Mock Drafts Analyzed

Post#1 » by Dalbi » Thu Mar 3, 2011 2:35 am

This time period is huge for mock drafts so I thought I would create a topic that lists mocks and we as 49ers fans can comment whether we would like to have that group of players. If you find good mocks, post them to this topic. Try to avoid ones only with one round because that is what is being talked about in the how do we draft forum.

The first mock is realgm's very own. Here is the link for the 2011 NFL Mock Draft, Version 8 (Post-Combine)

http://football.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ ... st_combine)

They have the 49ers taking
1. Patrick Peterson (CB)
2. Dontay Moch (LB)
3. Kendall Hunter (RB)
4. Ricky Stanzi (QB) and Sione Fua (DT)

I would not be ecstatic about these selections. I love landing Patrick Peterson. He has the speed of a corner and the size of a safety which should mean a great career. However then the picks become questionable for me. Dontay Moch could go this high because he is ridiculously fast for his position. Yet he does not have the tools to be a complete outside linebacker and instead someone who is more of a specialist pass rusher. Therefore I think 2nd round is too high for him. I do not think we need a running back in the third round. Ricky Stanzi has questionable arm strength and threw terribly at the combine. In my opinion I think we can land better projects at quarterback. I like the Sione Fua pick though.

Yeah, I saw that and didn't get it either.

The Round 2 and 3 selections don't really fill needs, would make much more sense to fill the positions they have in round 4 up to the previous 2 rounds. I'm not saying they couldn't draft guys in those positions, but if they did this it would be the 3rd year in a row they'd draft a RB with a 3rd round pick if I'm not mistaken (Coffee, Dixon and then Hunter if it were to happen)

The 3 biggest need areas seem to be QB, D-Line and Secondary in my mind, other positions could use a boost, but these are where they need the most help.

Don't see them spending 2 of their top 3 picks on other areas unless they sign a veteran to fill the spot.

I think I would replace d-line with pass rusher. We do need d line but we can get a great pass rushing outside lb too. I really dislike rb that early. We might need one later but Id rather pick up a back up in fa if there is one. Also, that mock has curtis brown from texas right behind him. I actually think that would be a better pick up. Hes got some potential to be a quality corner. We could get 2 quality corners in this draft. I dont mind Stanzi in the 4th because that is low but I really want one of the other QB's. I really like Andy Dalton but I think the 2nd is too high. I would trade our 2nd and move down and get Dalton late in the 2nd.

A lot of analysts hate Dalton or at least think he would be a terrible day 2 selection. I know at the senior bowl he missed a wide open receiver who was deep. He also ran a spread offense and although it is possible to make the transition, I am scared with how Smith worked out. Many think he is not capable of throwing farther and just short passes. That is what our system is mostly going to be but we need a quarterback to at least be able to make those throws to prevent defenses from only focusing on the short game. I am not buying into this hate completely but I do agree that the second round is too high for him.

I agree that I would replace d-line with pass rusher. We do not have a great d-line, but the main importance of d-line is to occupy blockers and stop the run. We are effective at run defense and not awful at allowing the linebackers to make plays. We should address d-line but I am more focused on linebackers especially since Lawson is a free agent.

I like the decision of taking Curtis Brown. I would even also look at a player like Buster Skrine in the fifth round who is very fast and fluid and could be effective with good coaching. I would not be opposed to even three cornerbacks because they usually make great special teams players as they have speed and know how to tackle.

As for running backs, I agree we don't need to focus on running backs. We should look for a speedy running back in the sixth round or later who could complement Gore and Dixon. Gore as main guy, Dixon as bruiser, and new guy as the speed back would be a good combination.

I heard a draft analyst (forgot who) say that Patrick Peterson projected out as a safety long term and that he may drop on draft day because of that. Given what you say above what do you think about this?

People might be saying that because of his size. He is fast enough to play corner and has the movement ability to play corner coverage. That is actually the reason why he is so high on most draft boards.

It was because of his size like Sandlot says. He was really fast though and had good movement at the combine so most analysts saw that as eliminating any fears of him not being able to play corner. Either way if he falls to number 7 we should grab him. Most likely he will make a good corner. If he has to make the transition to safety at some point then we get a good safety. But again he has all the tools to be a corner. A safety size and corner speed only means a better prospect.

Which analysts? I've only got info from ESPN and NFL Network but they all love him. They keep talking about how underrated he is and a lot of them had Dalton in their top 5. Not saying there aren't analysts who don't like him I just haven't heard that.

The analysts at Draft Day countdown really dislike him. Also I saw a lot of criticism after the senior bowl. A couple other people have had negative comments but I don't remember who.

I really don't have a lot of issues in the draft of going BPA. If we can pick up projects in the 3rd round and below in need areas, I would still consider the draft a success even if we don't do that in the 1st or 2nd rounds.

1st) Peterson would be a steal at 7, top 3 player in the draft, enough said
2nd) Crazy fast with a frame that could become a DE if he wanted too (or a crazy fast cover WOLB). No issues here.
3rd1)If we get stanzi that low I would be ecstatic. The kid has done nothing but win.
3rd2)Meh, only one I'm not hot one. Would prefer if we addressed more pressing concerns.
LaMarcus for Heisman!!!

Roster:Lillard/Mathews/Batum*/LA/Lopez

Peterson is an incredible player and I feel like some team will realize it and pick him before us. But again I would love us grabbing Patrick Peterson.

Dontay Moch is crazy fast but that is why he is going high and I think we are basing too much on his speed. I obviously have not watched that much tape on the guy but from what I have heard is his play is not second round material.

New version of Jeff's mock.

Round 1 - Peterson
Round 2 - Locker

I know he talks to a lot of scouts and gms and I would love him to be right. I think this would be a dream scenario. Peterson is maybe the best player in the draft but it seems that not a lot of people think teams will take him that high. Locker is a great 2nd round risk in my opinion. We could make huge upgrades to offense and defense with these picks.

Round 1 - Peterson
Round 2 - Christian Ballard DL Iowa

I don't know a lot about Ballard. I'm assuming hes a pass rush guy. I remember his name from the combine but nothing pops to memory. We miss Ponder and Dalton by a few picks in the 2nd. Wouldn't mind trading up to snag one of them instead.

I would consider it a perfect draft if we got Peterson and Kaepernick (who the Niners seem to really like).

Yeah this is pretty much a dream come true for the Niners IMO. Both guys are great value picks at positions of need.

Actually heard some analysis about Locker that makes me slightly willing to get him. Locker is very accurate when throwing on the run but not good when in the pocket. I believe it was Mel Kiper who said this showed that Locker can make accurate throws in the pocket then if he takes some time to learn how to. Harbaugh is a great coach to help anyone since he was a quarterback and has success coaching them. Obviously it would require us to trade back into the first round but I would not be disappointed if he fell to us in the second round and we picked him up.

Locker is a choke artist. Sure he is decent out of the pocket but how often are you going to have him bootleg? If Mallet is available, draft him, or wait on stanzi in the 3rd.
