a shot at drafting a franchise player.

Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves
Blair is playing less and less for the Spurs. I wonder why a 22-yr old with his background of success does that on a team that's getting hammered up front in the playoffs. Yes, he's small compared to Gasol and Randolph, but I believe he's a better option than McDyess at this point. (I also think DeJuan's lost too much weight, perhaps). I have been thinking maybe the Spurs would trade Blair.
The utter disappointment for them has to be Splitter. He's not able to help them against Memphis. Why not him or Blair?
